Into the DANGER ZONE

WHO: All Rifters + the 7 natives who signed up
WHAT: Searching the ruins of Haven for survivors, an Inquisition crew finds something strange. And demons. It's kind of scary that the demons aren't the strange thing.
WHEN: Third week of Harvestmere, 9:41
WHERE: Haven
NOTES: We've broken rifters and rescuers (or "rescuers") into two groups. This log has an arrival comment for each group--you can start smaller subthreads beneath those rather than try to have an eight- or nine-person log, just incorporate surrounding chaos/fighting--and a third top-level set for the whole group's journey back to Skyhold

You were asleep-- deeply or fitfully, for the last time or just resting your eyes for a moment-- and then you were not. And wherever you were was not, anymore, replaced by nothing but the sensation of falling, tumbling into endless, bottomless nothing. If this were still a dream, you would wake before you hit the ground. You can't die in a dream, they say. In some worlds.

But there's no waking here, just a flare of green-white light and a jarring impact, barely softened by snow that lies a foot deep with an icy crust that cracks beneath the force of your landing. The wind is biting cold, the sun is bright, and you are not alone. Others thud to the ground nearby, as bewildered as you, and others run up who look no less confused for having their feet beneath them.

You are also not as you were: in the palm of your left hand there glows a narrow splinter of light the same sickly green as whatever brought you here. It aches, a bone-deep pain that gnaws even through all the distractions. Like that you're being attacked by monsters, some tall, spindly stick-things with too many eyes, some hunched and hooded with no eyes at all.

Welcome to Thedas!

A moment before he'd been scavenging what he could from his last former 'home' of Haven. A few torn magical notes here, some preserved elf root there. But all the treasures he'd managed to recover were forgotten in an instant, dropped to the ground at his feet at the same moment it felt like a chunk of ice had dropped into his stomach, terror tightening his throat as it all started to happen again. Demons and monsters in Haven, with far too few people near him to actually do anything about it. It's a weak magical barrier, but he throws it up anyway as he clutches his staff with both hands. Demons. Possession and horror and-

And then there was a person. A normal human looking person, stuck down there with the demons. While he doesn't run forward, he does at least shout as he throws another barrier to surround the poor bastard that had (clearly) been in the wrong place and gotten stuck in this mess.

"R-ru- Get out of there!"

An arrow slammed into the Shade that had been barrelling towards Peter while he wasn't paying attention - exploding on impact into bright, flaming shards, and making the creature scream out with rage.

It gave Gavin the thirty seconds he needed - leaping down to put himself between Peter, the rift, and the demons, in a rather ungraceful tumble. He landed with one knee into the dirt and the other up - pulling his bow string back to fire an arrow straight into the flaming demon.

"I've got you, Peter! Please tell me you know how to light things on fire!"

"I- ye- sometimes!"

It was very hard to think with everything happening around him, but explosions Peter could cause. Usually accidentally, when trying to cast a healing spell or proper ward. But fires still happened. If he could just- Yes.

It wasn't a fireball in traditional form. But it was a general spray of flame that mostly went towards the demon (and took out the things Peter had managed to scrounge, as well). And, incidentally, towards Gavin.

"Roll, roll!"

"Roll, roll!" In any other context might earn him a snarky reply, but as Gavin suddenly found himself engulfed in flame, it actually came across as very wise, timely advice. Gavin hit the ground, tumbling off to the side, just missing slamming into a very angry, and very on fire, shade demon.

He managed to stumble back to his feet, running back toward Peter to get behind him, where there was less chance of, you know, burning alive.

"Maybe let's keep the fire to the demons!" He yelled over the battle as he drew, notched and released an arrow from just over Peter's shoulder.

"You were in between!"

Totally not his fault, that. But now that Gavin is behind him, Peter suddenly finds himself closer to a flaming, angry shade. A few months ago he'd been reading in a tower. Now he was going to be murdered by a flaming demon. Life really was not going in a positive direction for Peter at the moment. He takes the second needed to strength his barriers and add one to Gavin, more than a little concerned they were both about to get run over by the angry, flaming creature.

The barrier was very, very welcome, especially since that demon was quite literally barrelling towards them. As soon at the barrier was up, Gavin grabbed Peter's arm and then threw himself down to the ground, dragging Peter with him as the demon clawed through the air right where they had been a second ago.

He hit the ground hard, but since he'd done it on purpose, it hadn't winded him, and he was already pulling an arrow free to shoot from his new, lateral, position.

The demon screamed with anger as the arrow embedded slammed into it, exploding with enough force to send the demon to the ground a few feet away, and give Gavin a chance to get back to his feet, dragging Peter up with him.

Peter is more than willing to keep the barriers coming and be moved around like a rag doll. If he had a full moment to take in the situation, he'd probably be making a rapid escape towards a more defensible area- such as a hole in the wall only a rat could fit in. But as this is a group affair, he'll leave the offense to the elf and keep the defense up as best he can while being pulled towards safety.

"T-there's people down there- new people. Did you see?"

"I saw," Gavin replied, trying to focus on killing the shit out of the demon before it got back up and killed them - but luckily, the next arrow he launched was the last one required, and with a scream it tore up into shreds of the Fade and disappeared. Gavin let out a breath and got back to his feet, pulling Peter up with him.

"They - they came right out of the rift. You'd know better than me - are they demons?"

Peter's gaze snaps to Gavin, a protest that no, guys, really he didn't associate with demons right on his lips- and, oh. No. Just the mage thing in general. Right. The brass ring demons where eternally reaching for. And he swallowed it down and shook his head.

"They don't normally- usually demons looking human is more a one on one thing, I think. Look how you want them to look so you'll do what they want. Someone desired....unless they've, er, possessed a corpse or something."

Which...maybe? Peter looks at Gavin with a helpless shrug.

"I'm just an apprentice."

"Well they don't look like corpses, at least," Gavin said. That was good. He tried to imagine corpses shuffling towards him, and--

And decided he really did not want to imagine that.

"We should probably help the others," he said looking back. "Creators, but this was supposed to be an easy afternoon's guard duty--"
