Wearing the finest thing she owns, and absolutely concerned about how appropriate it is for a) this situation, b) her age, and c) her position here, Fifi has the look about her of someone who has gone to the trouble of Looking Nice but would very much like to be noticed as little as possible.

She sits at the table with her hands in her lap, staring at the silverware and saying nothing, not daring to move until she has seen someone else do it first so she can copy their manner.

"You look positively lost," Sidony comments, sat by Fifi and leaning on her hands. There's something of a gentle smile on her face and she moves forward to adjust her cutlery, motioning with a hand here and there before she begins to speak, casual - as if she is not explaining etiquette to someone clearly out of their depth.

"Try this one first, and then you work from the outside in."

Eyeing the girl's movements, Fifi gives a small nod and then mimics her, unable to resist glancing around at everyone. She knows logically that this isn't meant to be actually high-society, and that everyone is more or less on equal footing, but that doesn't make it any easier to break out of her comfort zone.

"You've done this before?" she asks, with a little smile.

She is gentle and careful, far more different than she might be with anyone else. There's no need to be rude to someone who is at least earnest in their desire to try, and unlike others, Sidony has no bias against those of different races. Social class is another matter entirely, of course, but she'll bite her tongue on that front for now.

"Many times," she says, voice airy and quiet. "My mother is a great believer in the strength of a fancy dinner party, as much as we might wish for otherwise."

"Why's that?"
Fifi tilts her head slightly, taking a bite of her salad and chewing as she listens.

"Why does she believe or why do we wish otherwise?" A small smile. "She thinks it the best way to match us with a spouse and we'd much rather be doing anything else, other than the dancing. The company often leaves much to be desired."
