FIRSTFALL RIFTER ARRIVAL

WHO: New rifters & their rescuers
WHAT: People fall out of a rift and get attacked by stuff, as usual.
WHEN: Firstfall/November 14
WHERE: Somewhere a ways off the Imperial Highway between Cumberland and Nevarra City
NOTES: This arrival log is open to all. Solas was able to alert the Inquisition to the general area where the new rifters would be arriving so people can pick them up. Rifters can then either continue on with the main Inquisition caravan to Nevarra City or be escorted back to Kirkwall.

You were asleep--deeply or fitfully, for the last time or just resting your eyes for a moment-- and then you were not. And wherever you were was not, anymore, replaced by nothing but the sensation of falling, tumbling into endless, bottomless nothing. If this were still a dream, you would wake before you hit the ground. You can't die in a dream, they say. In some worlds.

In this world, when the afterimage left by a flare of too-bright, greenish light fades, you will find yourself landing with a wet smack. There is no avoiding the mud: this rift has opened up in the center of some unfortunate farmer's field, and all his hard work plowing and manuring has now been ruined, first by the rain that has churned it into a thick and especially fragrant muck and then by the arrival the rift itself, splitting the air mid-field and making it impossible to safely plant. And now, of course, there's you as well, tumbling out of the Fade and into the shin-deep mud.

The cluster of demons emerging from the rift seem at odds with the setting, strange stark shapes in this empty space, standing out against the grey sky. Some are tall, spindly stick-things with too many eyes who seem like they should tumble down the hill in a tangle of limbs but instead sink into the snow to anchor themselves and use the long reach of their arms to attack. Some are hunched and hooded with no eyes at all, others mere wisps of greenish light that float over the icy ground. None look friendly or familiar. Also unfamiliar is the narrow splinter of light the same sickly green as whatever brought you here that now glows out of the palm of your left hand. It aches, a bone-deep pain that gnaws even through all the distractions.

All around is more fields, except for an abandoned farmhouse a ways off, beside a windbreak of spindly trees topping a low ridge before the next stretch of pasture. As you find your feet, you may catch sight of a handful of figures in the distance, exiting the farmhouse and hurrying away over the hill. If anyone ventures to the farmhouse, they will find the remains of a camp, and may be able to locate a dropped notebook or what looks like pieces of some unknown scientific instrument, apparently broken in the rush to leave.

Haldir perked up from his reverie at the sound. He looked toward the individual who sang, and gave a soft smile. He cocked his head to the side as he listened, chuckling at the dramatic parts.

"You sing well. Better than I. Although, I was rarely present for singing lessons. Too busy careening off into the woods."

Haldir's smile turns somber now as he looked down at his feet, remembering the warmth only the woods of Lorien could give him. His heart ached knowing he might never see it again. Never walk in the light of their stars. Never see his churlish brothers again, though he knew they wouldn't lament his absence. Their love for him never ran very deeply. He let out a sigh, and he rubbed his glowing palm again.

"Thank you," he said quietly as he looked back up.

Elros looks up and smiles, coming over. His Sindarin is very old-fashioned - a little oddly so, perhaps, as he still has a slightly Amanian Noldo accent, if Haldir can recognise one. specifically, a very distinctly Feanarian one

Thank you! I had a good teacher, although I'm sure you underestimate yourself. I don't think we've met - Elros Earendillion, at your service!

Haldir sucked in a breath, and with wide eyes looked back up at him. He clenched his jaw slightly to keep it from going slack. He shot a glance up to Galadriel’s direction, but she was well ahead of him. He bit back a nervous whimper and then looked back at him.

“My-My Lord-I didn’t know you-“ He cleared his throat and hope his eyes didn’t look as pleading as he suspected they did. “I am most honored to meet you. Forgive me for not addressing you properly.”

He gave him a short bow, hoping that he hasn’t offended him. “I knew your brother. Not-not intimately- but I met him only a handful of times. And looking at you now the resemblance is unmistakable. I’ve heard stories of you since I was small--however I can be useful to you, Lord, I hope you will but call."

He remained bent at the waist, cursing himself for rambling on but his mouth wouldn’t stop. He felt his face become hot- another new development of his body that he disliked incredibly.

his ego is just puffing up oh dear

"Whoa!"

Elros waves and pulls him up.

"There's no need for that, really. You know my brother? How go things in Lindon? But please don't do the bow and scrape thing - I'm a king of Men now, Elrond is Elu's heir!"

His face faltered, unable to hide the grief he’d been wrestling with since his arrival to this place.

“Lindon is…it is not as you remember, my Lord. It has… declined. Most of us have sailed for Valinor. The few who have stayed have accepted that they will likely not live long. The enemy is amassing power again. The race of Men is shattered-broken.” He took a breath as his chest tightened.

“There is one man-a descendent of yours- who I believe can unite them. He is reluctant, and stubborn.” He smiled a little in memory. “I watched him grow from the small sprout to the man he is. A finer man than him I have never seen.”

"Wait, wait - I've not even finished building Armenolos yet, let alone looked for a wife! What are you saying?"
hallabackdir: (Default)

Well this is awkward....

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-01 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Haldir had no idea what to say. He could recite the history of Elros' life backwards and forwards. But if he hadn't even finished building Armenolos... How could this be? He swallowed roughly, and brought his hand to worry at his brow.

