"The Hearthkeeper, yes." Pel motions for Kallian to come close so she can see her drawing the heraldry of Sylaise. "Sylaise is the vine. Merrick and Beleth have her vallaslin, if you've met them. Merrick's is just over his eye, but Beleth's is more complex. It all depends on preference."

"Yes, I've met Beleth. She was along when we went to Kirkwall," Kallian says. "The pattern is lovely, though."

Lightly, she traced the pattern.
"How do you even decide something like that?"

"You know. Once you've reached a certain age, sometimes you feel the calling of the god who chose you. It was always going to be Mythal for me. I was raised to be Keeper. You might ask my cousin, though--he doesn't believe in any gods and he has vallaslin. He's the one with white hair--Cyril."

"In the cities, all we are taught is Andraste. How she helped the elves and how we should be grateful. But I can't trust the Chantry. For all their love of Andraste, they do not seem to have any interest in carrying on her legacy for people like us," Kallian mused, "If it weren't blasphemy, though, imagine how pretty Andrastian markings would be... Tongues of flame along the cheeks and brow..."

Her ears perked in curiosity to hear of Cyril, though.
"He... doesn't believe in any gods? I've never heard of such a thing. Is that... even allowed?"

"Dalish value freedom above anything. Our people can believe as much or as little as they wish. We don't dictate everybody's thoughts like the Chantry."

Hunger shone in the younger elf's eyes.

"No wonder there were always a handful of elves who tried to leave the alienage. I might have if I had known the way..."
