Skyhold
He's learned by now that his wand is not reliable anymore and it pains him to even try to cast spells and risk it breaking completely again. He doesn't have the Elder Wand to fix it this time and he can't risk losing it completely again. It feels as if a part of him has cracked and he feels real remorse over not being able to easily use magic. It's almost as if his senses had been dulled.
Eventually, though, he realizes that he might be able to use the staff based magic that the mages here use. He won't be floating teacups across the room any time soon but it's better than being defenseless. He knows enough by now to know that he can't just make a declaration that he wants to learn magic here without some people misunderstanding his motives so he doesn't make a loud announcement using the crystals.
Instead, he spends the day around where he's learned some mages meet to teach and learn. Maybe if one of them doesn't seem as busy he can ask for help.
Warden Camp
He also treks his way to the Warden Camp because he knows that they have mages there and tend not to be as distrustful of them. At least, that's what he's heard about them. He's still having trouble remembering all the different factions of Thedas and keeping which ones hate which other groups straight.
It's the first time he's ever been to the camp so he also can't help but feel a level of curiosity. He volunteered to help bring them supplies so his visit isn't too awkward and once he's done unloading it (again wishing for the use of his wand so that he could just float the crates where they need to be) he wanders a little deeper into the camp to see if he can find any Warden mages.

Warden Camp
"Garahel, are you bothering him? I won't have you being a pest."
no subject
"He's not a pest," he promises as he looks up at the woman coming over and holds up the ball to toss it to her. "So this is a mabari?"
no subject
Catching that ball, Inessa smiles proudly. "He is, indeed. They're the signature breed of Ferelden and well-deserving of it. I've yet to meet another breed as intelligent or capable as they." If that's what it means to be a 'dog lord', then she'll accept that happily.
no subject
"Mages here turn into animals too, don't they?" he asks, looking over her clothes and any weapons she might have nearby curiously to see any sign that she's a mage. He thought by offering that he knew and cared for people who had magic he might help ease any understandable suspicion that would arise from asking for mages.

The truth was that she missed the faint scent of ozone in the air. It had become a comfort for her. And when she was feeling homesick, which seemed like every other day lately, she would find the places where the Mages liked to congregate. Just to breathe the air and feel it wrap around her, like a comfortable blanket.
She tended to perch in the high places, in trees or over doorways--to better stay out of the way and, well, unnoticed. But she'd only just arrived and she couldn't very well climb up with her talons when there was something else present.
He was an unfamiliar face. Human, judging from his scent. Ariadne smiled when she saw him, dropping him a curtsy. "I'm sorry, my lord," she said. "I don't mean to intrude."

Whoops...
She gave him a subtle, teasing smile. If only to let him know that she understood that wasn't his actual name.
It was her way.
never apologize for showing me more of her face!
He could tease too.

Skyhold
Oh and his ears are pointed, signaling that he is indeed an Elf - though not an Elf of this world.
"You seem to be on a mission."
no subject
"Err..." he started and felt stupid and sluggish for a moment before he cleared his throat. "I'm afraid so. I was hoping to find a teacher."
no subject
"A teacher in what subject might I inquire?"

skyhold;
"Are you seeking something? Someone?" Even in Skyhold Morrigan is rarely parted from her stave, rolling it idly in her palm as she waits for an answer. "I have seen you, even so far as the Warden camp. Where does he go, what does he want, I wonder?"
no subject
His back straightens as he considers her. He knows her by reputation already even after only being here for a short while but only a very scarce details. She helped the save the world once, something that he can relate to, and she's powerful in magic.
"A teacher, actually," he answers, easily supplying the information. "I don't like feeling helpless here and my magic is almost useless in this reality. I was hoping to find someone willing to teach me to use a staff."
He didn't beat around the bush with her. He thought she could judge his desire to learn magic here however she thought best, rather than him trying to skirt around the issue.
no subject
"What do you use instead of a staff where you hail from?" To go from using magic to being what sounds like close to utterly without is something she can hardly force herself to imagine, the ideal for far too many in this world. "There are no spells that might be cast with but the hands there?"
A simple thing, or for her at least, to let lightning spark to life in the palm of one hand for a moment to demonstrate before she curls her fingers and allows it to disappear, arching a brow at him. She settles her staff again, worn from years of her hands gripping it in battle or simply as one might use a walking stick over rough terrain. "Many buy their staffs, the merchants here will sell them or you will find one able to craft them but I was taught by my mother to craft mine own, and I find I much prefer it. You know every part of it, exactly how to wield it."

Warden Camp
Anders picks Purrelden off his lap and sets her on the ground, standing, before starting to head over. As expected, she prances alongside him, batting at the hem of his robes every now and then.
"You're a new face down here. Thank you for bringing the supplies."
no subject
Slowly, he comes forward a bit. He can tell by the robes that this man is a mage and, more importantly, he has a cat. "Is she friendly?" he asks, wanting to reach out and pet her. His hand moves a bit and a faint green glow flickers. He tries to ignore the shard in favor of paying attention to the cat and her mage companion.
Skyhold
"Not a word out of you," she pants out. "Aside from the dwarves and some of the elves, just about everyone here is bigger than me. And since I can't exactly Apparate out of fights anymore...."
Granted, she hasn't yet tried, though she's certainly been tempted on more than one occasion. She just doesn't fancy getting Splinched, and so possibly taking a few hits in physical combat seems comparatively safer.
no subject
Then she mentions Apparation and the groans a bit. "I didn't realise that," he admits. "I also can't Disarm. Those are the only two spells I'm any good at too." He's teasing, of course, but he does have a sense of worry that settles over him. He needs to learn how to use a staff soon.
no subject
Of course, despite his teasing tone, she still understands that Harry certainly isn't happy about his magic being limited. Part of her wants to mother him a bit and tell him that it's all right, that with a bit of practice, they should both be back to the sort of proficiency they'd had when they'd started Dumbledore's Army, and a little hard work would see to it that they'd get even better. Instead, she tries to meet his joking tone with a dry one of her own; they both have enough reasons to be broody these days, after all.
"They're not the only two. I'm sure you're good at at least three spells, if not as many as four." Straightening up away from the wall, she rolls up her sleeves a bit and adds, "We could practice some. Magic, I mean. Not the fighting bit, since I'm hardly in any position to teach you anything on that front, unless you'd like to learn how to fall without hurting yourself too badly."

"I'm guessing you're not here to join the ranks of the Wardens?"

People do get curious and come by the camp often enough, so he's used to that.

All the same, he had a large smile on his face as he approached. "Are you looking for someone, boy?"
Definitely not a mage here. One summoned by mages in his own world which still wasn't the same thing. Still, he hardly minded a conversation with someone who looked like he had something he needed then.
no subject
"I might be," he replied. The words might have been round about but his returning smile and tone of voice was friendly. "I'm not really sure exactly who though."
no subject
He was sure that was it anyway. Putting two and two together really wasn't that much of a challenge when the boy wasn't exactly being the most subtle in this moment. Though he had to wonder if the boy thought he was accomplishing that at all.
"What are you looking for one for?"
