Thankfully he was bequeathed quite a bit of leather to run these experiments, because there was a lot he wanted to test. He didn't want to run each subsequent test on a previously used leather either - that would skew results, and he needed these as precise and clean and controlled as possible. Not the lab settings he would hope for, but make due with what you got.

Now all he needed were his assistants.

The fact that he could surprise James with such little shows of affection was half the reason he did them, the rest of it being that he could, not shy in showing at least that much. It amused him somewhat, at how Jim could have no shame in things that he said often in public, but when it came to showing it he was more reserved.

Placing the extra leather down, Sam looked to where the rest were already strapped up and waiting. "Want to start off with magic, or regular attacks?"

He knew that Sam enjoyed them - funny how he could sense such little things like that now. But it was all fine, as he liked when Sam enjoyed things.

"Which will tax you more?" Kirk asked. "The magic?" he tapped his quill against his little table. "Honestly I think we should spread this out over two days. One day for magic and one day for the sword. I don't want the results overly compromised if you're drained from one or the other."

"Does that mean you'll be keeping your hands to yourself tonight?" There's a smirk on Sam's face as he leans back on the table, brow quirked up as he looks at Kirk with amused curiosity. After he didn't want 'the results to be overly compromised' and he would need his rest between using magic and his sword.

But on a serious note-

"Honestly the physical stuff will more then likely be more taxing, unless you're asking me to do some crazy things with magic. I'm also glad I decided to bring a regular sword along with - the one I normally use IS magic."

"That depends. I had thought about giving you a massage for your efforts, but if you prefer not to be touched..." he trailed off and shrugged his shoulders, letting Sam's mind complete the thought as it would.

He took in Sam's words and nodded, letting the usual teasing slide in the face of getting the job done. He turned to the leathers and considered them for a moment before he nodded to himself.

"All right, let's work with your sword first, take a break, and then your magic if you're up to it. If not, we can come back again tomorrow. Don't needlessly push yourself, all right?'

The promise of a massage certainly gets Sam's attention, brows raising just slightly. Course he understood the underlying sexual intent of it as well. As much as he would love to just to follow this train of thought, there was an honest serious assignment here.

They would get back to that matter. Perhaps later.

Sword then magic. He nods in agreement to the plan, getting up from the table and heading to the first target with his sword. "So how would you like it? Do some slashes and thrusts?"

"Just a downward slash will do," he nodded. "Once we go through that, I might have you try some downward piercing motions." He held his hands like he had the hilt and thrust it down to show what he meant. His lips twisted into a naughty smirk.

"Please try to work up a sweat."

"Are you going to tell me 'Harder', 'Put your back into it', or even tell me to take my shirt off?" Even as he asks, Sam moves closer to the samples. Keeping his eye on Kirk for a bit longer he eventually turns his attention to the first rack, taking the sword up in both hands, and slashing at the leather.
