MOD PLOT: NOT ALONE DO WE STAND, Part 2

WHO: Grand Tourney attendants
WHAT: Celebrations, slightly marred
WHEN: The last day of the Tourney, and after
WHERE: Wycome
NOTES: Reminder that brackets for all events are here!

I. LAST CHANCE TO PARTY

After the Grand Melee draws to a close, and the Grand Tourney with it, the grounds and adjacent taverns and inns remain crowded with visitors. There's at least one more night of celebration before everyone has to return to their lives. The most raucous of it, as well as the most bragging, originates from the Free Marches, who have taken James Norrington's presence on the winning Inquisition team as an opportunity to claim victory for themselves—the fact that the rest of the winning team was made up of Rifters and a Tevinter is something nearly everyone would prefer to overlook. For many competitors, it's the first night they've been able to indulge in honored Tourney pastimes without jeopardizing their performance in events. For many spectators, it's their last opportunity for the foreseeable future to spend time with new friends from other nations and to prove who can sing their homeland's favored drinking songs the loudest.

When it comes to the Inquisition, something has noticeably shifted. The congratulations for their victories are often sincerely delivered, accompanied by questions about the war effort and what they do. Identifiable rifters and mages may find strangers sitting down next to them, rather than giving them wide and whispering berth, and asking their names. Elves are slightly less likely to be asked to go get a broom or fetch a drink. Arguments about political philosophy don't uniformly fall to one side or the other, but they are more common than they were at the beginning of the week, with heated arguments about the future of this or that nation periodically breaking out over drinks.

Even those arguments are fairly friendly and high-spirited, though, and far outnumbered by the number of less serious conflicts that break out: drinking contests, pie-eating dares, and good old-fashioned dance-offs.

II. CONGRATION YOU DONE IT

To allow time for competitors to set their broken bones and stop bleeding, the award for the Grand Melee is given the following morning, with the Celebrant presented amid fanfare to the winning Melee team. Winners and high-ranking runners-up from other events, though less loudly vaunted, are directed to a tent to pick up their prizes.

The grounds don't immediately vacate, after that, but the mood is distinctly wound-down, while merchants pack up their stalls and revelers nurse hangovers or aching stomachs overloaded with pie. By midday, people have begun remarking on a peculiarity: the prizes meant for competitors from the Anderfels remain unclaimed, and the entire delegation seems to have left in the middle of the night, likely sour grapes over their Grand Melee loss, fiercest warriors in Thedas my ass—though some speculate instead that they've all been kidnapped, or that they fled to avoid being forced to return to their own country.

III. SHIT

The rumors don't have long to percolate before the question of what happened is answered—first by Ina Hachette, a member of the Anderfels court persuaded to defect to the Inquisition, who turns up out of breath and searching for the Inquisition's leaders, and next by a curt message delivered to Inquisition sending crystals that there's a disturbance at the Orlais-Anderfels border. A big one. Invasion-sized.

It's inevitable that the news spreads—living cheek by jowl in tents is not conducive to much secrecy—and soon rumors have run wild throughout the encampment, putting an abrupt end to the festivities as everyone scrambles to gather their forces to leave. Tevinter, on the whole, is the quickest to pack its bags. Whether they know something or are only worried people will turn on them as the finger-pointing begins is anyone's guess. But if it's the latter, they're right to worry, and nearly prevented from leaving by an Orlesian-led mob convinced that they know something. The task of keeping the peace and preventing bloodshed falls to the Inquisition as much as Wycome's local guard, as the tourney dissolves into posturing and wild accusations.

When the danger of an actual fight breaking out passes—mainly once Tevinter is gone—and the crowds thin, the Inquisition's delegation is ordered to pack up and make haste on the journey back to Kirkwall.

I. As one who participated but was eliminated fairly early on, Inessa has been enjoying the events as a spectator. The climactic Grand Melee was particularly exciting, and though she's not normally one for raucous parties or crowds, this time she lingers. The victors deserve congratulations and possibly a drink, though she suspects they'll be bombarded with the latter long before she can reach them.

At any rate, she'll wander around until she finds a good spot to settle, most likely wherever a friendly face can be found. Garahel is naturally at her side, less excitable than usual thanks to the days and days of rich food everywhere. Wherever they pause will be an acceptable place to sleep some of that off.

III.

The dreadful news spreading throughout the grounds effectively snaps Inessa back into work-mode. She allowed herself to unwind during the Grand Tourney, but now it's over and news of invasion has her dwelling on Inquisition matters once again. Defending Orlais will be no easy task, so she wastes no time in packing her things. Fortunately, she brought little and nothing that couldn't be packed rather quickly. With time to spare, she will venture to the neighboring tents and raise her voice a little, politely waiting outside unless or until she's invited in.

"This is Inessa. We're due to leave soon; I've come to see if any assistance is needed?"

