WHAT: Tracking down the Sulevin Blade
WHEN: January 13th/Wintermarch 13th
WHERE: the Dales
NOTES: OOC Post
[ OOC: The plot starts with the first phase below in the comments section. Everybody tag into that one. There doesn't need to be a tag order; just hop in whenever. If we go maybe two full days with no tags, I'll try to hustle things along unless I was the last tagger, of course. When we reach a point that looks good to start the next phase, I'll post it as a new comment and close the previous thread. I'm pretty sure you can go ahead a track the whole entry without a paid account, and this way it'll be less confusing if we stick to one section at a time.
At certain points, I'll leave an ooc note asking for you to roll a d20 or to make some sort of choice so I can tailor the thread to your character. If anything's confusing or you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me via PM or a private plurk to

He wasn't behind her because of those reasons. Basic exploration technique was not to walk to abreast. Two people got stuck in a trap instead of just one plenty of times because of that, not to mention there was always the chance something could come racing up from behind. He glanced behind them just for that reason, watching the faint arch of the doorway as if he did indeed expect it to disappear at any moment. But if they were going to trigger that sort of trap they would have done so already.
"Just because I'm upset with you doesn't mean I'm going to let you wander around in the dark on your own," he said, concentrating on their path forward now. "We came here as a team, and that means no one goes off on their own."
Nostrils flared as he caught the scent of burning wood, hairs rising on the back of his neck. He couldn't see smoke and his breathing wasn't impaired so it didn't seem like an immediate threat, but it certainly brought back Ellana's statement from before.
"Let's just hope we're the only ones down here," he muttered as they came to the room, looking beyond into the dark and his gut twisting. He really wishes they had flares to throw into it ahead of them. Looking to his partner and the light she cast, he thought maybe they might.
"Can you send a light ahead of us?" He inquired, motioning to the space beyond the arches.

Galadriel arched a brow as she considered it--in truth, she wasnt certain if she could. She had never attempted to maintain a light apart from herself in Thedas, but it was worth attempting.
The light in her fingers increased in intensity for a moment. It solidified after a beat, becoming at once more tangible but somewhat dimmer. She paused her step as she peered at the darkness ahead of them and, without further preamble, cast the sphere of light ahead of them.

Jim won't be left out in the cold, however. The light she created moves on, and he'll be able to see a doused campfire, the light shining off the water on the floor around it.

"Looks like Ellana was right. Someone was here, and might still be," he pitched his voice quiet and low to Galadriel, rising up and shifting his staff into a more ready position.

"Be wary, the last ruins I walked had hideous traps and nightmarish beasts," Galadriel replied quietly and shifted her glaive in front of her. The room was dimmer as her light faded out, but not pitch dark so long as she occupied it. It wasn't much, but it was enough to see by.

Ellana smiles in greeting. "Good timing. Has anyone found anything interesting?"
[ ooc: Everybody pile in here now! We're back to one main thread. ]

That feels important, if only because they weren't the ones who killed them. Still, she nods at Korrin's words, patting at the spot on her belt where it's hidden -- if Ellana wants to see, she'll pull it out, but right now she's too wary of the ruins themselves to do so.
"I felt a pull toward the box it was in- whoever's in here, I don't think it's one of the People. Otherwise I think they'd have found it."

"No, no blade on our end."

But what did he know about places like this? Giant dead spiders, most likely killed by the person who doused the nearby fire. Damn, this was getting creepier by the moment.
"All we have is this fire," Kirk motioned. "It's recent too." He looked to Ellana. "Your suspicion that someone else was here is more than likely correct, but I can't say if they're here now or coming back. Either way, it's something else we need to look out for if we keep going further in."

