It's respectably early but respectfully not too early when Madi's carefully neat handwriting appears in the Lord Ambassador's enchanted book:

Lord Ambassador Rutyer, I would like to request an audience at your convenience. Rest assured it is not urgent by any means.

"I am looking for a man called Bastien."

That's Madi's opening line, after appearing in the doorway to Bastien's office and knocking on the open door. She looks about the office, naturally curious about what the contents might say about the owner. Not that she has much of any context to place anything in, but there's still value in seeing things without any bias.

When she looks to the man in question, aware of who he is even if they haven't been introduced formally, it's with a slight tint of amiable amusement.

"Do you know where I might find him?"

Her ready reply, thanks to having the book handy while she conducts yet more research in the library, is brief:

This evening will be amenable, thank you. I will meet you in your office, unless you would prefer a change of scenery.

No; your presence will be enough of a charming change of pace. I shall prepare a fine glass of wine.

Madi arrives right on time — or as right on time as one can be with such an ambiguous appointment time as "this evening" — and actually takes the time to announce herself to Benedict, as is technically proper, before she greets Byerly with a nod and a slight wave of her fingers to bid him stay seated should he appear to be about to stand.

"Thank you for agreeing to speak with me on such short notice," she says, and smooths her skirt as she sits across from the Ambassador's desk.

"Of course," he replies, and settles back into his chair. (Of course he was about to stand; it's only polite.)

"May I offer you something to drink? Water? Coffee? Wine?"
