[Adelaide: Here There Be Spirits]

For years he had been training for this, but it was under Adelaide's care and guidance that he finally felt like he was getting closer to the end. It was clear that he was nearing the end, too, what with so many of his peers and mentors bringing it up, saying that he was ready, and encouraging him. Even so it was not something he wanted to rush - he had time. With how things had gone the past month though it was obvious that he could not put it off much longer. Rifts in Skyhold. Red templars and demons in Emprise du Lion. Ishmael. He had fared well with it all, but things were not going to get easier, and for that he needed to be ready.

He was ready.

He was nervous.

Even if he had trained for it, and felt like he could handle it, there was still that odd lump in his stomach as he waited in the garden for Adelaide - having shown up early himself to get his head right. Burns, Anamaria and Murtogg would be showing up soon as well. Regardless of how much he worked for this there was still always that chance- It was always smart to have a safety. Other mages had been suggested, but these Templars had been with him during his Harrowing. He trusted them. And perhaps trying to be a middle ground for the two groups to actually work together.

{Before}
Sam has decided to go through the final test in his Spirit Healer training, and getting his spirit. The days leading up to when he plans on going through with it are the same as always though Sam seems rather nervous.

Surprise! Abomination attack!
After successfully gaining a spirit partner Sam seems to be back to his usual self, though at times he does seem to be a bit distracted. Getting used to the change he won't be at his lessons like usual, but he can still be found roaming around.

"Yeah, pretty much that," he chuckles lightly at that, leaning back in his chair as well. "Very good reason though I doubt you'll need to see it. You've got your fancy spirit blade and all that now right?"

"Yes. Yes, I do. And those barriers last a lot longer, too, but you never know. What we faced in Emprise du Lion definitely put those skills to the test, and I didn't always walk away unscathed. That dragon put up a hell of a fight, spirit blade or no spirit blade." But she's very fond of the item Sam helped craft and she fondly glances down to its resting place at her hip.

"Hm. I wonder how long we can make those barriers last if me and Fortitude help you out with them." That would certainly be interesting to try, and Sam smiles a bit broader as he senses some approval at the idea of better protection to face down a foe.

"Wait did you say dragon? You were there to fight them?" A moment then a grin. "How jealous is Kain?"

"He is, unless he's secretly mad that he didn't get to fight all the dragons. We were on different teams, each facing a different one. I had Cassandra, Merrick and Jamie with me. A pretty good combination, as it turns out." And she got to see Cassandra in action up close, which was gratifying since she'd heard so many good things about the Seeker and her skill on the battlefield.

Korrin then thinks over his idea and perks up, nodding in approval. "That's definitely an idea worth investigating. I say we try it, preferably before we're sent off to scout a new location."

"That does sound like a decent group. Merrick wasn't in risk of drowning or anything else besides getting eaten this time around I hope?" Honestly he was a bit surprised the elf had been with it enough to even come to Emprise in the first place, what with being poisoned earlier that month.

"Oh definitely before that. Maybe once Fortitude and I have had some time to practice we'll test it out. You'll be the scariest thing to fight out there if that works out."

[gatheringstorm]

"Merrick...you'd never know anything happened to him, the way he fought." Korrin just shakes her head, amazed. "He's damn resilient, or extremely lucky or both. I can't honestly tell you which. Either way, he was a great help out there on the battlefield."

She pauses to take another sip, then chuckles. "Don't lay it on too thick, it wouldn't be good for me to become overconfident out there. Take what time you need, and then let me know."

"I know what you mean. As soon as he was up he was back to glaring at me and everything. I'm glad he's better and bounced back so quickly though."

He goes to take another sip as well, pausing just before his lips touch the mug, eyes shifting to the side as if listening to something. After a moment Sam shakes his head with some amusement. "Fortitude appreciates that you recognize not becoming too overconfident and doing something reckless."

Korrin pauses in her drinking to watch Sam when she's distracted. That response gets a small grin out of her. "I haven't lived this long as a mercenary without gaining some common sense, you know. If I was as hot-headed as you'd think all the time, I'd be in some unmarked grave by now.

So...what's it like when Fortitude talks to you? Do you hear literal words or is it more a gut feeling, or...?"

Sam grins widely at that, setting his mug down for a moment. "Well I know you can be hot-headed, but I don't think it's all the time. I know you're smarter than that. We had to make some rough decisions back in Emprise because we had to keep our heads remember? I'm just repeating what Fortitude said."

How did Fortitude talk? That was actually a pretty interesting question and for a moment Sam has to stop and think about that. "It isn't actual words per se. It's more of a feeling that I can understand."

She nods slowly, trying to comprehend what that must be like, but spirit dealings are very much outside the realm of her current experience. "As long as it works for you two, right? It's probably more efficient, anyway." Words can often get in the way of true communication. Maker knows she's stumbled over her own, especially when younger and more awkward.

"So what does Krem think of all this?" There's a sidelong glance from her at that, as she hasn't spent much time with the Charger's second since his return. Most of that's simply due to being in different places out of necessity...but not all of it.

"It works, but miscommunication is bound to happen. There are many things It doesn't get or understand yet since it never had interest in our world before now."

At the mention of Krem and the way Korrin looks at him, Sam pauses yet again, raising a brow and taking a long sip from his drink. "I haven't really talked to him about it yet." Or Bull now that he thinks about it. That was going to be interesting.

"You two doing okay?"

