[OPEN] Heaven bend to take my hand

WHO: Hermione Granger and YOU
WHAT: Hermione's seen some shit and is trying to get over it.
WHEN: Mid-Kingsway through the end of the month.
WHERE: In and around Skyhold.
NOTES: Takes place after this plot, so some threads will likely have mentions of child death and/or signs of depression. Please let me know if you'd like me to avoid any triggery topics.

Library

Though the curly-haired rifter has become a staple in the library over the past six months, Hermione has been relatively scarce there lately. She has no real heart for research anymore, not after the things she'd uncovered in those journals in that cave in Fromage, and there's so much more to Thedas than what can be found in books. She'd learned that the hard way, and now instead of reading and taking notes, she finds her thoughts wandering as they rarely do. For once, she can use a distraction from her failed attempts at studying.

Stables

Avoiding people isn't always as easy as she'd like it to be. But if she can preoccupy herself with animals, Hermione can withstand a bit of small talk. There's usually a kitten or two playing around the stables, and if not, at least helping to feed some of the horses will make her feel productive as well as distracted. And if that doesn't work, there's a certain dracolisk that she'd been slowly learning to get friendly with, assuming it won't sense her dour mood and become agitated.

Battlements

The battlements are actually quite pretty. She'd never really come up here before - if she wasn't in the library then that usually means she wanted to be social, and so the courtyards were where she'd spent more of her time - but now that she's looking for a change of scenery... well, there are worse places to get some quiet with a beautiful view. She's not always alone, since there are always people passing back and forth, but most people don't seem all that keen on hassling the young woman perched in between two turrets, staring out into the mountains. Indeed, unless someone happens to recognize her or just manages to catch her as she wipes at a stray tear, most probably wouldn't even know she's there.

Healing Tents

Returning from Emprise had been difficult, for more reasons than one. Beyond the obvious, Hermione still had a few physical injuries that she'd intended to ask the healers in her group to help with on their way back, but had clearly never gotten around to it due to the extenuating circumstances. Of course, she can't indefinitely deal with waking up with a sharp pain in her back and some of the bruises had begun to look particularly gruesome, so there's nothing wrong with making the occasional visit to the healing tents. If she takes care of one thing at a time and sees a different healer each time, it minimizes the chance of any awkward questions being asked, which is all the better; she's not ready to talk about that dreadful day and is in no rush to change that.

Wildcard!

She probably won't be quite so cheery until later on in the month, but Hermione still needs to eat, drink, bathe, and presumably sleep. She may be a little awkward around those that had gone to Emprise du Lion with her, but she isn't about to actively ignore anyone or send them off. Her nerves might be a bit frayed, but there's still such a thing as etiquette, after all.

That pause is enough to get Jamie's attention, and as he goes to try and down some more of his tea-potion, his eyebrows arch up enough that they disappear into his bangs for a second or two - but then they settle back into place as he lowers the mug.

"From something that made you miss your friends, I'm guessing. Aye, well, I can't blame you for that."

He's been there himself - and not just in the last little while, although he's not entirely sure that right now it's not so much missing Zoe as it is that one side effect of the lyrium, given he kept thinking other people were his friends for a very long time while under its influence, but... maybe there's a reason why he had seen them, back. And maybe there's a reason now, and maybe, just maybe Hermione is more right that he's willing to admit.

Talking about tea is easier, and he wrinkles his nose down at his mug before taking one last swig of it and finishing off the contents. The mug's quickly set down, and if she wants to check to make sure it's empty, she's welcome to do so. For his part, he winds up settling back a bit, propping himself up on an elbow as he turns to watch her progress.

"Now, you know normally I'd say a good strong Scottish tea, but unless they've got that in Starkhaven, I'm fairly sure I'll not have much luck there. Something like that or English breakfast'd do alright, though." Anything that wasn't made out of flowers and roots, really, but ideally if there's a good strong black tea back there, he'll take it. Milk might be a bit trickier, but he has faith she'll be able to come up with something. "Don't suppose they've any biscuits back there, do they?"

"Aye, well. They've got bagpipes in Starkhaven," he points out, "So it's maybe not so far out of the realm of possibility. Something similar, anyway."

