For Petrana

"Books!" Of course she's looking at books. He's found her in the library, it's not like one would find druffalo in here. Probably. Teren's not here, so it's very unlikely. But there's something nice about finding someone buried in interesting books rather than needing healing or petting a dozen dogs.

"And on enchantment, no less. Do you have a specific enchantment in mind, or is it more of a general study?"

The smile she offers up is somewhat wan—Julius had been returned to her in far from ideal shape, and furthermore has proved a difficult enough patient she's found herself grateful for his inability to walk unaided, and thus inability to free himself of the healers' recommendations. It is like her, of course, to find respite from one stressful situation by burying herself in another, as she looks down at the book and her notes before her—

“Neither, precisely,” she admits, frowning slightly at the page. “The methods of enchantment that I mastered once before will not serve as they did. If I wish permanence, I will have to adapt my methods. And this will only do me so much good—I shall soon have to speak with the tranquil.”

A little shake of her head: “I should have done it weeks ago.”

Then she might have sent more aid to the front, and less sentiment.

Weeks ago, which suggests she'd some idea that she thought might have helped in the war. Anders shakes his head, settling in near her and sobering.

"Don't borrow that stress. What happened, happened. We lost. This can serve for the next fight." It's not as simple as that. He knows it. But dwelling on what ifs, especially in light of how poorly things had gone, can only be stressful and discouraging. "Can I ask what it is you plan on doing?"

He probably can't help. But there's a chance, and talking through ideas might be nice considering what so many conversations around here are turning into right now.

A noncommittal sound is all he gets for that reassurance; better than arguing the point, not as good as conceding it. She lets it pass, regardless, because the matter of her work is (as ever) more interesting discussion than the matter of her motives—

“I must reinvent the wheel,” she says, wryly. “I plan to, I suppose, create an entirely new methodology. A sort of halfway point between magic as was, and magic as is—in Sulleciel will alone would serve, but its apparent that Thedas resists such...exertions. Mm. It is fascinating to me that the enchanting of objects here is done not by mages, when to do so would necessarily define one that way in Sulleciel, but that is a matter of curiosity rather than practical concern. Beyond dictating with whom I will be obliged to study, of course—lasting enchantments exist here. I will simply have to find a way to add mine.”

'Simply'. She almost wishes for Marius; how he would take to such a challenge. But he isn't here, and she refuses to consider herself less than equal to the task.
justice_is_blond: (Actually let's go with that idea)

He nods along as she talks, a flicker of a smile at the opening.

"I've wondered along a not-too-dissimilar trail of thought before. There's a world of mages where they can do any number of practical things with magic, cook food, bring things to their hands, clean things, repair nearly anything, and I wish I'd some idea of how to replicate it with our magic. But there's no precedent here for most of what they can do, unfortunately."

Anders shakes his head and leans back in his chair, glancing around before he puts his feet up on another.

"If I'm to be honest, I'd recommend speaking with Dwarves about it too. The Tranquil will have some idea of what you're looking for with magic, but the root of their creativity and inventiveness has been torn away from them. You may need both when it comes to bringing your wheel to our wagon."

That, and Dwarves that enchant generally do so because they wanted to all along. Making the Tranquil work doesn't feel all that far from slavery sometimes, despite how they all seem amenable to it.