The path ahead is still dark, but the weak lights they possess are enough to guide them forward. The walls ahead are deteriorated from above, punctured and laced with wide tree-roots and moss covered stone. Deep mushrooms glitter a faint blue through the heavy ivy and rubble. To one side of the great, old wooden doors an old, threadbare tapestry rots away on a bent, gilded crossbar.
It was a tragedy that this place was in such disrepair and Galadriel lamented it, if only briefly, as she moved toward the doors and her light reformed in her fingers.
"Keep a watchful eye for those who set that fire, it would not do for us to be caught unaware in deep, dark places," Galadriel warned as she reached forward and pressed open doors.

Galadriel will soon see how ironic her words were, because as soon as she pushes open the doors, a trip line breaks behind it and everything explodes into chaos. And flames. The area around the doors explodes outwards. It seems someone has hidden materials back behind the tapestry and large roots similar to what the dwarves use to clear tunnels. Not only that, but oil too, and something that ignites it. The ceiling shakes as chunks of rock start falling down, blocking them from the way they came on all sides. Merrill and Jim especially are effected by the trap. Whether thrown back, hit from falling stone above, or caught up in the fire, they suffer a bit more than the rest of the party does.
For her part, Ellana helpfully screams, throwing an arm over her head as the walls shake and the ceiling starts to come down. But the open doors show a set of stairs leading down to another door. It seems to be their only escape from the fire and cave in they're experiencing.
"Hurry! Down the stairs!" Who can say what this other door holds in store for them, but it's better than staying here where the only result is certain death.
[ ooc: I'm sorry, Merrill and Jim! It's because you rolled the lowest numbers. I left it vague so you can play around with the severity of their injuries. ]

He should have known. He should have known that there would be traps, or something to keep intruders out if someone else was already here. He should have - and he didn't. Not that he had much time to be angry about it, being thrown back as he was, slamming into some fixture and toppling forward. Just getting his body to remember to breathe was more than enough to occupy him, getting himself to try and move as rocks tumbled down. His ears rang and his body felt numb, vision blurred, half red and half not.
A scream, maybe? He wasn't sure, looking like a newborn calf as he struggled to find his equilibrium and get back to his feet. He tasted salt and iron in his mouth now, or maybe copper. It was metal, whatever it was, and god every breath hurt. It wasn't helped by his coughing.
He'd managed to get to his hands and knees when Ellana screamed, but anything beyond that was to much, giving out as he lost his balance and struggled to make sense of the scene.

He's quick to get to his feet though, eyes darting about to take in what had happened, registering that someone was yelling to get down the stairs. Jim immediately catches his attention, seeing the man unable to get up from his hands and knees. "Jim," he calls out, though it comes out as a rasp that probably couldn't be heard, before hurrying over to help him get to his feet.
There isn't time for him to see to any injuries, not with rocks coming down on them, but he does at least send out a quick group healing spell that should help with some pain and some minor injuries.

Merrill screams when Ellana does, but hers continues. She's in the middle of the fire, and while some of Korrin's barrier still clings to her, it's not enough for her not to feel it. Winter's Grasp bursts from her hands, unsteady; it takes out some of the flames but not all of them, crawling up the wall instead of going forward. The chain mail in her robes is hot, metal burning against her skin in addition to the burns from the fire itself, but there's nothing she can do about it for the moment but grimace as she tries to hurry past the remainder of the flames and the crumbling ceiling.
Even now, one hand goes to doublecheck the hilt on her belt. Still there. Not harmed, as far as she can tell, and Merrill nods to herself. Okay. She can do this.
Everything just needs to hurt less for a moment. Sam's healing spell helps, some of the burns on her legs patching up enough that she can move a little faster, smoking staff used as support.

As Sam's healing spell takes effect, Korrin's able to focus past the pain and casts Winter's Grasp as well to put out more of the flames between her and Merrill. She even tries to aim it just so, in hopes that Merrill's armor can cool off a little, but not to undo Sam's healing.. When she's close enough, Korrin reaches out. "Take my hand!" She quickly casts Fade Step, speeding them toward the stairs and away from this chaos.
