[open] can somebody please just tie me down

WHO: Barrow + you
WHAT: Bedrest and recuperation from Awful Things
WHEN: August
WHERE: mostly the Gallows
NOTES: I'll make starters if people want 'em

I.
Bedrest is ideal for people who like to read, or sleep, or sit around pondering life's mysteries. Although Barrow likes sleep as much as the next person, and reading is fine, he has little use for life's mysteries and finds more often than not that he is simply staring at the ceiling and unfairly wishing ill on the medic who impressed on him the need for his joints to mend this way.
He is, perhaps, a little grumpier than usual, but also absolutely desperate for any form of stimulation, so visitors are welcome. Especially if they have treats.

II.
When he's up and about again, Barrow knows better than to go straight to the training pitch and start swinging his hammer around, so instead he defaults to the more leisurely activity of ferrying off to the nearest pub and parking himself there to absorb whatever jollity is occurring at the moment.
He probably drinks too much, especially now, with so much going through his mind; but it's hard to help it, when there's very little else to do and so much he doesn't want to think about. At least he's a pleasant and agreeable drunk, not all that different from when he's sober, but with the sort of absent-minded nihilism that has historically made him either a good lay or a recipient for one's woes. He's rather more open to the latter these days, though the former has its place, at least for the right person.

He could jump in and clarify the diseased genitals in question belonged to patients, not lovers, but that look in Barrow's eye is more of a concern. Colin places the bedclothes back over Barrow's feet and sinks back in the chair.

"By the look of things, you may be," he says gently. "But there's no shame in needing to rest in order to get there. It's simply what bodies need, like plants need water." A pause. "And just...between us, after something awful like this, I don't usually sleep very well. I wake up with nightmares every night."
keenly: (I deserve nothing more than I get)

"Yes," Colin says with a chuckle. Barrow didn't have to respond in kind in order to feel solidarity, that he's not alone in this. "I can always roll you one if you need one. Or just leave you some paper. Really good to have in the middle of the night so you can get back to sleep."
keenly: ('cause I was hoping that)

"Ah!" Colin's face lights up at Athessa's name. "Our amateur apothecary. She's one of my favorite people."
keenly: ('cause worry is wasteful)

[personal profile] keenly 2020-08-03 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Colin beams and bobs his head a moment. Then, circling back:

"You can talk to her about anything. And me. I...wanted to ask how you feel, and not in a physical sense, but I don't want you to think you have to answer."
keenly: (there I shall go singing)

[personal profile] keenly 2020-08-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Colin nods again, familiar with the feeling.

"I think our minds just have to make room for what happened to us, at first. It's a lot. And in my experience, it gets worse before it gets better."
keenly: (and not to worry)

Whatever was calm in Colin's face is replaced by something eerily similar but not at all the same: a distance, as if his ears have been filled with the sounds of bees and his core has gone numb. It takes him a moment to realize he is meant to react. He recalls what it was Barrow said and nods.

"Yes. It is." He collects a little more of his awareness. "People say the real shame belongs to the one did it to you. But he's not coming back to claim it, so you're the one left holding it."

"I'm glad you're not," Colin says gently, still feeling somewhat adrift but at least cognizant of what is being said. "That's worth holding onto."

A slow blink. "I don't know if I took care of mine or not. I half-expect him to turn up to kill me any day. Hopefully he just...got drunk and fell off a pier, or something."
keenly: (but there's only so far I can go)

"Why wouldn't they?" He doubts Barrow has all the information, but the bitter question is out anyway. Colin is an embarrassment before the Chantry, and as far as he knows, the leadership is aware of that. "Our commander used to be a pirate. We let in murderers all the time. We forgive murderers. Someone pushed Athessa down the stairs and no one's even found out who. Mages, though, mages are always trouble. You think they'd care about losing one mage? They have plenty of others."

keenly: (would fix it all)

Colin looks over at him, eyes softening considerably at the offer. Something in him has lifted. Here he came to lend an ear to Barrow's troubles only to find Barrow has dispersed some of his own.

"Not till you're off bedrest," he says with a teasing smile.
keenly: (but I just played along)

His profession is his armor.

"Can I ask you a question? You don't have to answer."

"Why did you leave the Order?"
keenly: (it would be)

[personal profile] keenly 2020-08-16 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Colin laughs softly. “So you left the Order exactly in the same way I left the Circle. If you’d given me some nonsense about resigning in protest for ‘moral reasons’ I’d’ve judged you then. Good people resigning just leaves mages with a lot of bad Templars.”
