"Hysterectomy aside, they are better than being known as the tall one's crazy girlfriend." Don't worry about it.

Misinterpreting that immediately –

Lazar lifts a hand, reviews his big, shiny wedding ring. The graven eye of a swan glares back.

"Wouldn't say we know each other that well." Pretty enough, bit scrawny. And mages, you know, got to make sure they won't set you on fire for a bad mood. But: "Ain't you forces? Figured that's all field missions."

Hell, that's half scouting (the part he doesn't duck and slack for).

"Sybelle. Dwarven name." It isn't, that's why they picked it. "Who's the tall one?"

"Astrid," she answers without thinking, then rushes to say: "But it wasn't real, is the point. There was a - we went to Minrathous to meet a contact and I improvised a frankly terrible backstory for why I was there."

"Because it's hardly believable," she grouches a little bit. "And because it won't hold water, if we ever have to return. I don't know, I should've gone with an actual plan."

Instead of following an intimidatingly beautiful woman to a city of mages?

If Lazar is trying to tease, Hermione is deliberately ignoring it.

Great, she's choking on the last bit of her breakfast eggs, letting out a laugh. "I'm not that generous with filthy swearing."

But also, should she be? There was a time, back in Akhuras, where battle after battle after battle had left her unable to resist letting out one very heartfelt fuck, and it had been quite cathartic. Should Hermione Granger swear more?

[extortionate]

"So leave off the fuck." He reaches, lifts the toast off her plate. Through a mouthful of crumbs: "But undercover's not you. That's the whole point."
