WHO: Samouel Gareth and Anyone
WHAT: Sam celebrates the 16th quietly with a letter from home. Catching up. Work and lessons as usual.

After First Day it had taken a few days for Sam to pull himself out of the weird rut he had fallen into, what with a variety of good and bad things to start off the year; seeing James and the others from Ostwick, finding out that the First Enchanter and Knight-Commander had been killed, Krem having gone off on a mission, playing in the snow with others, etc. After that Sam seemed like his old self, falling into his usual routine of various lessons, magical and otherwise, as well as work. Even so it seemed like around the middle of the month his attitude took a dip again, appearing when he wasn't actively doing anything or paying attention.

[Magic Lessons]
Lessons sure have gotten more interesting since getting back from Emprise du Lion. Sam is even more determined to progress his training in spirit healing, and the other schools of magic. Even so he still has fun with it, learning to chill his hand without freezing it for the most part, or letting the younger mages 'teach' him how to do spells.

[Sparring: Magic or Melee]
For Sam being efficient in both his magic and his physical strength together or separate were important, both himself and anyone else who might be with him on missions. What little he had learned before Emprise du Lion had certainly saved him rear, so he makes a habit in shadow sparring about every day. Anyone is welcome to give him some pointers or ~~kiss his butt~~ challenge him to a spar.

[Armory]
Without any orders, Sam has been spending less time in the armory, though he still goes in some evenings to practice. Anyone looking to have something made or just wanting to talk where it's warm are more than welcome to join or meet up with him here.

[Tavern]
Even though he isn't a big drinker Sam has been enjoying certain drinks now and again at the tavern since he isn't needed at the armory as much. For the most part he spends his time chatting to various members of the Chargers, or just sitting in their general area, listening to their stories. Otherwise he can be found a the bar, the bartender giving him a look every time he decides to just drink tea instead of alcohol.

[Baking with Christine]
Christine had mentioned that she was starting to bake. Curious to how things were going and wanting to be of some support, Sam figures it would be a nice gesture to show up. Maybe offer a hand to help her with whatever is she is planning on making.

Well Sam had agreed on First Day that he would help with potting and moving plants with her. Even so he hadn't been expecting to be grabbed after magic lessons by the Dalish and getting his hands dirty. Not that he's complaining, but it was unexpected.

[~~Birthday~~ The 16th]
The day before Sam let everyone know that he was planning on taking this day off, that nothing was wrong, but just needed a little time. For the most part Sam takes the chance to sleep in, wasting as much of the morning while he can, and coming out once lunch was being served. It's during his meal that he receives a letter that he tears into with a bit of urgency. Halfway through a small smile spreads across his face, though just as sad as it seems happy. The rest of the day he can be found sitting around watching other in the training ring, taking a walk along the battlements or in the tavern drinking, checking out his letter every so often.

Sam sighs again at hearing what they have planned, leaning on the stone wall as well, but letting his head drop between his arms. They couldn't do this in the Circle so it made sense that they'd be trying to pull all the stops now that they were all here and he wasn't dead. "Well let's hope that's all they got planned."

Katniss was twenty one? He hadn't realized she was that much younger than him. "Why didn't you expect to live past twenty? Though I guess congratulations and a happy birthday are in order."

"You never know. There might be a parade." Katniss said solemnly, her mouth twisting around the edges into the amusement. Then her look became a little more serious.

"Poor half-blood, living on her own with her sister to support? Survivor of Redcliffe and the Fifth Blight?" She looked out over Skyhold, "Sam, I should have died when I was ten. Making it this far is a blessing." She smiled softly, "Thank you. I accept your happy returns if you accept mine."

Sam groans at that, shaking his head at the idea of a parade. "Maker I hope not." That he could live without.

The amusement quickly dies down as well though, at seeing Katniss' face and more so with her story. "I didn't know about that. That must have been rough." His own family had left Ferelden when the Blight hit so he couldn't imagine what that was like. "I think I can do that. We've made it another year, yeah?"

