Skimming one such darker patch as he adds, "But from what I gather, we were all asked for a life. The Templars I had in my company were practically competing to throw themselves on the sword."

And it is more out of consideration for Julius than for caution or distrust that Marcus doesn't further that towards a sharp-edged joke.

He can't resist a less glib thought, here, and it leads him to say: "I wonder what would have happened, if any group refused outright. As far as I heard, everyone did offer someone initially."

He supposes it makes sense; almost by definition, nearly everyone in Riftwatch thinks keeping Corypheus at bay is worth dying for. Still, he has to wonder about the nature of the puzzle all the same.