"Stop me from wanting to go right to the home front?" Kain has been pacing frantically as he packs things, and is in a bit of a state of disarray. But knowing that his homeland is yet again undergoing war, an invasion at that... It doesn't sit well with him. Sure, he hasn't consistently lived there in years, and he's more of a Warden these days above all else, they're his true family and home... but Orlais is still important to him. He's especially concerned for all of the friends he still has back there. "I know I ought to wait and see what the Inquisition does to respond... and the Wardens, for that matter... but I don't like being here while all of this is unfolding there."

Inessa sighs, expecting as much. She's aware what his homeland means to him, complications and all. If they were speaking of Ferelden, she would be of the same mindset. Garahel shoves his way inside and heads over to Kain, leaning in against him with a soft whine and soulful eyes. His mistress isn't far behind, her expression grave.

"I know you don't, but I need you to try and focus. You leaving now will not change anything, except that you will be doing so without some badly-needed support. If you leave now, you would be giving the Anders what they want. We don't want to make it easier for them, not when they already have Corypheus on their side."

Kain distractedly pets the top of Garahel's head, frowning intensely as he considers the implications of what's happening back home. There are still people there who are important, who he'd left behind. Granted, his closest friends are in the Heartlands, some distance from the invading forces... for now.

"...You're right, of course..." He sighs heavily. "I'm glad I can at least count on you to make sense of things for me when I need it. Corypheus probably wants to provoke a hasty reaction, to catch us off guard... Why else is this happening? Why, anyway? What is there to be gained..."

"We've known it would happen sooner or later. He has claimed the Anderfels; securing Orlais now that it's not tearing itself apart is the next logical step." But she knows that doesn't make it any easier to hear, and she closes in to rest a small hand on his arm.

"We will make him pay for it, with the Inquisition. We're vulnerable to his influence, but they aren't. We'll have to strike at him through less direct means, but they won't be any less important. Alistair and Nathaniel will be working on a plan, I'm certain of it."

"Right... it does make sense but... We can't let that happen, he can't have it. If he does... what becomes of it, of everything... If he takes just one more nation, think of how much power that gives him." He sighs, thinking of his homeland. Beyond Cecil and Rosalie, there are plenty of others who he doesn't want to see be in danger, the more decent nobles he's known from growing up, not to mention all of the Wardens he'd served with back home... wherever they're scattered to now. He assumes many of them to be still at Griffon Wing Keep, potentially, where he'd last seen most of them, but who knows? He's uneasy thinking of them being so close to such a dark influence like that.

"I hope you're right. And I know... believe me, I don't want to risk becoming someone's puppet. I trust in our commanders, of course. It's just not easy awaiting any orders they might have for us."

"I know, but if I'm right about this, we won't be waiting too long. We'll take action once a solid plan is put into place, of that I'm confident. Would it help your nerves to write your friends? We can find a swift messenger afterward." She turns to go through her things to produce parchment and ink. Perhaps the act of putting his thoughts to paper would help calm Kain, at least for a time.

"Being there with them would be even better, but..." He lets out a long sigh and nods. Leave it to Inessa to come up with a good idea that's also really practical at the moment. "...but it would help. It's the next best thing to going there. I ought to write to Cecil and Rosalie, first... perhaps to some of my Warden friends, those that may still be somewhere in Orlais. I would like to ask them if there's anything we ourselves can do... or even if we could urge the Inquisition to take some certain action..." He's not above at least asking, if it turns out that aid is desperately needed.

Listening all the while, Inessa hands over a quill and a large ink well before looking for some sealing wax as well. He can use either his Grey Warden ring or that of his family, as is appropriate. "Even just a brief missive is enough to let them know that they aren't alone. And if they have feasible requests, we'll act. It's the least we can do, until more has been decided."

"Thank you." He reaches to take the supplies she's offering him, setting them all out in front of him alongside some paper. He starts hastily dipping the quill into the ink, a rush of words coming to mind. But he doesn't write yet, pondering over which of those is the right place to start. "You're right, of course... No rash actions should be taken at this time, but we should prepare. I'll need to keep in close contact with them, in order to learn of what's happening out there... and of what we should do to lend aid."

She nods and rests a hand on his shoulder, her gaze grave and sympathetic. "I'll give you some privacy, then, but I won't be far if you need be. You'll know what to say, just give yourself a moment."

Kain nods agreement as well, knowing he's going to need a little time to get his thoughts straight. He's always rather picky when it comes to letters. Look at how he'd tried hard to get something together for Inessa...

He glances at her, placing a hand upon her own. "And... thank you. For being here. For talking me out of a potential mistake. For... well, for everything, but that's a bit vague. Still, you always have better ideas than I do, at a time like this." And what he definitely needs now is to shake off the frustration of being so far from his friends. Besides, he has the one he most needs right here.

A small smile forms as she nods, always glad to do what she can. And where their situations reversed, she would trust him to be the steadying influence she would need at that time. "You're always welcome, Kain. Garahel, come." And she'll guide him out, waiting with some tea until he finishes.