But she's right, they might not have anything like that - just like they likely don't have proper tea biscuits, and he lets out a sigh.

"You're maybe right about the tea biscuits. Think we'd have to go talk to someone in the kitchens and walk them through a recipe before something like that would happen. And like as not they'd not turn out the same. Maybe once Avery's better..."

Given how she'd looked after the fight, however, he suspects that might be a while yet, and he lets the rest of his thought remain unspoken. Instead he shifts again, turning so he can talk to her while she's getting the kettle set up.

"Look, though, a spot of milk'd be nice but I can live without it. You don't have to go to that sort of trouble, really. Not unless you'd want some too."

"Some of it's close, aye."

Some of it isn't, but there are times when listening to someone from Starkhaven is a bit like listening to someone from home, and he can't say as he minds that part of things at all. Rather than go on about that, however, he winds up studying Hermione for a few moments, a faint frown on his face. He remembers the problems she'd had trying to use some of her magic when she first arrived, and given what she's saying, he's starting to think that there's still some issues there - although the idea of it being because of magic being a beacon to demons doesn't even begin to cross his mind.

"Are you still having problems with your magic here? Have the mages not been able to figure out why that is?"

"Aye. Bad enough that we're stuck with these shards in our hands, but then there's that as well."

There were times where he had to wander just well any of them were going to be able to stay away from it. His gaze winds up drifting down to his hand, a slight frown crossing his face as he turns the palm up to look down at the glittering green mark embedded in it. It's still there when he lifts his head again, although his brow is furrowed as well, a clear sign that he's trying to put something together in his head.

"Look, your shard hasn't changed at all lately, has it? Like...och, how do I put it. Not in terms of what size it is, but in what it can do?"

"What?" Opening the rifts is the last thing on his mind, and the look that Hermione gets says as much even before he shakes his head. "Och, no. Why on Earth would I want to do that?"

He knows that there's been some speculation in regards to that, but personally, the last thing he wants to do was open up a rift and drop a load of demons on everyone's head. No, what he's worried about is completely different - and probably something that's better shown than told. Or at least at first, anyway, and he flicks a glance over towards the flap of the tent.

"Here, help me outside for a moment, will you? If they think you're taking me for some fresh air they'll like as not let it go without giving either of us a hard time. We can have the tea in a wee bit."

"Sina. Aye, I know. I was there for that."

There'd been reasons why that'd wound up happening, however, a certain set of circumstances that built up and lead to the rift opening - and ones that Jamie was fairly certain weren't going to wind up happening again, especially given that before he'd come here he hadn't had any more magic than your average rock.

Before being the operative word here.

Now, he wasn't so sure, and even though there's something quite uncertain in the way she reaches for his hand, he chooses to ignore that, instead wrapping his fingers around hers with no hesitation on his end.

"No, because I'll not be able to explain it as easily as I can show it. We don't have to go far, just somewhere that's a bit more open."

And preferably out of direct sight, but he'll worry about that part once they're out there.

"There's a spot right behind the tents that'll work. Please, Hermione? I'll even promise not to fuss about going back in after."

"Good thing I'm not an invalid then, I'd say."

And he does certainly seem to be able to walk just fine, although he doesn't complain about the extra support that her arm provides. He does wrinkle his nose at the mention of medicine, but he supposes that it's a small price to pay for getting to go outside, even if it'll only be for a few minutes.

"But...aye, alright then. I'll take it without complaining, I promise. Come on, it's this way."

The spot that he wants is in fact just behind the tents, in an area that's more or less out of sight of prying eyes. A training dummy has been set up there by some enterprising soul, close enough that someone who's recovered enough can use it but also far enough away that anyone practicing with it isn't going to bother the patients who need rest. Once he spots it, he turns and starts to head that way, a little slowly, but otherwise not showing any real signs of distress. Once they're within throwing range, he stops, glancing back down at Hermione with a considering expression on his face.

"Now, I'll not say as I mind the support, but you might want to stand behind me, just for a minute or so. Just to be on the safe side, aye?"

