"Thank you! She went days without a name because nothing fit, but then I thought of this and it just works."
Quillhelmina doesn't move at the mabari's sniffing, but whether that's from fear or not finding Garahel a threat is hard to say. Ellana nods to Inessa, however. "She has a soft tummy. And the quills aren't so bad either. Just a little prickly."
"Oh, I quite understand. It took me a while to name Garahel. Speaking of which...avoid the quills, okay?" Garahel settles for booping noses, wagging his tail happily. Friends, right? Inessa reaches over and strokes the hedgehog's head, smiling as she looks back up to Ellana. "Where did you get her? Was there another giveaway, as with the little nugs?"
Quillhelmina is puzzled by this big creature, but seeing how she's not inside its mouth having to push up her quills, she guesses this is okay. Rolling over onto her stomach, she stands up and comes sniffing around the mabari's face. What is this thing? Can it feed her like Ellana does?
"No, actually. It's pretty strange. There's a chink in the wall in my room that I never really worried about. I couldn't see through it to the next room or anything, and I never considered anything could come through it either. But the day we returned from the Sunless Lands I enter my room and there she is just sitting there. I think she forgot how to get back out, and I didn't know how long she'd been in there." Ellana smiles fondly at her pet. "Though it was long enough to leave a mess on the floor. So I gave her some food and decided to keep her. I blocked off the hole so she wouldn't disappear. I have a feeling she wouldn't remember how to get back to me if she tried to take a trip on her own."
Inessa rests a hand on Garahel's head, a reminder for him to be gentle with Quillhelmina. He sniffs at her anew and ventures the gentlest of licks. His mistress listens to the story with a growing smile, shaking her head at their l companions.
"Oh, poor thing. I would worry about her, too. What does she eat? Is she hungry now?" She should absolutely not encourage food in the library, of course. Even Garahel knows better than to expect treats within. But perhaps outside it, later?
Oh, sir, please. Quillhelmina just met you and this is far too forward! She steps back, retreating into the safety of her scarf nest. Please no more licks.
"She eats plenty of things! I asked one of the rifters who cares for animals about her diet. Fruits, vegetables, even bits of meat. I save table scraps for her, and I don't think she needs to eat now, but she always wants food."
Garahel looks at Ellana and whines a little. Did he do something wrong?
Inessa chuckles and glances over to her darling, bottomless-pit of a mabari. "Oh, I know how that goes. One would think they're horribly neglected, the poor things. When you're done here, I'd be open to making a joint trip for them. Maker knows Garahel will be up for it." The mabari perks up, wagging his tail and cheerful all over again at mention of food.
Ellana is quick to scratch Garahel behind the ears. "She's very little, you know. Size can be intimidating. Even if you'd never hurt her, she can't help but worry about it." She hopes he understands that. Quillhelmina is a friendly little girl, but she's used to fingers coming in for a pet, not a big maw opening and a tongue coming out. It could carry her away into his mouth!
To Inessa, she says, "I'd like that. I just need to... where is it?" Ellana shuffles her papers and then finds the one she needs. "Ah, right. Captivating." Quickly, she crosses out a word and writes in the new above it. "I didn't want to forget to do that. If you give me a few more minutes to edit this, then we can all make the trip together."
That seems to appease Garahel, who makes a contented noise at the ear-scratching and perks up when it seems they won't be here too long. He looks up over to Inessa and wags his tail hopefully. prompting a soft chuckle as she moves her hand away from Quillhelmina. While she casts a curious glance at Ellana's work, she'll refrain from prying in favor of giving Ellana more time.
"Oh, of course. I should put away some of mine, as it is. I always hate leaving that for someone else."
"A friend to the library," she says with a smile before getting back to her editing. She's nearly there, and then she can hand write the pages again later in her room with the corrections before sending it off.
Around five minutes later, she collects her work and sets it all into her satchel, takes her scarf and tosses it around her neck, and carries her hedgehog in one hand as she goes to find her friends.
After making a few notes on what she'd select for research another time, Inessa steps out of the library with Garahel. She waits near the entrance and is rewarded with Ellana's arrival not long after. Before she can respond, Garahel perks up and barks, tail wagging happily. Yes, feed him!
"Indeed. We can't allow our poor companions to suffer any further."
"Oh, I'm sure they suffer greatly," she says with a chuckle. She can't not be in a good mood when Garahel is so happy to be fed. "Warm beds, stuffed full at every meal. How do they cope? Poor things." Quillhelmina has a brain about a fourth of the size of Garahel's, so she doesn't involve herself in the conversation and is merely along for the ride. Ellana curls in her arm to hold her pet against her chest and the hedgehog nestles there comfortably, biting at her scarf a little.
Inessa glances over at Quillhelmina fondly, only not petting her anew because they're walking and she doesn't want to delay when Garahel's appetite has been roused. "A few years ago, I could still hold Garahel in my arms like that. He was larger than Quillhelmina when I first met him, of course, but little enough that it was possible. Now look at him, it'd be impossible."
