Thankfully he was bequeathed quite a bit of leather to run these experiments, because there was a lot he wanted to test. He didn't want to run each subsequent test on a previously used leather either - that would skew results, and he needed these as precise and clean and controlled as possible. Not the lab settings he would hope for, but make due with what you got.

Now all he needed were his assistants.

Kain glances at the set up approvingly and nods. Good, all of that is helpful. He's not about to admit that he may be in need of a break, sooner than normal even. He's just glad to be back on his feet with a sword in hand. He stands back a bit, taking a couple of warm up swings.

"The leather appears to be of pretty good quality at a glance. Let's see what it's really made of."

With that, he comes in toward it with a heavy strike of his sword. After the initial blow, he comes in for more, repeating the same motion, keeping it evenly balanced. So far, so good...

Kirk paused him at the first blow to take a few measurements, noting them down on his paper, and then motioning for Kain to continue. He measured the number of strikes before the leather was considered to have failed - which given that it was leather rather than metal wasn't overly long.

"We're doing good, Kain, just remember to keep the blows even," Kirk encouraged the warrior as he made another note.

“Good, I’m glad to hear it. I’ll be interested to know what turns out to be the best kind.” He himself prefers metal for armor, but it’s always worth knowing what holds up best for other purposes, even. Leather is used in many things, after all.

It’s definitely a good workout so far, and he feels himself getting back into a good rhythm with his swings. He’ll follow Kirk’s lead, stopping when he needs to check on the leather and measure things, then he goes right back at it, swinging repeatedly and steadily. After a time, he’s starting to feel the exertion a little, but he figures he’ll keep himself going… just a bit more.

Kirk takes his measurements as Kain strikes, scratching on his little board. He would motion for Kain to make the next strikes as he finished his noting, and after a bit he noticed Kain seemed to be flagging. Or at least sweating a bit much. He held up his hand for the other to stop and headed back to the table, opening a basket and pulling out a flask of chilled, thin wine (he still didn't trust the water here).

"Come on, take a break," Kirk encouraged him. "I need to organize some of this before we continue on."

By now, Kain is definitely feeling the strain from what he's doing... not that it's a bad thing, but he does still need to pace himself. He'd have probably pushed himself further if Kirk hadn't mentioned something. It's just as well. Kain takes a moment to catch his breath, panting heavily. That had gone better than expected, really.

"All right. A refreshment right now is not... a bad idea." He sets down the sword for the time being.
