This month, our heroes' sleep is getting more and more troubled. Here are some excuses to write about it.
I. SLUMBER PARTY: Mid-month, an infestation of hardy, prolific Antivan fleas requires everyone to avoid spending prolonged periods of time in their bedrooms while local alchemist Lloyd Meyers eradicates the bugs with his proprietary smoke bombs (and an equally proprietary flea bath for the Gallows' many pets). While the rooms air out for two or three nights post-treatment, bed rolls are available on the floor of the unstaffed dining hall. Sleeping outside in the courtyards is also an option, but a sudden squall of a thunderstorm will drive people inside on the second night.
Footnote: Characters who live in the city are welcome to join this slumber party anyway. Maybe they miss the ferry ashore, maybe they're afraid of tracking fleas into their own homes, maybe they already did track fleas into their homes and Lloyd is treating them too, etc.
II. ROOM SHARE: Does the thought of sleeping in the dining hall with all of your coworkers make you break out in hives? Have you missed the ferry on any other evening of the month? Lowtown has inns, and Riftwatch has a docks-side warehouse with a few side rooms outfitted as bedrooms. But there are only so many rooms available, so you might wind up sharing a room (or a bed) with a friend or whoever is nearby and desperate.
III. CAT NAP: A lack of sleep—whether it be from the nightmares, the workload, routine insomnia, or staying up too late playing Truth or Dare during the Antivan Flea Incident—might make a cat nap on a desk, in a reading nook, or over breakfast particularly appealing. And bad dreams don't need more than a few minutes to get rolling.
IV. CAMP OUT: Investigating reports of enemy scouts in the mountains, traveling along the roads to a neighboring city-state on a diplomatic errand, looking into reports of weird magic on the Wounded Coast, or heading north to provide some assistance to the war effort? All might require pitching a tent and bunking down for the night with your colleague, whether you like them or loathe them.
V. NORMAL NIGHT: If you’re already sharing a room or bed with someone, you don't need this post. But you can still use it for your nightmare threads.
VI. BETTER IDEA: Do whatever you want. Live your dreams.

She means that she wants to go to the Crossroads in general, but she can't deny that having Ellie there is, in a single word: smart. Both of them have relevant experience and they work well together. They could fix this. Bring everybody a bit of relief.
The thought of that is comforting to Abby. Maybe even a little energising.
... Or maybe not when she has to pause to yawn yet again, so hard it makes her tear up.
"Christ," she mutters, and wipes her eyes. "No chance we could set off right now, is there."

That's settled. It's a relief even if she didn't think Abby would refuse; they work well together, and Ellie trusts Abby's ruthlessness. They both would do what needs to be done.
She hides the awful urge to yawn along with Abby and fails, wiping it off her mouth with a low grumble.
"I've tried to get there once on the griffons," she says -- and it's probably cruel that she mentions the flying part after Abby's agreed.
"It's not as straightforward as it looks."

None of it is ideal, but living like this is worse. She's tired. She's cranky. She's yelling at people she likes and then feeling like a shithead for it later. It isn't tenable.
"I went with the party that went to the Second Gate."

Maybe it bodes well that Ellie's comfortable showing what a shithead she is, just a little bit on purpose. Maybe it doesn't. But something in her eyes says it's an admirable thing that Abby agreed, even knowing she'll have to face her worst fear to do it.
It's huge progress. Letting herself openly wear the respect that Abby's earned from her.

Later, Abby will realise that Ellie was actually giving her props in her own way but right now she's caught out staring as she tries to figure it out on the spot. After a beat she clears her throat, and awkwardly moves through it, electing to ignore the whole thing.
"Yeah." She does know. "It's really different over there. Like going to another planet, or something." Wait. "Again." Christ, pull it together. "Adra told me they're the ruins of old Elven cities."

Instead she pulls a slight face.
"Seems like every time we find some weird shit in ruins it's elven or dwarven." A pause. "Actually, I take that back. The haunted place we stayed in was definitely human. Maybe it's just ruins."

She feels a little better though. Having a halfway normal conversation with Ellie doesn't stop her from feeling like a tired grouchy bitch but it does help to hear that other people are going through it too. She knuckles an eye.
"... Will you let me know when you're thinking of going?" She figures she'll hear around it from her leader but, "You already know about the shit with the griffons." And then she won't have to bother anybody else with it.

Ellie huffs under her breath, reaches up to muffle a yawn. Nothing in the world will make this any less strange, but at least it feels like they have some common ground. It helps. Abby is capable, dependable. Ellie knows the way she fights, and she's terrifying as an enemy. Much better to have on your side.
"And yeah. You bet. Unless Yseult says different, I'll save you a spot."

Okay, she can't keep standing here and yawning, she has to move. She was actually on her way toward the mess hall to source some kind of hot drink... and then try to get a nap in somewhere quiet.
"Message me," is her parting remark; she shoulder checks Ellie on the way past, but gently, in a keeping-up-pretenses kind of way. Her little joke.

Thankfully, both she and Abby seem to hit their limits at similar times. She smothers another yawn, doesn't entirely move out of the way of Abby's shoulder in time.
The bump doesn't even feel that rough. Ellie rubs it, turning to stare down the stairs after her.
"... okay," she says, to Abby's retreating back.
