Library
Though the curly-haired rifter has become a staple in the library over the past six months, Hermione has been relatively scarce there lately. She has no real heart for research anymore, not after the things she'd uncovered in those journals in that cave in Fromage, and there's so much more to Thedas than what can be found in books. She'd learned that the hard way, and now instead of reading and taking notes, she finds her thoughts wandering as they rarely do. For once, she can use a distraction from her failed attempts at studying.
Stables
Avoiding people isn't always as easy as she'd like it to be. But if she can preoccupy herself with animals, Hermione can withstand a bit of small talk. There's usually a kitten or two playing around the stables, and if not, at least helping to feed some of the horses will make her feel productive as well as distracted. And if that doesn't work, there's a certain dracolisk that she'd been slowly learning to get friendly with, assuming it won't sense her dour mood and become agitated.
Battlements
The battlements are actually quite pretty. She'd never really come up here before - if she wasn't in the library then that usually means she wanted to be social, and so the courtyards were where she'd spent more of her time - but now that she's looking for a change of scenery... well, there are worse places to get some quiet with a beautiful view. She's not always alone, since there are always people passing back and forth, but most people don't seem all that keen on hassling the young woman perched in between two turrets, staring out into the mountains. Indeed, unless someone happens to recognize her or just manages to catch her as she wipes at a stray tear, most probably wouldn't even know she's there.
Healing Tents
Returning from Emprise had been difficult, for more reasons than one. Beyond the obvious, Hermione still had a few physical injuries that she'd intended to ask the healers in her group to help with on their way back, but had clearly never gotten around to it due to the extenuating circumstances. Of course, she can't indefinitely deal with waking up with a sharp pain in her back and some of the bruises had begun to look particularly gruesome, so there's nothing wrong with making the occasional visit to the healing tents. If she takes care of one thing at a time and sees a different healer each time, it minimizes the chance of any awkward questions being asked, which is all the better; she's not ready to talk about that dreadful day and is in no rush to change that.
Wildcard!
She probably won't be quite so cheery until later on in the month, but Hermione still needs to eat, drink, bathe, and presumably sleep. She may be a little awkward around those that had gone to Emprise du Lion with her, but she isn't about to actively ignore anyone or send them off. Her nerves might be a bit frayed, but there's still such a thing as etiquette, after all.
Library
Which was why he saw where the girl was sitting and he leaned over her in all his seven foot muscled glory to catch her attention (which he felt shouldn't be hard since he really was enormous), a huge smile on his face as he pointed to the seat near her. "Ah, girl. Might I sit with you? You seem to have space even for a man so large as I."
He gave a soft laugh then tilted his head. Really in that armor he didn't look like he would be one to sit and read yet there he was.

He seems oddly good-natured regardless of who or what he might be, and Hermione finds herself hoping he isn't the garrulous type. She doesn't usually mind a bit of discussion even when she can focus enough to read, but she's just not sure that she can keep up a proper amount of chit-chat, if that's his aim.
Shifting to move some of her papers aside and streamline the small pile of books on demon possession around her, she clears her throat and tries to offer him a small smile as she tells him, "It's fine. Sorry to be so spread out; there usually isn't much competition for table space."

Sitting down, he didn't seem to be bothered by the notes all over at all. Really he just focused upon her instead. "I have great admiration of scholars like yourself. My tutor, Aristotle, once said 'It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.' I have always found this to be fascinating. So I thought perhaps since you had a look of distraction upon your face we might discuss the topic you read of."
He waved to the books around her. It was easy enough to see what they were about if one was familiar enough with the topic.
"I can speak only of my world rather than this one but I know something about possession and magic at least."
no subject
"... Aristotle," she murmured, having at first thought it was simply a classical name. But then she heard the familiar quote, and she frowned a little as she asked, "You mean the philosopher?" She couldn't help sounding skeptical, despite all the other bizarre things she'd heard during her time in Thedas.
Between that and his mention of his world, Hermione could only come to one conclusion, one that made her feel slightly better about his presence. "You're a rifter, then?"
no subject
He laughed softly, the smile lingering on his lips after. Though a naturally loud person, he was keeping his voice quieter to respect the room of knowledge they were in.
