Making care packages - Closed

WHO: Kylo Ren, Newt, Jang
WHAT: Talking about the attack
WHEN: Before the rescue mission heads out, after the attack
WHERE: Mage Tower Mess Hall
NOTES: No actual mission, just talking and coming up with plans and care packages supplies

At one of the long tables, there are a large number of maps spread out, showing the coasts and cities. Scattered elsewhere around it are pieces of paper, logs, supply lists and a partial roll of ships that the Inquisition has access to. Stretched over the largest map is a thin sheet of vellum which has various notes, possible routes and comments sketched on it.

"Ok...I really wish we had something faster than wind. I've been talking with Thor, they need supplies. What do you think we need to get? He wasn't able to get me a list, but he's got other things on his mind at this time. We've got some time, but better to have em here, ready to go than have to get everything together quickly."

"Healing and food should both be top priorities," Newt chimes in from where he paces on his side of the room. He can't keep still, tangling his hands together as he walks back and forth across the floor. He always tells himself and others that worrying only adds to suffering; there is no use for it. But in the end, no matter the conviction of his words, he always worries.

"And we should make sure we have ways of preserving both," he adds. "We'll likely need to prepare a good amount of elf root, and whatever food can last on difficult journeys."

"Probably should have blankets as well," he adds.

"We want to let Forces worry about the unknowns. We don't know numbers and we don't know their abilities." Kylo speaks in a low voice, standing near by - stern as ever - all in black. He watches Jang take notes and nods to Newt.

"Newt is right: our priority should be getting our people out safely and taking care of them. We don't know if we have the numbers to even deal with these people and Corypheus and his dragon." It was a lot of unknowns, honestly.

"I believe plans are in place to at least figure out the unknowns during the rescue attempts," Newt nods. He's mostly trying not to think about the large amount of unknowns lurking about, himself.

"I somehow doubt we actually have those numbers, especially after this recent attack," he remarks. It needs to be said; he would prefer to think otherwise, but Newt has always been pragmatic; not one to hide behind frivolous lies in order to avoid hard truths. Well. Mostly.

"So. Items for food, healing, aid, shelter," he lists off, nodding as he continues to pace. "We should also send along extra weapons and armor, just in case. Extra clothing. I don't know what the climate is like, either in Minrathous or the escape routes, but we should prepare for anything."

"It wouldn't be smart to engage the dragon or Corypheus at all, if we did end up skirmishing against him or his Venatori. But this isn't a strategy meeting, so it's moot." Kylo answers, unflinchingly blunt. He didn't want to see Jang or anyone else try to come up with some hair brained scheme that wouldn't work and would only get them killed. He leans against the wall, one foot lifted to hold him up against it as he thinks about their current list.

"Runes might be a good idea." He remembered being given one to combat the cold when he'd first arrived but hadn't bothered with them since. "I can speak to Rey and see what supplies the Gallows has to offer. She would have a better idea of inventory and what we can carry."

"And no, I am not a mage. I don't do magic." Well he did a sort of magic, but it certainly wasn't anything like he had seen Newt capable of doing during their short stint in the Sunless Lands. The Force was a bit different from all of that.

"I've signed up to help with the Deep Roads escape route, myself," Newt says. "So we should prepare supplies for the inevitable encounters with darkspawn we'll be likely to encounter down there."

There will come a time, Newt knows, in which there will be a strategy meeting, for this Corypheus and his pet dragon, along with his Venatori, who especially make him uneasy, given how much they remind him of Grindlewald's own followers. But that is not for today. Small mercies, at least.

"Runes would probably be an excellent idea," he nods. "I believe they have ones for defense and protection, yes?"

"I think it's safe to say that, no matter what we plan for, we should expect for...surprises," Newt says, a wry quirk to his mouth. "But that reminds me. We should make sure we have lyrium potions for those who might need it."

"Ah. I've yet to see the Deep Roads, but I doubt the sights are any different than every other hole we've had to crawl into." Though probably a little more troublesome than the Catacombs were going to be. He had already decided, after talking to Thor, that he would help in the rescue effort there.

"If they can't walk they're a liability. There'd be no point if they just slow the entire group down." As soon as he says it, he fully expects an argument, which is why he just shakes his head and shrugs. "At least in my experience. If you want to help stragglers that's up to the group, I assume."

"They're actually quite fascinating," Newt chimes in. "There's a lot of history and culture to be found there." A beat. "Along with darkspawn. But they're not as bad as people make them out to be. Er. The Deep Roads, that is. Darkspawn are always terrible."

Newt blinks at that.

"Just because they'll slow the group down doesn't mean they deserve to be left behind," he says. "That rather defeats the point of a rescue mission, doesn't it?"

He has to hope the rescue groups as a whole have a more sympathetic approach than Kylo, at least.

"It's not like I'll go out of my way to leave people behind, I'm just pointing out - on the topic of injured, it would pose a greater risk to everyone if we were slowed down by it and anyone with military or tactical sense would know that." He makes an irritated sound and shoves his hands in his pockets, already feeling the judgement that comes from this sort of world view.

"Sacrifice the few for the good of the many, and all that. If we can treat injured and keep moving at the same time it won't be a problem." He lapses into a stony silence after that, realizing keenly his views have put him in a negative light. "I'm not saying don't save people."

"I don't see why another solution can't be reached," Newt says, unwilling to let go of the point. "If need be, groups can split up; some can go ahead and others can slow down for the sake of the injured. Or something. There's no reason anyone should be left to die."

Newt, who really isn't overly fond of people (or so he's always telling himself), finds himself especially impassioned on this point.

And then Kylo says that. "Sacrifice the few for the good of the many," and all Newt hears, in his mind, is "For the greater good." He visibly tenses, the expression on his face turning sour. He rubs a hand across his face, a calming mechanism so he doesn't actually start a shouting match. This isn't productive to the task at hand, and yet, from his own experiences, Newt cannot let this go.

"I know someone back home who thinks like that," he says, quietly but firmly. "He was trying to start a war for the 'good of the many.' He's sacrificed a good amount of people for the cause as is."

"If I was trying to start a war, you'd know it. I'm talking about using common sense. If we were to split off and too many risked getting captured and brought to Corypheus they'd be as good as dead anyway. And if we were slowed down by it we would all be captured." He glares heatedly at Newt, pushing away from the wall he's been leaning on to take a few steps closer and making himself look as tall and threatening as possible.

At Jang's words he comes back to himself and he looks in her direction, fists clenched at his sides. He was bubbling with anger already after Newt's words.

"This isn't your home. We still have decisions to make that affect all of us. We will save as many as possible, but there's no need to get everyone killed or captured trying." He shoots a glare at Newt again before backing off.

My apologies that this is so late!

Newt lets out a huff of sigh that one might more aptly compare to the snort of an Erumpent about to charge, if one were feeling particularly charitable. He's about to step forward himself, if only to let Kylo know that he isn't one to be intimidated easily, when Jang's words reach him.

"No, it isn't my home," Newt agrees, pinching the bridge of his nose. If he'd wound up here before his adventures in New York, he would have likely punched Kylo in the face by now. As it is, he has some self-restraint, if only because he knows that the last thing they need is for all of them to add to the various tensions in the air.

"Jang is right. We need to focus on helping where and when we can. What else should we bring with us?"