The expression on his face - at least for the moment - is much closer to the look he gets when he's annoyed, mouth tugging off to one side and staying there as he looks back down at her.

"It's not stupid. I don't want you getting hurt if something goes wrong, though."

Which should answer the part about it being dangerous, although as long as he's careful it shouldn't be - and with a sigh, he lets the vexed expression go, and lifts the hand with the shard, pointing it at the training dummy.

"Look, just don't step in front at me for a few seconds. Can you promise me that much?"

[personal profile] wontforgetyou 2016-11-07 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aye, I'll promise you that."

It's not as though he hasn't tried this on his own before, more than once. Given that, he feels pretty confident that he won't hurt himself - at least not in the strictest sense of the the word. There is some aching that comes along with what he's going to do, but that's more or less normal given the shard. He can deal with that just fine.

So he shifts his focus fully to the dummy, keeping his hand steady, taking a breath, and...nothing happens. The mark in his hand continues to stay exactly as it was a few seconds ago, not shifting or moving or doing anything, really. And the dummy stays right where it is as well, not that it should really be expected to do much in general.

After a few long moments of nothing, Jamie lets out a sigh of frustration, and starts to turn back towards Hermione to say something. It's only then that the mark in his hand seems to react, flaring to life and then, quite suddenly, shooting out a beam of light, similar to the rift energy that comes out when they try to close the rifts, but much more focused. Luckily, Jamie hasn't moved his hand, so the beam winds up effecting the dummy rather than anything else, giving it a good solid hit to its chest. On a person it would've staggered them, but all the dummy does is sway back a little before settling back into place.

While he can be that stubborn - and has in fact pretended not to be all that hurt more than once - this time he means what he says. The last thing he wants is to wind up spending more time in the healers tents than he has to.

Luckily, the after-effects that come with shooting out a single burst of energy from his hand are manageable, even in his current condition. An aching hand, feeling faintly drained...he's used to that. So long as he doesn't have to repeat the trick all that often, he'll deal, although there's something a touch more tired in his eyes as he looks back at her.

"Same stuff as that comes out of these marks when we close the rifts, as far as anyone knows, only it can hurt things. It- it's like someone's take one of those laser gun things and stuck it in my hand, only I've no idea what I need to do to get it to work reliably."

"Aye, I'm fairly sure the advisors know. It first started happening when I was out on a mission back...oh, a few months ago."

He knows full well that reports are filed for those, even if he hasn't had to personally submit one himself. Chances are someone's said something in one of those at some point, or word's gotten back to them some other way, just as he's fairly certain Solas knows what's going on, for much the same reason. At least now that he was able to get the mark to cooperate he knows he doesn't have to worry about inadvertently shooting Hermione - something he hadn't been sure about until just now. Still, even though he lets her take his hand, he still keeps it turned away from them...just in case.

"Likely Solas does as well, although I'd not had much success when I went to go ask him about it. But I'm thinking he's been told about it one way or the other, since he's supposed to know the most about the these marks in general, and they'd want his advice. I've no idea what they've said to him about it, though."
wontforgetyou: (serious)

[personal profile] wontforgetyou 2016-11-30 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not even sure he's in Skyhold any more, Hermione. You know people get sent out all the time. But he still might be researching it, even so."

He could understand by she was so upset, though. He'd been just as upset when it'd started happening - and maybe a bit lucky as well, given when it'd happened. If it had come up at some other time, or some other place, who knew what might have happened? But it hadn't, and he was starting to get the hang of it even without Solas, which was probably good if he didn't come back to Skyhold for awhile.

"I've not heard of anyone who can shoot things, but I've heard rumors of some folk who can make shields while using it. And before you ask, I've not heard of that many even for that. There's nothing saying it'll happen to everyone. But it's also a sort of magic, isn't it? There's people here that can help with that, lots of them."

He brought a hand to his head, rubbing at it for a moment. It was starting to hurt again, and even though it was likely just a regular headache, he knew he should probably go back in soon. For the moment, however, he let his hand drop back to his side.

"Besides, you'll know if it's going to act up anyway. It's like when a rift opens unexpectedly near you. The mark sparks and flares up enough that it'll wake you even if you're asleep. Believe me."