Of course, having a large war hound is very helpful in many ways, but she can mourn the cuddly pup just a little bit.
"It's hard to imagine starting out that small," she replies with a nod. "But that's true for anyone: people, dogs, even dragons. To start life so tiny that you can be carried, to being so huge you can bowl people over." Looking down at the ball of quills nestled against her, she adds, "At least I don't have to worry about you doing that to me, hm?"
The hedgehog keeps gnawing on her scarf and Ellana just smiles. "Ah, well. Garahel is still a sweet boy in a fearsome war hound's body, right? Are you a sweet boy?"
Garahel barks happily and wags his tail, at the moment more in the mindset of an excited pet than fearsome war hound...but that can change in an instant, should Inessa be threatened. She rests a hand on him, encouraging the mabari to quiet down and scritching him behind the ears a little.
"He's a very sweet boy, who just needs to remember that he's not pup-sized anymore. More often than not he does, thankfully. But other days, I swear it's as though he and Potato have decided to team up."
She glances thoughtfully at the little hedgehog. "...now I'm curious to see if any mages have enlarged her kind or similar, since we have varying miniaturized versions. Though it's probably for the best she doesn't have to compete with them in size."
"Oh, no, could you imagine a mabari-sized hedgehog?" she asks with a quick laugh and a faux expression of alarm. "The quills would be a nightmare. And they're such little rollers. I can picture one rolling down the stairs and impaling someone."
She might be exaggerating a little for effect, but hopefully no mages get the bright idea to try enlarging Quillhelmina's kind.
"I do enjoy having a companion I can carry around with me. I want to keep traveling and exploring, but never wanted someone to have to watch a pet for me. Now I have one who can come with me. She can have a cozy spot in my satchel."
The thought of Quillhelmina -or another hedgehog- big enough to impale anyone on those quills has her wincing a bit. Garahel whines a little as well, not minding the comparable size so much as getting hurt when all he wants is a playmate. But that whine doesn't last for long, when the stairs bring them that much closer to food.
"Agreed, she's perfect the way she is, small size included. Has she seen your other forms? I'm curious to know how Quillhelmina has reacted to them, if so."
"She hasn't, but that would be an interesting experiment." It leaves her thoughtful a moment, until she draws in a breath through her teeth. "It's possibly my predator forms might scare her into hiding behind the bed, and she may never come out again. I'm not sure I should try it."
Little Quillhelmina is a delicate lady, and shouldn't be put in shocking situations where she may wet herself.
"The bird might be all right to try. I'd be a companion as small as she is."
"A small bird...true, that might be much less threatening to her, and less of a shock." Inessa smiles at the scarf-gnawing hedgehog, then holds the door open when they reach it, allowing Ellana and Garahel entrance first. The mabari shows enough self-control to wait for his mistress and not immediately dash for the pantry, but he's still wagging that tail in excitement.
Ellana enters with a thank you, looking around to see what's available to nibble on.
"Though she may be upset and wonder where her food giver has gone." She strokes a hand down Quillhelmina's back and gently pries the scarf from her teeth. "Time for good food, all right? No more fabric."
"Yes, you too. Garahel, sit. Show our friends that you have manners." The mabari promptly sits on his hind legs, all alert and eager as she starts to fetch some mabari treats. "Do you want to give him one, Ellana? Ask him to shake."
"Oh, please!" She loves seeing Garahel do tricks. First she sets Quillhelmina down on a table and settles her scarf around her. Taking a treat from Inessa once her friend has them in hand, she turns to the mabari, a bright smile on her face as she shows him the crunchy treat and holds out her hand.
Eagerly, Garahel lifts his paw. See, he's being good!
Inessa chuckles as she strokes the bundled Quillhelmina, watching the two. "He's never so attentive as when food is a factor, of course. Now you're his new best friend."
"Yay!" Ellana happily shakes and rewards Garahel with the treat. "I think that's true of most animals. I know in the clan there were times we didn't have a lot of food, so we cherished what little we got. Animals don't have this whole structure of society where people grow and sell food, or raise animals for meat, or any of that. They either have to find their own meal, or trust someone to feed them."
It makes Ellana wonder how her hedgehog made due before finding her. Maybe she spoils her a little because of that.
"Mabari can usually guarantee a safe and happy home, but other breeds aren't quite as meticulously kept, let alone other animals. I'm glad Quillhelmina has found someone willing to spoil her." Garahel, practically inhaling that treat, bumps up against Ellana affectionately.
"That makes two of us," she replies before chuckling at Garahel's thank you. She gives his side a hearty pat before going to grab something for Quillhelmina.
"Let's see... I think a bit of dried fruit will be a nice treat." She takes a piece and breaks it up into smaller bits before setting one down on the table in front of the hedgehog. She sniffs at it a moment before deciding it suits and nibbling on it.
"Much different eating style to a mabari, isn't it?"
