Had she been alone, perhaps Petrana might have reacted differently — barred the door of her study and urgently called for assistance over her crystal, more than likely — but with Marcus to hand, she emerges from behind that unbarred door with sufficient confidence in his ability to handle whatever this is and, accordingly, willingness to satisfy her own curiosity about that.

The gaze she alights on Julius carries not even a glimmer of recognition, only a quizzically puzzled air as she takes in the pieces that make no sense.

He is taking his boots off.