"Apologies, my Lord. I- must have spoken out of turn. I lived in a time some 5,000 years after you...died."

He looked up at him, pleadingly.

this timey wimey thing is annoying and Elros doesnt like it

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-01 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Elros opens his mouth and then closes it and blinks.

"Huh. That's... suddenly, I feel really old."

He pats Haldir's arm. "Not your fault, don't apologise. It's just... not quite what I expected to hear. But hey, Maedhros has a body again when he's supposed to be dead, so clearly, things here are just plain weird."
hallabackdir: (Hip Happy)

You're going to kill him... he's having a heart attack.

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-03 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Relief spreads over him at his kind words, and he brings his other hand up slowly to touch where Elros touched his arm. He stares up at him, mouth agape for a few seconds.

"Yes," he replies still a bit dazed. "I met him not long ago. I-he-was not what I expected."
tar_minyatur: (young and bold)

lol poor Haldir

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"They're good at that." Elros says dryly. "I think Maglor, especially, likes surprising people. But they were kind to me, when they did not have to be, and they never hid their deeds from us."

He took a few second to chew on that information. The Feanorians had never been described as being overly kind. But, his interaction with Maedhros peaked his curiosity, and he knew stories rarely showed all angles of events.

"Lady Galadriel will have some....choice... words for them I expect. And as curious as I am about what will be said, I think it would be safer to keep some distance." He let out a soft chuckle.

Elros chortles at the thought.

"My dear cousin-aunt has never made any secret of her thoughts on her disreputable side of the family. I'm sure the yelling match will be suitably epic. And probably entirely silent so that no one else can hear!"

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-04 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Elros' comment worked loose another smile from him.

"On the very rare occasions we had outsiders in Lorien, they often found her particular forms of communication to be concerning. It is immensely entertaining to see their progression of confusion. I'd often try and pick out who it was she was having silent conversations with. Usually it was fairly easy to guess."

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-04 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
"She mostly spoke aloud to Elrond and I, unless we were in trouble. But I'm sure she enjoys discomfiting people that way. It seems to be a family trait."
hallabackdir: (Bae)

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-04 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
" I'm fairly sure she makes it a goal to reduce them to tears. And my Lady isn't one to retreat from a challenge."
tar_minyatur: (young and bold)

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-04 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Hah! Maglor used to claim as much. I'm glad to know it isn't just family griping speaking. She's always been good to us, of course. And it's nice not to get treated like we're going to break all 'Oooh look it's the kidnapped twins' as if we weren't properly brought up!"
hallabackdir: (Smiles)

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-04 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Haldir looked up at him, and let his eyes soften even more than they had before. Elros had an easy manner about him, that reminded him much of Estel. Which was not surprising given they were related, however distantly.

"She has never been one soften words for those she knows are strong enough to hear them. I know not if it is a result of her abilities, or just a long life of experiences. But, I appreciate it none the less."
tar_minyatur: (elros)

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-04 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't look at me, I'm one of the babies of the family." Elros shrugs with a laugh.

"All this family drama is too much to keep up with!"

A blonde eyebrow quirked up in a question. "I'm having a very hard time picturing you as an infant, but I suppose the comparison is an accurate one."

He shifted his weight from foot to foot nervously. "It does shed some light on my own family's dynamics. Maybe I should have tried harder to mend the rift between us. But, at the time I just found the whole thing inconvenient."

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-04 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Families are complicated." Elros agrees.

"But unlike me, you're immortal, with time to be able to fix things, on one side of the sea or the other, depending. Take my advice and don't put it off - it just gets harder the more you do"

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-04 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
A great sadness seeped into his eyes, and he looked down. I fear I will never be presented an opportunity. My kin have sailed on the last ships to Valinor. I chose to stay. Even if I found myself back in Arda, reconciliation is beyond my reach now.
tar_minyatur: (flat stare)

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Elros pokes him.

"None of that." He scolds.

"'Never', as the saying goes, is a very long time. And how do you know if it is the last ship or not? You're Eldar. You have time. Learn to build one! It really isn't that hard, I should know."
hallabackdir: (pic#11913076)

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-06 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Elros, first king of Numenor, had just poked him. Poked him. His brain stuttered as he tried to process that turn of events.

But he thought on what he said, realizing the wisdom in it. He was right, of course. He had nothing but time. He didn't have to remain stagnant, and if he ever did get back to Arda, he could apply himself to get back to Valinor. It gave him hope at least, that maybe his future wasn't so bleak.

"Be weary of any ship I build, my Lord. I have ever been a poor craftsman. Other than small carvings of animals and the like while on post, I was quite lacking when it came to creating anything." He chuckled and gave a half smile. "But I see your point."
tar_minyatur: (still a menace)

[personal profile] tar_minyatur 2017-12-06 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes he did.

"You could ask for lessons?" Elros suggests. "Even if all the elves have sailed, and I doubt that, Men build good ships too you know - if not so elegant!"
hallabackdir: (Default)

[personal profile] hallabackdir 2017-12-06 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
He breathed in deeply, and then let it out in one big huff.

"Possibly. But I think you severely overestimate my skill." He thought about how it would look, him coming into doc in Valinor in whatever monstrosity he would be able to create. They would likely not let him into port.
