“I’m almost always studying. Occupational hazard,” he volleys back, voice quick and light as ever. (Reining himself in and remembering to stop before his mouth gets him in trouble— well, this is going to be the hard part.) But Strange is stacking the books again, neatly tucking them away into his arms, and he glances down at the last title she’s picked up. He clears his throat, and seems to mentally muster his composure back in order: cloak readjusted, sleeves shaken out, settling all his ruffled feathers as if there’s some internal conscience reminding him be on your best behaviour, Stephen.

By the time he looks up and meets Mother Pleasance’s eye, he’s at least attempted to school his expression into smooth, placid affability. “I’m a rifter,” a glint of green at his palm as he takes the book back, “so I’ve been studying what I can of the local history. I find it wise to understand the place you’re at, after all.”

"It does you credit to devote such attention to your surroundings."

A strange thing to conceptualize, regardless. A spirit, devoted to study.

"Have you been among us long enough to form questions, or are you seeking more broad understandings?"

Oh man, what timing. There’s a memory sparking, of Ellis’ quiet voice beside a fireside in Seattle. “I have so many,” Strange says, honestly. He is always asking questions.

(You’re a man who’s looking at the world through a keyhole, and you spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole. To see more, know more.)

He shifts his weight a little, moving out of the doorway to the Research offices in case others need to pass by, and looks directly at Mother Pleasance. This might be a useless line of inquiry, but the other man had half-recommended siccing him on a nun, and so Strange will do so.

“I’d like to know a little more about Chantry beliefs on death. So I believe I’ve read that the spirits of the dead pass beyond the Veil, into the Fade, to seek and take their place by the side of the Maker.” Props to his self-control, but his lip doesn’t curl in disdain. This is academic curiosity; and more interesting considering there’s some actual literal metaphysical precedent for this.

“What do you think happens if one were to die if their spirit were already visiting the Fade? Have there been any texts written on this? Do you return to your body; or are you unclipped from your body, truly dead now, to wander forever? Ignore the fact that I’m a rifter; I’m simply curious if there have been any recorded histories or theories on this at all.”
