WHO: Kain and OPEN
WHAT: Getting used to things at Skyhold, preparing for the upcoming mission
WHEN: Between returning from the Mire and leaving on the war table mission
WHERE: Training grounds, and generally around Skyhold

Training Grounds

Of course, one of the first places that Kain checks out in Skyhold is the training grounds. Anything else can wait, it's more important for him to be at his best... especially with what they're facing here. He's still getting used to everything, coming to terms with the gods' war being over for him, and with the fact that it hadn't been the end he'd expected.

So Kain can be seen practicing with his spear, slicing up targets with the well-practiced ease of a skilled warrior. Every so often he throws in something probably a lot less... expected... like a mighty Jump or a blast of Cyclone. He's intent on what he's doing, but definitely open to sparring should anyone be around.

Around Skyhold

To go along on this mission, he's got to blend in. Which means that, unfortunately, it really isn't such a great idea to wear his typical dragoon gear out there. Way too noticeable for someone posing as a hunter.

He's somehow thrown together an especially garish combination of colors and patterns for his current attempt at "blending in". There's plaidweave of course, so much plaidweave, along with ring velvet, silk, ram leather... The whole thing isn't exactly... the greatest combination of patterns and colors (but since when has Kain known how to dress aside from armor?).

He doesn't seem to notice anything amiss as he explores the area some more. There are two main places he's most likely to be run into: He's especially fond of walking high along the castle battlements and towers, where he spends a lot of time. But he will also take a break for a drink later on in the tavern as well.

"Yeah, I do. Come on." Korrin gestures for him to follow her, a frown lingering on her lips. She's a little annoyed that thanks to Kain, he has her caring about clothing. Her standards aren't even all that high, just don't wear anything that's an eyesore. And he failed that test. "Is that what merchants in your world wear? Honestly?"

"Yes... this is normal clothing... well... perhaps... relatively normal..." Kain admittedly has a weirder idea of clothing than most, mainly because he just doesn't bother with anything aside from his usual armor most of the time. But still. He does come from a world where even the men have some very... pretty... taste in clothing. He follows Korrin along though, glad she's not dismissed him outright.

Korrin snorts softly at that, not convinced. "Either your entire world is colorblind, or you've been away from civilians for so long that you haven't been paying attention. Seriously, just look around you at the non-uniformed people around here and tell me that they're anything close to that. We'll just get something better from the quartermaster."

"I didn't realize... perhaps I could have paid closer attention." That shows how much attention Kain really pays to fashion overall, himself. He maybe could have watched closer, but he had plenty of other concerns in mind, really. He'd thought he could simply throw something together and have it done. "And I suppose this is too bright of a color for a hunter to wear?" He points to the plaidweave, sounding almost disappointed about parting from it.

"Far, far too bright." She shakes her head incredulously at his tone, not sure why anyone would want that color or pattern. "Emprise du Lion is mostly snow and mountains, so we're looking at mostly white. Hunters don't want to be seen by their prey from a distance, after all."

"Ah, a fair point." Truly, something he should have known, and did know, when it comes to being out in the wilderness. It's just that his armor and that alone has sufficed for so long that he knows nothing else. He's clueless and being in a new world that's all the worse here. "What else should I know about this place we're to explore?"

"It's mountainous and cold -just as cold as here, if not more, though there are hot springs. Life is harsh in the area, and I doubt Corypheus' forces have made it any better. There's a quarry supporting the town of Sahrnia. I've been there, before the civil war going on in Orlais, though it was more passing through than actually lingering within their walls. Not a bad place, though I doubt it's the refuge it once was from the harsh landscape, not when they're sending us in along with the normal scouts."

“The mountainous part, I can handle. The cold, on the other hand…” They just don’t have that same type of cold where he’s from. Though he’s more than used to climbing and jumping around the terrain on a mountain… so it’ll be at least halfway tolerable. “It sounds as if we’ll have quite the challenge ahead… but it’s something that I welcome.” He’s still getting used to this place, trying to find where and how he fits. Being with the Inquisition at least gives him a purpose.

