Because he clearly hasn't had that. Practice. It's not said unkindly, just a gently offered observation as she draws up alongside him in the training yard.
After all, Derrica had once been a novice with her stave. She understands what it is to build those skills from nothing at all.

"A cloth grip will help...?" The question of confirmation is almost less a question and said more like he's working through some thoughts in his head. Trying to find solutions to problems that really aren't that big of a deal, like how much is a cloth grip and can he afford one on his salary because he's not familiar very much with the economy hear yet? Or can he get one from the armory? Are there any to spare in the Armory? What does he do if there isn't?
Eventually, he arrives at a solution. It's not maybe the best one, but it is at least, in his mind, efficient for the time being. His head bobs again, and he stands up with commitment to the solution he has arrived at, and...
He carefully rips the bottom half of his shirt off like one would for an improvised bandage, and then bends down to pick up the staff before wrapping the torn bit of his shirt around it. The shirt can be mended later, he thinks, and it's fine because it's one of the simple shirts he arrived in so that means he doesn't care about it if it's a bit damaged really (he can always wear a tunic over it if he cares that much).
"Will this work?" he asks as soon as he's finished making sure the cloth is tied securely to the staff.