"Would they honestly do that?" Katniss arched both eyebrows. "You have... such interesting friends, Sam. For Templars."

"It wasn't easy. But I'm here." After everyone else was gone, she was still here. She hoped that didn't hold true in this life, as it had in her past. She looked up at him, quirking up one corner of her mouth. "One more year down."

"To be quite honest I'm not sure. I don't... think so, but with how excited they seem to be getting about it I wouldn't put it past them. We couldn't celebrate birthdays so spiritedly in the Circle." He chuckles softly at the look, rubbing the back of his head. "Like I've said, my experience with Templars, Mages and the Circle is... unique."

At the smile, Sam lets out a huff, looking out over the wall. "One more year. Hopefully we'll see the end of this war before the next."

"You were not lying." Katniss shook her head a little, "But at least you know they care." Which for a Templar seemed to be a damned miracle.

"One more year." She stopped for a moment, looking down, "... Sam, have you thought about your life? If we make it out of this alive?"

"Have you?" he asks, eyes still looking out towards the horizon before eventually looking back, expression considerate and serious. "I've thought about it. There's... a lot of 'ifs' honestly. Being a mage certainly doesn't help things. A lot of it... depends on Krem really."

She folds her hands in front of her, staring off at those mountains. The mountains that seem so steady, so immovable. As if the world burnt down all around them, those mountains would still be there, waiting for them.

"I have. There has to be a reason why I survived ... when my family has died and I lived. I thought it was to die here but," she swallowed for a moment, "But there's people now."

She looks back at Sam, one corner of her mouth lifting up, "You would be a great Charger."

So her family was- oh. That must have been rough, but as sad as it was, Sam couldn't help but smile just a bit when Katniss mentions that there are people now worth living for.

"How did you know I was planning on becoming a Charger?" Was it obvious or had word been getting around? "Thanks, though that remains to be seen. I still have to go through The Iron Bull."

She didn't like talking about it - honestly - but it was a fact she had to face. Orphaned, alone, except now for Airy. Airy was her family now, as well as Bruce (who would deny it forever). Then all her friends ... and Cullen ...

"I didn't. But if you and Krem stay together, you'd never want to be left behind while he's having all the fun." Katniss shrugged, "Just makes sense you'd join." She thinks on that, before saying quietly, "He'll take you."

Scoffing softly at that with a bit of a smile, Sam shakes his head a bit. That sounded like some decent logic she had there. Katniss definitely had him down.

"Well I am looking to join. But like I said... that's up to Bull. If not... I'll figure something."

She leaned on the ramparts, before nodding her head slowly. "I don't honestly know what I'll do. I mean, I don't think I could go back to being just a hunter, anymore. I don't honestly know what I'll do. But I'll have to figure out something."

Her lips twist a little. "If Bull doesn't take you, we can start our own mercenary band. Everdeen and Gareth, We Get The Job Done."

"Well I don't know how that would solve me staying with Krem, but sure. If Bull doesn't accept me then let's start a mercenary band. Course we might need something a bit more catchy than Everdeen and Gareth." Shaking his head slightly at that, Sam leans over and gives Katniss a bit of a nudge.

"We could follow after the Chargers and take on all the jobs they couldn't. You know, like a clean-up crew." She said with a straight face, before she smirked. "Hey, people come to me to have things shot -- not come up with witty names."

"Well that sounds overly challenging to try and do. We might have to get more people if that's going to work," he says with an equally straight face before smiling. "Well I suck at names too - people come to me when they get shot - so maybe we should find someone who is better at them."

"It's true - we can't fend of all the enemies with just my arrows and your magic." She smiled slowly, before she looked up at him, "... only person I know is Varric and I don't think he's coming with us. So I guess you'd better get into the Chargers, huh?"

"Well I think you know more than just Varric, but that would've just added a lot more arrows." And several other things, but he digressed. "Yeah, guess I better get into the Chargers."

Pausing for a moment, Sam gives Katniss a nudge then nods his head back towards the keep. "Wanna get something to eat?"
