'meet-cute'

[quotation marks included because 'cute' goes out the window if emet-selch is involved, let's be honest.

anyway. it's very close to the bumping-into-someone-else moment, except at the very last moment-- there's what seems to be a shadowy purple blur from the other side of that pile of books, resolving off to the side, where emet-selch appears to have abruptly relocated. with his own small collection of books still tucked under one arm, he brushes off the sleeve of his coat before glancing at the state of allumin's pile; whether it's a few off the top at the near-miss or the whole damn pile, though, his reaction is the same.]

It is generally advisable not to block one's own view. You ought to count yourself lucky you haven't run into the wall.

[a bit of amusement, there. he's not continuing on his way, but he also is not making a move to help, just leaning against the shelves here.]

Evidently, you were not.

[please be more careful, sir. he just lets allumin deal with the books, though while he watches; this isn't his problem, or at least not his fault.

he adds, though, with a raised brow:]

But did you truly not think someone who had any familiarity with portal and transportation magicks might be capable of something similar?

[portals... not so much, now, but still.]

[being looked down upon is, unfortunately, The Emet-Selch Experience™. it is simply a part of the Vibe.]

Regretfully, it does seem more or less impossible here, or else I would certainly make more use of it.

It may well be, yes-- though the fact such a thing was necessary to produce a similar result does, I believe, lend more credence to the idea that it simply isn't a possibility by standard magical means.

[which is, well. the ways magic works here can be both interesting and trying, and this is definitely more of the latter.]

Not impossible with assistance, mayhap. But this is a form of magic which, by the means I am accustomed to, comes naturally, rather than requiring the help of so many devices.

[conduits, yes, in some cases. anchors. but it's always been natural to him, at least.]

Given that simply being here appears to have reduced the scope of such magicks, I am inclined to think not-- besides, were it merely something like fear, one could hardly expect every single person wielding it to feel its effects. There are ever those who are willing to push further.

You consider it pessimism, to think that surely some intrepid mage or another might have succeeded at something if it were a possibility? [his arms fold, there, head cocked at a slight angle.] If humanity as a whole has proven anything to me before, it is that they are willing to a fault to simply fling themselves forward in pursuit of whatever they're after at the time.

But I will allow that I have not known perception to be a hindrance on magical capabilities, in my experience, only one's nature. Any lack of capacity for it tends to be inherent.

A possibility, but I would say it bears consideration that there is open-mindedness to all possibilities... and then there is working off what exists already or is most likely to be true, and the latter will often provide you better results.

[he's not unaware of allumin's book problem, but also, it's a problem of his own making and emet-selch is content to just let it be. allumin can deal with it if he decides to.]

There are always things magic simply cannot accomplish. Boundaries one cannot infringe upon. Test them, by all means, but once you've found where they lie, they are best left alone.

[there must always be rules governing how it functions.]

[ah, he was beginning to wonder how long it would take for him to say something-- if he even would, or if he'd end up dropping the books first. one corner of his mouth quirks faintly, at that, and he waves one hand idly.]

Yes, of course. [he may be excused. there's a hint of amusement there, both for that and the second apology.] I won't keep you from your work any longer.

I should certainly hope that I would.

[that touch of amusement in his voice is going absolutely nowhere, as he turns to set his own small collection of books down.]

They are already stuck with me, you see-- and thus I expect you will, in fact, see me around often enough.
