Connor 60 - Docks

Connor drinks in the sensory assault of the docks. The gliding light upon the water as it laps against the pilings and the ships, the creaking of wood and rope in the wind, the cries of gulls, the stink of barnacles and sea water wash over him, his mind focusing on none in particular. He remembers another shore, more civilized and industrial. The air here is almost intoxicatingly fresh compared with that in his memory. The tang of chemicals had laced it with bitterness and his synthetic lungs had labored quietly in mimicry of organic life made to filter such gases and particulates. Unlike that narrow straight he remembers, the docks of Kirkwall open out upon the sea- a sea... he wonders what the locals call it, and what lies beyond.

The wind wips his hair, dark waves lifting and bashing against his forehead almost in time with the waves. He stands like this until he suddenly realizes how cold he is, and chides himself for forgetting once again that he's human now.
