"About five years with Riftwatch, madame," is Fifi's deferential reply, "one or two of those spent in the personal household of several of its agents, on the mainland. They moved on, and I was offered a position in the Gallows." Straightforward enough; one recommendation leads to another, in her line of work.

[hmmmmm]

"And you serve all who dwell here? Or only those of some high office?"

And esteemed guests, perhaps. Mother Pleasance doesn't claim the title, but she has noted the relative comfort in which she is kept. This is surely not a room meant for some average member of the organization, nor has it been decorated as such.

"Mostly the latter, Madame," Fifi replies easily, "and visitors. Though I'm also certain to assist when more hands are needed elsewhere in the fortress." It's mostly true.

"Has the chamber been to your liking?"

[hmmmmm]

"It's well-appointed. Thankfully not too lavish."

Though the concept of lavish feels incongruous when applied to the Gallows. She hadn't worried overmuch about the possibility.

"What other tasks do you assist with? I assume had you a Seneschal you would take direction from them, but in the absence of one you are guided by your own best judgements?"

"Oh, no, Madame, I report to [NPC who definitely exists in charge of custodial staff], who in turn reports to Commander Flint, of the Forces division." It's only partially a lie, and she presents it without a flicker in her pleasant demeanor.

"Perhaps I misspoke-- I assist when more hands are needed in, for instance, the mopping of floors on a rainy day." A breezy laugh, and, "you are quite unlikely to see me on the battlefield."

[hmmmmm]

"Are you paid for this work?" is an aside, though still of some interest.

The chain of command is noted. Orderly, and clearly delineated.

Of course, not all of their people are bound for the battlefield. This is not truly a surprise. Mother Pleasance has had the pleasure of stepping foot into the Research offices, after all.

The question actually catches Fifi slightly off-guard.

"--of course, Madame," she replies, "all Riftwatch personnel are paid for their work."