"You may call me Iskandar. Might I have your name, my friend?"
no subject
"You... don't exactly match the physical description of the Alexander the Great I'm familiar with," she pointed out delicately. All else aside, she would have remembered if there had been any mention made of Alexander the Great being a vibrant ginger. And possibly a half-giant.
"I'm Hermione Granger. Are you new here, Iskandar?"
no subject
Rather than explain how he'd read his own history books, he moved onto her question. Mostly because he forgot that he should explain honestly.
"I am new. If you are familiar with myself does this mean you are English?" Perhaps he should remember to explain how he knows these things...
no subject
"I am, yes, but... I'm sorry, how do you know this? Wasn't Britain known as Albion in your time? And how could you have read history books with your own name in them?"
no subject
Iskandar paused a moment there and stroked his chin in thought as he figured out where to begin. Probably best to go from the beginning. Or the end rather. "When I died many years ago the power of the Holy Grail accepted my accomplishments in life and deemed me a Heroic Spirit. During appropriate times a mage might have the chance to summon me to a war between mages to gain the chance to have the heart's truest wish granted by the Holy Grail. I was summoned during one of these wars by a boy named Waver Velvet. He is English like yourself but he called upon me in Japan. Being able to walk in a modern era allowed me the chance to read of my histories while being a Heroic Spirit infuses me with knowledge that allows me to blend into the world more easily should I wish to do so."
It was probably more complicated than that but that was a decent enough explanation. "I apologize for having confused you in this. I should have likely explained this earlier. After all, it is part of why I am aware of matters concerning possession. Something I have not done myself but something I know is possible of my kind."
no subject
Which wasn't to say that she wasn't willing to entertain it, given all of the other oddities she'd come to face here. But she wasn't about to leave it all unquestioned.
"So you're a... ghost? Or are you more akin to the spirits of Thedas, in that you embody a particular trait and can possess people? Or... both?" Of those three options, only the first tended to be generally acceptable for Hermione. She wasn't a fan of possession, much less possession by a spirit who used to be alive, but ghosts? She'd gone to school with several of them and even attended one of their deathday parties. She could handle ghosts.

He waved his hand as if to say he didn't really understand that much about that part yet. He was still coming to know how his body worked in this new land. Already it had messed with his abilities and he found himself requiring food, drink, and rest as he had when he was alive. An odd thing really.
"I personally am not one for possessions myself, even if spirit and person have both consented to this arrangement. It is a messy thing for both." He gave a pause then continued. "I would say I am more a soul that requires magic to have physical form. However, unlike humans who can renew their energy that is not something I can so easily do. Which is why a contract with a mage can help me with that."
He gave a soft laugh. "Though it seems that I have different limitations here because my body seems to crave food and drink and rest as it once did years ago."
no subject
But since he didn't seem to pose any immediate threat, she wasn't going to begrudge him a conversation, even if she hadn't really been in the mood for one. At least talking to someone so different from everyone else she knew here in Thedas would help take her mind of her recent troubles.
"I've heard the shards we bear sometimes referred to as an anchor," she revealed. "Perhaps something about the raw magic in your shard is making you more mortal, the same way mine is interfering with my magic. I'd recommend you not purposely sustain any grievous injuries to test that theory, though."
no subject
Oh but she was clearly trying to give him a decent warning. He should probably listen to that. "Never fear. I am not so easily taken down and I have no plans for injury. There is a battle I must return to in my world and I must make sure I am in a similar enough state to handle it."
Which was saying something since he knew he would be killed the moment he returned to his world. In this fight against Archer, Iskandar knew he'd met his match. Perhaps if he'd had a stronger Master but no. He wouldn't trade that boy for anyone in the war. Still, the look in his eyes and the sadness to his smile said enough even without him confessing immediately about this knowledge.
"Until then it seems my purpose is to aid this land. Which means I must learn what I can to be beneficial to the people here."
no subject
"I'm a witch. Technically. Though I suppose it depends on which world's technicalities we're living by. In my world I'm called a witch, but here I qualify as a mage, so I'll go with either. I'm in my last year of studies - ... or I would be, if I were home."
