OPEN LOG: A beach party.

WHO: Everyone.
WHAT: A beach party.
WHEN: On a very hot day. At some point during the month.
WHERE: A beach just outside of Kirkwall.
NOTES: It is a beach party.

During a particularly hot and oppressive week in Kingsway, the Diplomacy division announces it will be diverting some of its funds to organize a party on a nearby beach. Kirkwallers are invited as well - a relationship-building sort of effort - but the party is mostly intended for morale boosting for Riftwatch itself.

The party features the following:

  • Transportation to this lovely beach from the Gallows and from Kirkwall.

  • Sunbathing and swimming in skimpy (or non-skimpy, if you're a fuckin square) bathing suits.

  • Live music and dancing.

  • Delectable grilled meats (and some vegetables, if you're a fuckin square).

  • Rum drinks served in hollowed-out fruits.

  • A sandcastle-building competition.

  • A swim race.

  • A few fun little sailboats bobbing around out on the water.

Does all that sound too wholesome? Great! There's also a cave system in the cliffs next to the beach. These little grottos are full of nooks and crannies and are perfect for a bit of sinful action after dark; in one cavern, there'll be some gambling games where some of Kirkwall's citizens are losing money; in another, you're likely to run into people making out.

Have fun! Soak up sun! Don't get in trouble! Or do, whatever, it's a beach party.

Miles, drink in hand, all but throws himself down onto the sand next to Julius with a little whoosh of breath. He's spent the better part of the last 6 weeks (impatiently) convalescing, and after a day of sun and fresh air and a little moving around, he looks a lot better than he has in a while. A little flushed in the firelight, his hair and shirt still damp, his eyes bright. It's clear the day has done him a world of good. He needed to burn off all that accumulated nervous energy, and now he looks...well, refreshed, if not relaxed.

"It's been forever since I had a good swim," he says, grinning. "You get out into the water at all?"

Julius looks over, clearly pleased to see Miles in better health. "Just to wade," he answers. "I never learned how to swim properly, which seems a bit strange now that I say it, since I'm currently living on an island. What about you?"
forwardmomentum: (tell me that you're alright)

Miles lets out a surprised laugh. "Wait, really? I'd highly recommend it -- especially in light of the whole living on an island part. Though, uh, I'm not really keen on taking a dive in the water over there."

There are better places around to swim -- here, for instance. How did he go all summer not knowing there was a beach here? Not that he's been able to move around much lately. Miles pushes his damp hair from his forehead -- aside from a few ill-advised attempts at trimming it himself, his military haircut is somewhat overgrown and it makes him look sillier by the week.

"Damn near spent all day in it. It's excellent exercise. Great for bad bones, y'know." He grins, wagging the fingers on one hand. "Wish I could do more of it, honestly. I spent every summer on a lake -- fishing and swimming with my cousins, sailing with my father. Well, capsizing, mostly."

He smiles at the image of a younger Miles going (harmlessly) overboard. "It sounds pleasantly chaotic. I grew up next to a lake, myself. I remember when I made Enchanter, I pulled some strings for a room with a view of the water. But for perhaps obvious reasons, swimming and sailing were, ah, actively discouraged." Belatedly, he realizes it might not be obvious to a Rifter, so he adds: "Escape attempts, you see. But there's nothing to prevent me from learning now, I suppose. Everyone seemed to be having an excellent time."

"Ah." Miles's eyebrows lift in understanding. "Yeah, from what I've heard about life at the Circle, that tracks. Seems a shame to have such a lovely view, knowing you can't visit it. But you're right -- certainly no time better than the present, eh? It's never too late to learn to swim. My mother didn't learn until after she married my father. Her home planet's all desert."