"Well, now's a good time for you to get used to each other, before everything goes to hell...again. Because you know it will."

That's their life, after all. At that question, Korrin shrugs and stares down at the table. "No idea. We haven't really talked since he returned and everything became tense because of him wanting me to be okay about the Iron Bull. That's never going to happen, Sam. I'll be civil because the Inquisition allows him here, but I'm never going to be comfortable with someone whose culture views mages as 'dangerous things'. There's just no way around that."

"Sounds like you also described most of human culture," he comments with a sad, but amused smile. He knows what Korrin is trying to say, but he still has to point it out.

"I know you and Krem are close so I can see why it's an issue. Bull is someone he looks up to and is here because of him so of course he wants you two to get along. It's tough for him that people he likes can't get along... but you have good reasons for being uncomfortable, and you shouldn't be forced into it." He plenty of this issue with the other mages and some of the templars that he got it.

"Uou and Krem can still be friends though? Can't agree on everything right?" He smiles lightly at that, tilting his head ever so slightly. "I mean the two of us get along just fine."

"That's what I'd like to think; if he just realizes that it's not an issue I'm going to budge on, we'll be fine. Hell, if Bull went Tal-Vashoth I'd have no problem at all, but I have other things to do than sit around and wait for something that might not happen." Korrin tilts her head, peering at Sam curiously. She'd never asked him about his thoughts on all that. "Does it bother you, though? You're the one dating his lieutenant, after all."

"Krem is a worrier and tends to overthink things, even if he doesn't realize it or wants to admit it. Just give him time to think about it and then talk about it calmly. That's what I've learned." He's learned that lesson all too well; first after the wake and then during the Mire.

"Does what bother me? That Bull probably sees me as dangerous?"

Korrin nods. "Not that mages aren't dangerous, but a culture that doesn't even treat us as people is a step beyond that. He may be working with the Inquisition but at the end of the day, he's still a Qunari. And the fact that you're a Spirit Healer now probably doesn't help. They tend to lump spirits with demons, as far as I'm aware."

"A lot of people lump them together to be fair." He sighs, taking another sip of his tea, sliding down in the chair a bit. "Not particularly. So long as he isn't trying to kill me I can deal with it. I suppose the only thing that would bother me is if he tried splitting me and Krem up, and maybe that ending up becoming a reason why he wouldn't let me join the Chargers."

Sipping her cider, Korrin relaxes a little. Sam can definitely handle himself, but she's glad Bull hasn't been tougher on him in this regard. At least yet; the Spirit Healer issue still has her wary. "Eh, if he didn't, the Valo-Kas would totally take you in. Horns or not, healers are worth their weight in gold. We don't give a fuck if they talk to spirits to do it."

Her lips curve into a small smile at that, trying to encourage one out of him.

It was definitely a conversation he needed to have with Bull. He didn't regret finishing his training, but if it did hurt his chances... He would also need to have a conversation with Krem about things and some possibilities.

At Korrin's offer he does smile, eyes turning up from his mug to look at her more fully. "I appreciate the offer. If it doesn't work out I'd gladly come join your company, Korrin. I'm going to need to do something when all of this ends."

"I'm already trying to adopt Kas and Taashath into it, why not more? We'll need to replenish our numbers after what happened at the Conclave, anyway. I'd rather do it with people I trust, and Shokrakar trusts in me." Korrin may not agree with everything her leader says and does, but they're almost always on the same wavelength when it comes to character assessment. She's sure the Tal-Vashoth woman would approve of Sam, no question.

"And what do Kas and Taashath have to say about it?" He enjoys being around Kas. It had taken a little bit of effort to get the scout to open up to him, but since then they got along. Taas he's only really been around the once, and while friendly it didn't seem he was the most fond of magic.

"Do you have many humans or other races within the company?" Not that he really cares, but knowing is a bit important.

"Kas definitely likes the idea; I think he misses having a large group of Vashoth around. It's not like we're numerous in Skyhold. Taas...I'm not sure he thinks I'm serious about it, but I am. It'll come up again." She smiles at that, knowing they shouldn't make any solid plans for afterward as it is, but...it's nice to dream about what might be.

"No, not permanently. We've teamed up with other mercenary groups before and some have joined ours on an as-needed basis. But one of the things I was talking about with Shokrakar before coming here was that it might help us to expand beyond that. If we're going to pride ourselves on being ready for anything, then diversifying could only help with that."

Of course it wasn't a solid plan just yet - there were too many ifs and buts to do so. Even so he wanted to have some idea of what he might be doing in the future. Would there we an Inquisition afterward? What would the next Divine decide? Where were him and Krem going to be later on? Even if he didn't look it these things did weigh on him.

"Ah, so if it happens at the moment I'd be the only human member?" He's grinning, raising a brow at the idea. "Would I get called 'short stuff' then?"

Korrin leans back and chuckles. "Knowing them, probably. Nevermind that you're one of the taller humans I've met. But if that starts to get old, all you have to do is remind them that only dumbasses piss off the group healer. They'll take the hint.

Besides...you might not be the only human there. There's at least one other I'd want with me, and she's far shorter than you."

"Taller perhaps, but I'm a good foot shorter then all of you. Except Kas, but he's still growing." Being around Korrin and the other two certainly made him realize how some other people felt around him.

"Oh really?" Another human she said? "That wouldn't happen to be a certain Rifter would it?"
