[ It’s dark, foggy, and kinda cold. Add some alcohol to your local ferryman and you have a foolproof recipe for a slow ferry ride. Factor in the late hour and you’re likely to have the skiff mostly to yourself.

Sssooooooooooo... [ Athessa stretches through the word before leaning with practiced nonchalance against—shit, fuck, there goes that stack of crates. Ahem. ]

It’s ok, I don’t think anything breakable was in those, [ There definitely was. ] you ride this ferry often?

[He is. Very much so. --Which she almost says aloud, before catching herself short and veering after the conveniently placed introduction. Wysteria extends her (soft) hand to shake and smiles cheerfully.]

Miss Wysteria Poppell. Research division. I sometimes assist the Seneschal with documentation.

[A deeply inflated statement in every direction.]

So you said, [ Still, she shakes her hand. Athessa's hands aren't soft, nor pale, and she definitely has never taken care of her nails once in her life. ] without the extra credentials.

Still awkwardly trying to make conversation because this ferry is so slow and boring.

[ And still awkwardly shaking hands. She drops Miss Poppell's hand and returns to a safely self-contained posture of crossed arms. ]

You...like doing that research stuff?

[She laughs, a little self-deprecating or maybe just a little witless. It's difficult to say. On the plus side, with Athessa's awkwardness confirmed, Wysteria blooms to fill the conversational space with ease:]

I do. It's like having a very small adventure in the comfort of your very own-- well, home isn't quite the right word, but it's near to it. And the Inqui-- Riftwatch really does encourage its agents to be in the field, even its researchers. I cannot tell you what a relief it is to finally do a bit of trouncing around in all sorts of grim and grimy places to look at interesting bits of magic. Do you know, I'd hardly been here three months before I was sent off to Markham to speak at the colleges there? Why, at home they'd have never had me. Not before I'd gone old and gray, anyway.

[Deep breath.]

And you? Do you like... what exactly do you do in Scouting? When we're not actively in battle, I mean.

Mostly we run around looking for stuff, or verifying intel your division gives us, [ Suddenly intently interested, she sits next to Wysteria and takes on a conspiratorial tone. ]

I've heard of people being sought out to be recruited into Riftwatch, which makes sense and whatever, but it got me thinking: if you know who to recruit, that kinda means that you have to have files or something on people, right?

So does that mean that there are files on everyone already in Riftwatch? What kind of stuff would those files have? That'd be Research's purview, wouldn't it?

[heirring]

Oh, well-- [Actually, it's a good question. She pauses to give it some serious consideration, a thoughtful frown forming there at the corners of her mouth and the pinch kfnher brow.]

You know, I suppose there must be. Files, I mean. And yes, I would expect the Provost to-- although it could be-- well, I suppose it might actually fall within what the Seneschal oversees. But yes, I'd think that some of Research division's notes do go into--

[Wait, there's a better question.]

Like I wonder if they go so far as to list favorite foods. Or past relationships. Or you know...