She's seen enough people who thought themselves indestructible wave off a warning, and while that's not exactly what he does, Hermione still feels the need to remark, "No one has plans for injury. But it happens more often than not, especially here. Believe me." She's still recovering from a few - not all of them visible - from her last mission.
"It's good that you want to help, but Thedas-... some parts of it might just be beyond help, in some ways. The system has been broken for far too long."
no subject
Iskandar noted a heaviness to her next words that pulled him away from his thoughts. The smile faded as he observed her. She'd been through pain recently if he could wager a guess. Likely the thing that had led to her feeling so distracted when he'd approached her in the first place.
"Mmm. No system is perfect but people manage as they can while they look for someone with the strength to bring change. Many times because they don't realize the power they have themselves." He knew that in his lifetime he'd been the force of change but that didn't mean he didn't acknowledge the power a people had. Even those long since broken could do much.
"Might I ask what it is you would wish to see changed?"
no subject
The status quo of Thedas with regards to its treatment of anyone who isn't a non-magical human, though? She's not really about to become comfortable with that anytime soon.
"Relations between humans and the rest of the world can generally stand to be improved," she notes carefully. "Skyhold is largely accepting, from what I've found, but I've seen some rather... unfortunate behavior towards elves, Qunari, mages - human or otherwise - ... and rifters like us. The history is tense and complicated, and I understand that, but they can certainly stand to move past their history and put a bit more focus into their future."
no subject
Iskandar wondered what had caused all this strife over the years. People from other lands made sense since they would be the true unknown variable in all of this. There was no telling if they could be trusted or not when there was no history to fall back on. He would have to see if this library had any of the histories on that for him to read.
"I can understand why moving past a history can be difficult but you are correct. Dwelling on the past rather than looking toward a future benefits no one. Progress cannot be mad if one only walks backward. You are very wise, Hermione Granger. I feel as if you have seen much but you have grown throw it rather than letting it tear you down. I greatly admire that in a person."
no subject
At least, until things get so dire that a Mage-Templar War breaks out, apparently.
She still isn't used to someone being blunt and straightforward about matters such as feelings of admiration, especially not so soon after meeting a person, but Hermione's going to simply assume that's part of who Iskandar is and try to get past that. "Thank you. I... have a little more experience than I really care to, all things considered, but not quite enough to get most people to honor my viewpoints. Or, at least, I don't have the clout necessary to make it so my experience can make any real difference. I don't know if any rifters will have have that sort of sway here, unless we're... here to stay."
It's not the first time she's considered that, but that doesn't make it any easier to actually think about.
no subject
He had no proof of that, of course. This was just a feeling deep down within his gut. This had never failed before so he was not about to ignore it now. Iskandar was a man just bound by his heart and instinct with no intention to change that about himself, of course.
But what he really saw here was a young woman who wanted to do good but seemed to worry she might not be able to because of the role she'd been assigned in this place. It was unfortunate because she was intelligent and youthful. Not only that but her heart was true and there was a strength to her which he admired a great deal. It was not often that one so young could be so wise and strong.
So he reached out to rest his hand on her shoulder, his grip warm and caring as he offered her a gentle smile.
"Just continue forward, my friend. Perhaps it is not this day that you will have clout but the future is a mystery to us all. Your experience cannot always be ignored and I look forward to the day when you are able to show us the great power you have which is just waiting to be unleashed. After all, a wonderful mind is one of the greatest tools a person could have."
no subject
But it wouldn't do to tell Iskandar that. He's new here, and there's no sense in quashing his curiosity of the place with her pessimism. Besides, there are rifters who'd been here longer than her six months, and natives who'd been here longer still. Thedas might not be ideal, but it can certainly be worse.
Of course, it often gets worse, but that's not something she wants to think about, either.
She does find herself thinking about this strange, overly positive man, however, and how he can go on and on about someone he's only just met. "I agree on that last bit, but I think you might just give me too much credit," she replies. It's not so much humility that makes her say it as it is that she's simply been through enough to make her question her skills and usefulness, but that doesn't bear saying at the moment.
