"This is what you wonder?" This, from a man who had to be coaxed into removing his boots. "The Anderfels, they're cold at night. Clothing drying by the fire or in the wind, I think, is better than freezing."
Which is to say, yes.

"A silver lining to every cloud," he says, and steps lightly into the water. For all his whining, he barely registers the cold and gives no reaction, only wading out to join her. "I don't know if you've noticed, but a good portion of Riftwatch is very easy to look at."

But as soon as she's said that, she strips off one layer, a sort of surcoat of linen that's been fluttering around her knees all this time. Underneath is more linen, a sand-colored shirt, left untied at the collar, and her trousers, already dark with lake water where she hasn't bothered to cuff them. Balling up the surcoat, she tosses it toward the rest of their things, but it's too light to make it all the way. "My trust, it is in you, Vanadi. No drowning."

It still leaves him with two layers of thinner shirt, which will do. On the way back out toward her, Vanadi reaches out a hand -- the one with the gleaming shard in it -- to request Aenor's.

"Parties, yes. A bit of travel. A business venture here or there. There weren't many demands on my time, you see."

"Oh, it's much better company, to be sure." He eyes her thoughtfully, and with decidedly more interest, "How able a swimmer would you say you are?"

I lived along the Lattenfluss, but I didn't swim in it, lies unsaid. For the purposes of Riftwatch, she's spent her life crossing the dead lands between oases. Traveling the length of the river, endlessly back and forth, was another life entirely.
