“The town’s the town,” he tells you, glaring. “Crestwood ain’t nothin’ but a road stop to most folks, but it’s still gonna be here long after you assholes blow on through. Whatever it is you think you’re gonna do here won’t make a lick of difference in the long run.”

"Yeah, about that whole folks blowing through bit. That's what I'm curious about." Kaisa doesn't seem bothered by the glaring, taking a step towards Cutter, the pleasant smile still on her face. "You see folks coming and going a lot, right? I just wanted to know if you've seen anyone real suspicious-like coming on through. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, right? Sketchy folks, the kind that would make trouble. The opposite of the fine folks of Crestwood, I'm sure."

It sounds pleasant, and maybe a different person would be able to make it sound like a genuine compliment, but the lopsided smirk dancing across her face doesn't even seem interested in selling it.

"You stupid or somethin'? I just told you I can't say nothing, didn't I?" He works his jaw back and forth and looks around, arms still crossed over his chest. "I shouldn't oughta even be seen talkin' to you."

"And yet, here we are, talking." Kaisa's voice rises, as she lifts her chin up, staring down at Cutter. "Why shouldn't you be talkin' to me, huh? Is this the whole 'Don't talk t' strangers' thing, 'cause if that's what it is, I can fetch your momma to come stand right here with us and we'll all have a nice chat about why in the Maker's name you're acting so damned sketchy."

“That supposed to be funny?” he asks, with a deadpan glare on his face. “Ha, ha. Maybe I oughta tell a few jokes a’ my own.” He uncrosses his arms and advances on you, getting up in your face — his short stature doesn’t seem to make him think twice. “I done told you once,” he says, voice low. “Don’t make me tell you again. Get.”

"That was hilarious." Kaisa responds sullenly, and you can be sure that she'll probably retell it somewhere that people appreciate her humor. In the meantime, she keeps a steady stare, looking right down her nose at the man. She's pretty sure she could take him, but--they're not here to have a wrestling match with the locals.

"I told you, real simple-like, just a moment ago. I'm well and happy to get, I just need t' know about any mysterious folks wandering around, and I'll be outta here botherin' them, and you'll be free of me for good."

“That’s right,” he says, nodding once and turning half away from you. “And you keep your nose outta where it don’t belong.”

He stands there and watches you go, only going back inside once you’re gone.

You’re done with Cutter! You didn’t get any information out of him, but that’s okay. He was never going to tell you anything no matter what you said. There is, however, pretty clearly something he knows and just didn’t tell you, which means there’s something to know.
