WHEN: Throughout Drakonis

A. It's a new dog!
He'd been wanting one since first seeing the mabari. Now he had one of his own. A fine pup who tended to spend much of his time tripping over his own feet but was ever eager to be with and please the large man. Really he'd been told that an older dog would be recommended but they'd laid eyes on each other and that had been that. After all, once that bond was formed there simply was no going back.
And so one could find him with a puppy in one of the more open areas. They were training and it seemed that the puppy was at least rather intelligent at picking up on things! So long as Iskandar used his native tongue for the commands, something he'd decided to do just to solidify their bond further.
"Heh. What a clever boy you are, my Achilles Alexander!" The pup gave a bark and then happily ate up the piece of meat that he was given. And yes, Iskandar sure had named this dog after himself.
B. Training is important
The best way to perfect how one used their adjusted powers was to, well, use them. So he was around the training grounds to work with the couple of them that he felt could safely be done here. Name the teleportation and invisibility ones. So it was easy enough to spot him standing in one location only to reappear in another. At times he frowned and rubbed his beard as he considered what he'd been doing before trying again.
One could feel free to interrupt him though. He wasn't needing the concentration to do this really.
C. Memories rise to the surface
There were times when even Iskandar needed a moment to reflect, to think on the sadder days. Though he never regretted any of them that hardly meant they didn't weight on his heart. Many had been lost under his command or had given up much to follow him. Then there were times when he remembered Hephaestion and how perhaps he would never see him again. Or that his son would be someone he'd never lay eyes on.
So he was in the gardens with a kitten and a mabari pup curled up together on his lap. Both were sound asleep as if they'd been playing hard until that moment. He smiled down at them fondly, stroked their soft ears as he admired their pure innocence.
"It has been long since I had your purity, little ones."

Iskandar looked over at him and lifted a brow. Really at this point he'd settled for just thinking this man an idiot. Even if he happened to have a vastly intelligent mind he was still an idiot for thinking that communication could be such a waste. Especially when it was such a key to sharing knowledge. "It seems more like you wish to paint a terrible image of your self because it would be easier. Which again makes me wonder why you bother to save anyone at all. It matters not if you want the recognition but to show such a side is not a sign of compassion in my eyes. It would work even less in this world where they so obviously would find such jumps and such to be insulting. After all, you are no better than any of us here so we should all have equal opportunity to understand."

He looked down at the puppy and the kitten. And sighed again.
"Jamie thinks more highly of me than he should. Most people do. And I save others because it's what my life has become. After billions of years, I know no other way."
He leaves it at that. Because if he were to start recounting all the losses, they'd be here for years.
"And because every time I think, 'Why do I bother', someone says something or does something that makes me think, 'I can't imagine this universe without them in it.'"
no subject
He waved his hand like he was presenting the very garden when he was actually presenting the world.
"We are both here now with no clue when we leave. Why not get to know the people? The cultures? They could need you but they are not so likely to listen to you if you do not gain their respect first."
no subject
To be fair, it was a bit more complex than that, but the results would have been the same. Drove
Riverhis wife nuts when she couldn't do research on him any more."Simple answer? Because in the end, they all leave. Because they should. Or they find someone else. Or they die.
So many of them die.And some of them forget me. Or something happens to me and I forget them, or I have to leave... I suppose, it's because, after all the saving is done, they still manage break my hearts."Knowing people in the manner that Iskander suggests is a double-edged sword and at this point in his life, the Doctor can't suffer any additional heartbreak.

But this was Iskandar.
"Billions of years you have lived but you have but the mind of a boy. A pity." He gave pause then looked at the man. "I do not mind that you find me to be wrong or that you do not agree. Many have felt this way and many have argued with me in the past. Even my own men. However, I find your methods of handling matters to be that of a child wishing good and only stumbling about. Others may admire this but I do not. I know another like you as well. I never imagined I would find another with power that I would view as but a child."
no subject
"What's the point in growing up if you can't be childish sometimes?" He shook his head, that was said under his breath, as was the next bit. "Long scarf, moved past that." Louder he said, "I've been called far worse for far lesser reasons."
He considered himself to be far worse, so in the end, it didn't matter that Iskander told him this much. Though, he would argue that he's not a child. Teenager. Rebellious and stubborn. Sophomoric. Idiot. He knows he's all those things. But this is the only environment where it hasn't worked for him so expecting him to change much this early would be just as foolish.
"So, that's it then? Just going to give up on even working together?"
Because, that's what it sounded like.
no subject
Iskandar lifted a brow his way. He'd said what his exact thoughts were and that was the end of it. Not once had he ever suggested them not working together.
"It seems you rush to conclusions again."
no subject
"If it were a conclusion, it would have been phrased a statement, I asked a question."
But the reply sounds more amused than anything. He takes a breath and nods, because that was beside the point. Just a moment of amusement before growing serious again.
"I didn't suggest it either. I was asking for your thoughts, since I've done most of the talking."
And he's not used to talk about himself. At all. Ever. 'Talks all the time, but doesn't say anything' - more than one friend had said that about him.
no subject
Which was not exactly painting the Doctor out of his 'this is an idiot' light that Iskandar had put upon him. Really he was just less than impressed with him as a whole.
"Your question implied you were giving up since it seemed you thought I was. If you had wished for my thoughts on the matter then simply say so. There is no need to dance with words in a conversation where I have encouraged openness and given such with my own thoughts."
As for the answer... "My opinions on how you handle matters does not suggest I would not work with you. To do so would be foolish. Allies are necessary, even those we do not agree with. The only conclusion I can give to you is that I would not invite you to join my kingdom for I feel that you think too small no matter how open your gaze is."
no subject
"You interpreted my question as such. As you said, people will decide what they see."
It doesn't mean that they are making sound decisions. And the Doctor chuckles softly at the last bit.
"I'm president of Earth in my universe...."
Not that he likes it. But he doesn't need to join any more kingdom than jhaving the entire planet, thanks. Besides, he hates being under anyone else's control. And boy did people want to control him as president.
"In the meantime, though. We're both here and agree we're allies."
So nothing else matters.
no subject
He lifted a brow at that, looking highly unimpressed.
"You may hold this title but I do not acknowledge you as any sort of leader over any land or world. I do agree to fight with you as it is necessary but I also find you to be a largely unintelligent individual no matter the vast knowledge you might possess. Do as you will however, I will hold this opinion as long as you treat people as you do."
He was not going to budge on that either no matter what was said at this point. The man had proven to him that he was an uncaring individual no matter what care he took in making sure the worlds he went to were saved. Martyrs were never to be admired in his eyes. They might do some good but in the long run their solitary struggles only caused more pain.
And that was all the Doctor was in his eyes. A martyr.
no subject
But then the Doctor looks at Iskander as the man continues to speak.
"You fall utterly short of your stories. Can't say I'm surprised."
Sad, but not surprised. He's used to such at this point in his life. He stands and shoves his hands in his pockets. He knows more than he ever wanted to. He honestly knows better than to expect meeting such icons to go well.
"Good-bye, then."
Iskander had made it clear the conversation was over. And the Doctor has never been one to stay where he wasn't wanted.
