"Oh, that right?"

It sounds like the sort of shit one hears, but Barrow doesn't know that he's ever actually born witness to a victim of it. His eyebrows arch, intrigued.
laruetheday: (we'll ask Powerpoint.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-20 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"So he says."

Clarisse sees the look he's giving her, eyebrows raised, and frowns back at him. "Don't look like that."
thereneverwas: (lol)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-20 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
His laugh is sudden, incredulous but delighted.

“Look like what!”

"All like..."

And here Clarisse does an impression of the face Barrow was making, eyebrows arched. Of course she puts way too much emphasis on the intrigue, making it look more like she's mocking him, but she can't maintain the expression for long before she laughs too, despite herself.

"Whatever."
thereneverwas: made by @barometz (hehhh)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-20 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Mocking or not, it’s enough to make Barrow erupt into laughter.

“I don’t look like that!” he insists, but one gets the impression he doesn’t care that much either way— he’s just enjoying the exchange.

“All right, you little shit,” he adds fondly, “go on.”
laruetheday: robins @ insanejournal (by night? i do whatever i want. no job.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"You did," she insists, but she's still smiling. It's nice to laugh about something. Gods know nothing else has seemed funny the past few days.

Go on. Okay.

"Uh, so where I'm from, if you're a demigod, they take you to this special training camp. A lot of the time your godly parent claims you once you get there, but not always. The gods are busy and they have a ton of kids. Sometimes they forget about us. But if your godly parent does claim you, sometimes they might give you quests, or challenges. Or they might never speak to you ever. It's up to them." It's a crapshoot, basically!

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-21 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Well that," Barrow muses, after taking some time to ruminate on it, and furrows his brow as he stalls in his sentence.

"...that sounds bad." Like bad bad. "...you get to choose whether you go or not?"
laruetheday: robins @ insanejournal (by night? i do whatever i want. no job.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"No." Which, okay, does sound bad. "Once we're there, we decided whether we want to live there or whether we want to come back once a year and train, though."
thereneverwas: made by @barometz (hmph)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Barrow’s brow creases further as his frown deepens.

“Well that’s not fair,” he remarks, quietly— she seems very cavalier about it all, so he doesn’t want to step on toes, and yet.
laruetheday: except i still get to kill something. (it's like yoga.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-22 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Life's not fair," Clarisse says, in the tone of someone who's heard nothing but that her whole life. "You can be pissed about it or just do what needs to be done."

A pause as she takes another drink, makes another face. Her tongue feels mostly numb at this point, though, which is nice. "Anyway, I liked living there. I could do what I wanted and I got to train to be a warrior and kill monsters and win feats of strength and shit."
thereneverwas: (chat)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-22 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
"What needs-- you mean what you were made to do," Barrow clarifies, with a smile that's a little bit impish, but sympathetic in its way.

"Sounds like you made the best of it, at least."
laruetheday: (i try never to speak with people.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-23 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Clarisse nods. "I did. I work really fucking hard."

That's why it's so annoying that most of Riftwatch is suspicious of her right now, all that hard work for nothing. She knows it's not just her—that'd be enough to make her seriously believe she'd lost her mind—but it's still a thought that stings every time it resurfaces. Which is often.
thereneverwas: (tender)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Well." He sighs, his smile softening to something gentler-- not pitying, of course, but perhaps commiserating.

"People don't see that, always. They'll take it for granted your whole life, but." He shrugs idly. "'Long as you're doing it for yourself. Still shit to be forgotten, but at least you did something you're proud of."
laruetheday: waste of a good hatchet. (bury the hatchet?)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-01-28 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. That's true."

Clarisse sighs, but it's less aggravated now. She gives Barrow a sidelong look. "What about you, old man? You proud of yourself?"

Too familiar, considering he doesn't know her anymore? Nah, he can deal with it.
thereneverwas: made by @barometz (haha fuck this)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-01-29 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Old man," he repeats in a grumble, but Barrow isn't too offended to answer. He tosses back what remains of his current whiskey-- what number is he on? Doesn't matter-- "yeah, sure. These days. Could call it something like that."
laruetheday: it stinks like trees! (we hate camp.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-02-12 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Clarisse looks at him for a few moments, debating whether or not to ask. But then she figures it can't hurt. It's not like she's asking him to talk about anything shitty. It's kind of personal, sure, but not like... bad.

"What are you the most proud of?"
thereneverwas: made by @barometz (scoff)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-02-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
He laughs, perhaps a bit defensively, but opts against his nature to take the question in good faith; the conversation's been honest enough. Might as well.

"...the training yard," he decides, after some consideration, "keeping it nice, clean. Welcome. ...safe, I guess."
laruetheday: to be fair, i did. (imagine that.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-02-13 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's my favorite place in the Gallows." No sarcasm to be found. It's a good place to hang out. "I go there almost every day."

Assuming she's not away or being followed by someone who thinks she's a spy.
thereneverwas: made by @barometz (whoa wha)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-02-13 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Barrow visibly brightens, caught off-guard by the sincerity. He may have had no clue this person existed until an hour ago, but she likes his training yard, and that means something.

"Really?"
laruetheday: ... maybe the whole suburb. (the best in the whole school...)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-02-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, really." Clarisse swirls her glass, watching the whiskey slosh up against the sides. "It feels like home to me."
thereneverwas: (chat)

[personal profile] thereneverwas 2025-02-18 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a pause as Barrow processes what he's just been told, in which his expression gets dangerously Mushy; he's not the crying type, but he is visibly deeply touched by this revelation.

"Well," he says, clearing his throat, "we're keeping you."
laruetheday: it's like, we get it. (every jazz song is like 40 minutes long.)

[personal profile] laruetheday 2025-02-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ew, don't look visibly touched! Clarisse is going to be pretending she does not see it, thanks.

"Good, because I'm planning on sticking around."
