"Whatever the plan and evidence winds up being, there might be something happening tomorrow."

He sounds mostly disinterested as he looks over the maps; it's the safest way to sound. He's surrounded by humans and mages and human mages, for the most part, and Kif is hoping to get out of this without being eaten by a demon.

"I was told something about them wanting us out of town by then. Not that I think we're listening." Humans are contrary. There's no way they're leaving.

"Seems a possibility," Raylan agreed, sounding supremely unworried. "More likely it's just an empty threat, tryin' to get us to quit lookin'. Who'd you talk to, again?" he asked, looking up, but as he asked it, he remembered. "Bo Cropper. He's as like to be bluster as anything." He'd grown up hearing Bo's hollering and threats at Boyd, he knew the man.

"Still oughta keep our guard up, though," Raylan added. "We'll go in twos and threes to search tomorrow, no one on their own."

"I know bluster." He's a little amused as he says it. "I work for a Chevalier who spends nearly all of his time blustering." A beat. "The rest of the time he's sleeping. So yes, he was likely threatening for the sake of trying to seem big and tough, but I figured it was better to relay the words than not."

Not relaying warnings always backfires, though, to be honest, relaying them never seems to matter either. Zapp's always ignored what Kif has to say.

"What sort of evidence are we looking for?" Christine asks, looking up at Raylan and Kif. "Tracks?" She's far from a tracker, but perhaps she can stick with someone who is.

"Not so much tracks," Raylan said. "We're looking at the places of people we think are guilty. We want maps, books, letters between them, that kind of thing. Anything we can show to the mayor to prove their guilt. Anything else that seems outta place, get a second opinion."

"This is where you grew up?" There's been enough said that Kif knows the answer to his question, or is pretty certain he does, but one never wants a mage to feel nervous or like they're being watched except when Templars are doing the watching.

"Have you seen anything out of place yet?"

Raylan sat up to think about that, squinting. "Well, I ain't been much of anywhere I expect we'll find the relevant stuff, 'cept my father's house. I wasn't really looking for it." He thought about it for another moment anyway, tilting his head. "I mighta seen somethin'. Seemed to me like they had some stuff that's too nice for them to afford legitimately. Keep in mind, folks around here are pretty much livin' on the edge of subsistence."

"I understand. I'm a city elf." He might be dressed nicely now, but that's due to accident. His family had struggled for a long time until he'd saved Zapp's life.

"Money comes from something. Either they lucked into a mine," unlikely, "or they're trading in new goods, because there isn't a fancy inn or brothel to bring in a lot of income in other ways."

Goods or services. That's what it came down to. If you had one or the other you could make it, and Kif's parents had made sure he'd understood that.