"Good, hold to that frame of mind. I'm sure you'll need it at some point during our mission. Just remember that our primary purpose is scouting; the Inquisition needs information and we need to survive to pass it back to them. Getting ourselves killed in one last glorious stand will accomplish jack shit."

Just making sure, because as far as Korrin's seen, Kain is a soldier and sometimes soldiers need to be reminded that they can't fight their way out of everything.

Kain is a little surprised when he realizes that Korrin does indeed already have him pinned down very well. Much like the Inquisition's forces that he's heard about, he would indeed much rather take a direct approach to most things. Go in with spear drawn and take no prisoners.

"Right, of course. Although should they initiate open combat, we may not have a choice... Not that it'll necessarily come to that." But he believes in being ready for the worst case scenario. If they're ambushed...

Korrin's seen him fight and understands his approach to things well, because it's usually her own first impulse. Not the self-sacrifice so much as the direct approach. However, that's not exactly going to help them now; if anything, it'd be a detriment.

"Well, yeah, that's different. If it's us or them, it's going to be us. No question. Let's just try not to make that a first resort, though. And trust me, that'll be difficult for me, too. If I could take out every Red Templar personally, I would."

Looks like he won’t be the only one having to work hard to lay low and not go in swinging a weapon around right away. At least that’s something Korrin shares with him, the warrior mentality… interesting thing to see, in a mage, he respects that.

“These Red Templars sound even more of a problem than the regular sort… am I right in assuming they would be difficult to fight, if it should come to open combat?”

"Oh, yes. From personal experience, I can say they have enhanced speed, strength, stamina and even healing. And those are just the regular ones, not those who are so far gone they've become monstrous creatures that look as though they're made entirely from red lyrium. I saw one at Haven and it was...horrific." Korrin's lips form a thin light at that, trying to focus more on the subject at hand. "Those are even tougher and somehow can cause red lyrium to grow in spikes from the ground."

Kain nods, taking in the things she says, he’ll keep all of that in mind should he find himself facing off against one of them at any time. It’s better going in with some idea of what to expect, the enemy’s primary moves, and so on. “Then we’re doing them a favor by ending their existence.” To lose one’s self to something so horriific is beyond a nightmare to Kain, and he’d certainly rather die than live like that. “How can they… cause it to grow? Do you mean they do that in battle among their attacks?” They’re that in tune with it? This is suddenly sounding worse.

"Something like that. I don't know how else to explain it, and I wasn't that close to see it in action. Something tells me I wouldn't be standing here talking to you if that'd happened. But you're right, it's as much a mercy killing as it is a necessity to take them out." Korrin enters the main hall with him, having changed her mind about the quartermaster. Why go through red tape when they have a perfect crafting place available? "Has anyone told you of the Undercroft?"

Kain has been following along in turn, still getting used to finding his way around this place. It's all so new to him, and he's mostly used to the places he most frequently goes. Though walking about the ramparts at least gives him a good view of things below.

"Right... so we must proceed with caution when fighting them. I suppose my jumping will come in handy in that case... I can avoid it if it bursts out of the ground..." As long as he has a good place to land afterward, anyway. "What's the Undercroft?"

"It's the Inquisiton's crafting center; for armor, weapons, and enhancing them. And as such, they have clothing and leather available to use to suit a proper hunter." And as soon as that's managed, Korrin is setting fire to the plaidweave as soon as it's off the dragoon. Sorry, Kain. It's for the good of Thedas.

Kain nods appreciatively. He's always interested in finding more ways to enhance or at the very least, repair and reinforce his battle equipment. "That sounds useful. I may have to see what it can do for weapons and armor at some point as well..."

He will be sad about the destruction of the plaidweave and may brood over it, but it's for the best, really.