"Thedas is still new to me, and I'm discovering more things about it every day. Rather than clarify anything, it just makes it a little harder for me to cope. I'm not used to harshness of life here, and part of me hopes I never get acclimated to it."
no subject
"In our lives we all must face hardships of some kind. There are some we are better equipped to handle than others. I have seen my own fair share of them."
The large man smiled as he set the book down again. "I hope as well that you never become acclimated to it. If you do then I fear for what that will mean for your heart. One who is not acclimated to such things can recognize what you do in order to do what you can to help. Perhaps it wounds us but at least we might recognize something others might miss."
no subject
"Now it's just a matter of whether or not anyone would listen to any revelations we might happen to make," she murmurs. "Easier said than done, I'm afraid. Not everyone has the most positive sentiments towards people like us."
cw: descriptions of brutal child deaths
"Not that long ago the boy I was with rode with me to an underground chamber. We hoped to confront the enemy there for magic had been used there not long ago. Powerful magic. As we moved further in it grew darker and I realized quickly what we had come across, what the wheels of my chariot ran over and the hooves of my bulls crushed. The boy was naive, not so used to the cruelties of the world to see it yet."
Iskandar sighed but didn't stop there. "I told him not to look but he lit a light and all around us was a sea of blood and parts of bodies. Torn apart and left on the floor like garbage if they did not fit the filthy sculptures the rest were created from. Masterpieces of darkness for an insane mind. But what made the matter worse was that these bodies were of children. Dozens of them or perhaps moving toward a hundred. It was brutal and cruel and the boy was distressed as anyone should be."
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes a moment. "Even thinking of it now I am filled with the anger I felt then. Raw and hot. To do such things to those so innocent..." There was a pause before he spoke again. "There were a few other Spirits like myself who joined together against this madness. Through the darkness hope marched forth and I watched enemies become allies against a common enemy. Together we fought with all of our strength to pin a great beast brought on by the monster who aided in the deaths of those children and a girl raised her sword high to obliterate the beast and thus that madness was put to an end."
He'd spoken a great deal there but he only smiled afterward. "I have seen the worst of people and the best of them. After seeing the best I know that the worst will not win. Nor will it here so long as we have the will to march forward through the shadows. But if our faith wavers?" He rested a large hand on her shoulder as his smile turned into a grin. "Then you have companions to walk with you and remind you that you are not alone."
no subject
Hermione couldn't breathe for a few moments, suffocated by pure disgust. What she'd seen the Inquisition do had been a matter of necessity, or at least it could be argued as such. But what Iskandar was describing-... there were no words in any language she knew of that could describe the injustice of it all.
Remembering about someone in Thedas who'd only recently fought off a corrupted spirit of Justice, she scrambled to get back onto something resembling neutral ground, not wanting to make herself susceptible to any emotion so strong that it would attract anything from across the Fade. It was hard to focus on what was being said after that, but the weight of Iskandar's hand on her shoulder was at least a little grounding, even if she found it hard to believe in his optimism. How can she believe in it, when the companions she'd been with had been the ones who'd done something so terrible?
"Life isn't always as simple as seeing the best and the worst of people," she murmured after a moment. "Sometimes, a single person can embody both of those extremes." She thought again of Anders, of the fact that she liked and respected him despite the fact that he was an admitted terrorist. What kind of world can Thedas be if she counted him among her closest friends here?
"But... I'd like to say you're right. It's just very hard to see that sort of thing when you're in the thick of it. I'm sorry your friend had to see that. And you, too. I-... I've seen too many people die needlessly, and far too many of them had been children. It doesn't get easier."
no subject
"The boy is stronger than he will ever know. He will grow into a fine man if he continues on as he is. For he has the same pain to such things as you do. It is the day that you find that such things do not hurt you that you are truly no longer one with a soul. Though it might seem terrible to say this, Hermione Granger, never let yourself get used to it and never let it get easier."
Iskandar gave her shoulder the gentlest of squeezes. Though he was huge he clearly knew how to keep that in check so he wouldn't harm those so much smaller than himself. "Until then I am willing to listen if you need an ear. We have just met but that will not stop me from extending the hand of friendship toward you."
