[open] concerning hobbits

WHO: Samwise Gamgee and EVERYONE HE CAN FIND
WHAT: Sam's arrived at Skyhold and is exploring! Also asking questions. All the questions.
WHEN: After arriving from the Fallow Mire
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: Feel free to meet Sam in any part of Skyhold! He'll be all over.

He'd tried to stick close to who he'd already started privately thinking of as his new friends - the other Sam and the wizard Twisted Fate. He'd even glimpsed, once or twice, the Man who'd pulled him out of the Mire in the first place, and saved him from being drownded. But the road from the Fallow Mire had been long, and Sam had spent much of it on his own, tucked away in small corners of wagons or sitting astride horses alongside dwarves, being too short to walk and have a hope of keeping up.

And when they'd arrived at last, he'd found himself suddenly left completely to his own devices.

Skyhold. He rolls the word around in his mind, staring up, up at the battlements and the clouds beyond. It's a good enough name for the place, he supposes, being up in the mountains as it is. And there's something in it that appeals to him - it's not quite Elvish, not quite Rivendell or Lothlórien, but it's a bit more fanciful than Hobbiton or Bywater, he thinks. As for the place itself, he finds himself a bit overwhelmed - not only with the size (which is enormous in its own right, apart from everything in it being built proportionate to Big People), but with the ceaseless activity and the seemingly endless places to explore and get lost in.

He finds the kitchen first, hobbit-senses guiding him true, but after he's snacked his fill he finds himself wanting to explore more, and he steps carefully down the stairs into the yard. There are folk of all shapes and sizes everywhere (though nobody he recognizes), and he takes a deep breath before walking forward, not quite sure where he's going.

There are Elves here; he knows that much. If nothing else, perhaps the Elves will know more about what's happened and why he's come here. Perhaps they'll at least know Gandalf's name.

Sam is a smart chap, in more ways than one. Not calling a wizard names is obviously a good idea, and one he agrees with wholeheartedly, but using a disguise is a fantastic one - and one that hasn't even crossed his mind. It's something that gets his eyes to widen for a second or two, but the expression is quickly replaced by a broad and definitely pleased smile.

"Hey, I'd not thought of that! That could work. She's not seen me in anything other than my kilt, so if I can get some trousers, or maybe a long cloak, or..." He snaps his fingers as an idea occurs to him, then gestures towards Sam enthusiastically. "There's some armor I'd gotten for when we got sent out to that Fallow Mire place. I could use that. That's a fantastic idea, ah..."

He blinks, trailing off as he searches for Sam's name and realizes he doesn't have it. It gets him to reach up to itch at his ear, something that doesn't quite hide the now-sheepish look on his face.

"I didn't even ask your name, did I? Sorry about that. I'm Jamie."

While Jamie isn't the tallest of men, it's not hard for him to see that Sam is right - his cloak would still be far too short for this. Not that he'd planned on asking for it, of course, especially not when there's other options.

"Och, don't worry. I know exactly where to go."

At least to get what he's looking for, anyway. There's still places around here he has problems finding, but where he's keeping extra clothing isn't one of them.

"You're right, mind, but I'll be there and back before you even know I'm gone. Ah...although I should ask if you'd rather stay here and wait or come with me." That would probably be a good thing to find out, he reckons, and he tilts his head slightly, giving Sam a somewhat quizzical look. "Any preferences there, then?"

Sam's a good chap for being willing to stay, and the fact he's willing to do so is enough that Jamie reaches out out and goes to clap him appreciatively on the shoulder, so long as Sam's alright with it. If not, that's fine - not everyone is fond of those sorts of gestures as Jamie is, but he wants him to know that he appreciates the offer all the same. So he gives Sam a smile as well, a broad one meant to convey the same sort of feeling.

"Aye. That way we'll know if she decides to leave or if she's still in there. Good thinking, Sam. Look, I'll not be long at all, but if it does look like anyone's coming out, don't let them know what we're on about, alright?"

Not that he thinks Sam will, but a little extra caution never hurt matters any, and with one last quick smile he takes off at a jog, heading down the corridor to where his clothes are currently stashed. Luckily, the place he's currently keeping his clothes isn't far as well, and he should be there and back fairly quickly.

How Sam pulls off standing up even straighter, Jamie may never know - yet it happens all the same, leaving him start to wonder about it for those few seconds before the report comes in and gets him grimacing ever so faintly instead.

He's been hoping that maybe the cook would have duties elsewhere, but no such luck, it seems. And with her in a stew...well, other people might decide that the risk isn't worth it. Now that he's gone to the the point that he's gotten the disguise on, though, he's determined to have a go at it. If nothing else, Sam deserves it for being willing to stick around. So after a moment, the grimace fades away, replaced by a determined expression as he placed his hand on the door.

"Right. If it looks bad, then we'll just have to come up with a plan as we go. For right now, though, let's see if she'll take pity on a poor hungry scout and his young friend."

With that, he reached over and went to push the door open, holding it so they could step through together.
