"Oh," she says, quickly waving a hand in the air. "That will not be necessary! He and I have done plenty for the Inquisition in separate locations. Rest assured, I will not weep into my pillow if I am without his company." Really, Sam. Christine is no sap. Besides, she wouldn't want him to feel obligated to go. Coming with her to find out about her father and then tell her mother was a different matter entirely, but she's been on several missions since without him.
"Standing there pretty? Well, you think very highly of yourself," she teases, moving out of the way to resume sipping her drink.
"Oh it's not you I'm worried about; I'm concerned that he'll be the one crying into his pillow," he says cheekily. After all it was him pretty much asking Christine to come and meet his family - particularly his aunt who was pretty much his mother figure.
"Honestly I'm told I should think more highly of myself. I'm just repeating what others have said about me." It only takes a few moments for him to relocate the pie into the oven before returning to his own glass, brows raised curiously. "What, do you not think me pretty, Christine?"
Christine makes a scoffing sound because she can't imagine Church doing anything of the sort. But she knows Sam is just teasing her the way she always does with him, so she'll let it go. She figures she's spoken enough about her and Church's situation. They're the Thedas equivalent of friends with benefits; nothing more. Except so much more, but good luck getting her to admit to it or even realize it at this stage.
"Oh, need me to stroke your ego, do you?" she asks, before taking a sip and eyeing him over the rim of her glass. Then she sets it down and regards him carefully.
"I think you are very attractive, Sam. Had I not been so set on teasing you when first we met, I probably would have flirted. But I like this more." She gestures between them. "The... relationship we have. We are not bound by blood, but we are as good as family, are we not?"
Sam snorts. "Hardly. I just think highly of your opinion," he says with a smile, going for his own drink, though stops short of taking a sip from it when sees her actually giving him a once over. Should he turn around for you, Christine?
The bit of information at the beginning does have him raising his brows. Not the part with her saying he was attractive, but the part about the flirting. "Really? And what about me just screamed 'tease'?" He laughs, already with a thought in mind as to why. "But I agree. We're good like this." On a more serious note though- "And if you ever need anything... just need to talk, I'm here." Of course she knew that, but he knows it was still nice to hear.
That won't be necessary, Sam. She's already checked out the goods. Back in the day before you came to mean something to her.
"Oh," she laughs, cocking her head a little. "You know. The unfortunate circumstances of you being born in Ferelden. It was simply too good to pass up." Her smile turns more fond and she nods, feeling a bit overcome. But she isn't going to do anything silly like cry right now. Instead she says, "Thank you. The same goes for you." Her throat is tight as she says it, but she'll get command of herself in a moment.
Oh. Really? Maker he really hadn't noticed at all at that time that people looked at him like that.
"And look where that teasing has gotten you. Baking pies and drinking in the kitchen with a Ferelden, taking care of a dog, and considering on living in an Avvar hold. How scandalous." His nose wrinkles in amusement as he teases. For all his teasing though he is happy that Christine is enjoying her life and has plans for later on.
Christine does well to cover her emotion at the time, but having dealt with so many trying to keep it together in the healers' tents, he can hear that slight edge in her voice. So quietly he gathers his glass and moves over to lean against his shoulder against hers, humming lightly in thanks to the offer.
She huffs out a noise at his spot on assessment of her and her current circumstances. Everything is true, and she can hardly believe it herself. But in the end, it's not so bad a thing. Ponce is even starting to behave better too.
"There should be a word for that. Like 'comeuppance' but not so harsh." Unfortunately the concept of karma doesn't exist in Thedas, and she shrugs it off.
"Well, this shall take a bit of time. Let's sit outside awhile."
"Hm. Irony?" He's not sure if that word is correct, but it's all he can think of at the moment. Either way he gets what she is talking about, and is in complete agreement that there should be a word if there isn't one already.
"Sounds good to me. Perhaps someplace a little less warm?"
