He wasn't behind her because of those reasons. Basic exploration technique
was not to walk to abreast. Two people got stuck in a trap instead of just
one plenty of times because of that, not to mention there was always the
chance something could come racing up from behind. He glanced behind them
just for that reason, watching the faint arch of the doorway as if he did
indeed expect it to disappear at any moment. But if they were going to
trigger that sort of trap they would have done so already.
"Just because I'm upset with you doesn't mean I'm going to let you wander
around in the dark on your own," he said, concentrating on their path
forward now. "We came here as a team, and that means no one goes off on
their own."
Nostrils flared as he caught the scent of burning wood, hairs rising on the
back of his neck. He couldn't see smoke and his breathing wasn't impaired
so it didn't seem like an immediate threat, but it certainly brought back
Ellana's statement from before.
"Let's just hope we're the only ones down here," he muttered as they came
to the room, looking beyond into the dark and his gut twisting. He really
wishes they had flares to throw into it ahead of them. Looking to his
partner and the light she cast, he thought maybe they might.
"Can you send a light ahead of us?" He inquired, motioning to the space
beyond the arches.
