WHO: Harry Potter and OPEN
WHAT: Realising that a cracked wand is no good for fighting demons, Harry seeks out some mages who might be wiling to teach him how to fight with a staff.
WHEN: Throughout the day
WHERE: Warden Camp and Skyhold Proper
NOTES: This post is specifically for him to begin to learn Thedas style magic BUT it also functions as a general OPEN post which means even if your character isn't a mage feel free to reply to ask him why he's looming around or to just say hi!

Skyhold

He's learned by now that his wand is not reliable anymore and it pains him to even try to cast spells and risk it breaking completely again. He doesn't have the Elder Wand to fix it this time and he can't risk losing it completely again. It feels as if a part of him has cracked and he feels real remorse over not being able to easily use magic. It's almost as if his senses had been dulled.

Eventually, though, he realizes that he might be able to use the staff based magic that the mages here use. He won't be floating teacups across the room any time soon but it's better than being defenseless. He knows enough by now to know that he can't just make a declaration that he wants to learn magic here without some people misunderstanding his motives so he doesn't make a loud announcement using the crystals.

Instead, he spends the day around where he's learned some mages meet to teach and learn. Maybe if one of them doesn't seem as busy he can ask for help.

Warden Camp

He also treks his way to the Warden Camp because he knows that they have mages there and tend not to be as distrustful of them. At least, that's what he's heard about them. He's still having trouble remembering all the different factions of Thedas and keeping which ones hate which other groups straight.

It's the first time he's ever been to the camp so he also can't help but feel a level of curiosity. He volunteered to help bring them supplies so his visit isn't too awkward and once he's done unloading it (again wishing for the use of his wand so that he could just float the crates where they need to be) he wanders a little deeper into the camp to see if he can find any Warden mages.

One is easily found, thanks to her companion. Inessa out near one of the firepits, her staff propped up against a log while she plays fetch with her mabari. No matter how many times she tosses that ball, Garahel never seems to get tired of it. One of those times has the ball landing near Harry, and the mabari perks up and barks, coming over to sniff the human and maybe get pet before he snags the ball. Looking over upon hearing that back, Inessa shades her eyes.

"Garahel, are you bothering him? I won't have you being a pest."

Garahel responds with a happy grunt, running circles around Harry and affectionately bumping up against him. Not hard enough to knock him over, unless he's completely unprepared.

Catching that ball, Inessa smiles proudly. "He is, indeed. They're the signature breed of Ferelden and well-deserving of it. I've yet to meet another breed as intelligent or capable as they." If that's what it means to be a 'dog lord', then she'll accept that happily.

Ariadne had no magic to speak of. Nothing she'd ever been able to do back home--or here, for that matter--was anything other than biological. But that didn't mean she was a complete stranger to magic. After all, she'd attended missionary school in Valeria. She'd watched her Elf classmates learn their spells. And she lived in Valeria proper. Or...used to.

The truth was that she missed the faint scent of ozone in the air. It had become a comfort for her. And when she was feeling homesick, which seemed like every other day lately, she would find the places where the Mages liked to congregate. Just to breathe the air and feel it wrap around her, like a comfortable blanket.

She tended to perch in the high places, in trees or over doorways--to better stay out of the way and, well, unnoticed. But she'd only just arrived and she couldn't very well climb up with her talons when there was something else present.

He was an unfamiliar face. Human, judging from his scent. Ariadne smiled when she saw him, dropping him a curtsy. "I'm sorry, my lord," she said. "I don't mean to intrude."

"Oh," Ariadne said, straightening out again. It wasn't exactly an unusual reaction. She got it quite a lot, especially in Thedas. Still. "I always figure it's better to be safe than sorry," she said. "Some people can be very particular about titles. You don't want to offend someone accidentally." She folded her hands behind her back. "It's nice to meet you, Harry Just Harry."

She gave him a subtle, teasing smile. If only to let him know that she understood that wasn't his actual name.

It was her way.

Harry's ambition is commendable and Thingol would offer him aid if he knew magic. As it stands, he is likely striking to the young Wizard by himself without magic added into the equation. He stands at six feet and eight inches tall - a shorter height than he is accustomed to (he is usually eight feet tall) - his hair is pure silver and falls in a cascade down his back. His robes are ornate and there is a sword sheathed at his hip.

Oh and his ears are pointed, signaling that he is indeed an Elf - though not an Elf of this world.

"You seem to be on a mission."

[personal profile] thehiddenking 2017-01-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Thingol was patient, smiling pleasantly as the child found his words. Harry was older than Túrin had been when he had been brought to Doriath for his own safety, but he was still young by Elven standards. As such he was precious to the Elven-King and Lord of Beleriand.

"A teacher in what subject might I inquire?"

Usually Morrigan is either in her study or not in her study, which is marvellously helpful as far as tracking her down goes but she that's as good as it gets. She has things to do, places to be, but her comings and goings are usually noted especially when it involves having to shuttle someone small to and from his lessons to make sure he attends them on time. When she feels her gaze drawn to a young man in particular after having watched him for long enough, she finally claps eyes on him proper, clearing her throat.

"Are you seeking something? Someone?" Even in Skyhold Morrigan is rarely parted from her stave, rolling it idly in her palm as she waits for an answer. "I have seen you, even so far as the Warden camp. Where does he go, what does he want, I wonder?"

Well he's willing to ask more than just those who come from the Circle, or to consider it at least, and that is to be commended. Though it serves as a reminder that when it comes to rifters, there are few areas where she knows a great deal, and then only as much as it might pertain to the things that interest her. Rifters and whatever magics they might use, outside experiences with demons, is something she has had little to do with.

"What do you use instead of a staff where you hail from?" To go from using magic to being what sounds like close to utterly without is something she can hardly force herself to imagine, the ideal for far too many in this world. "There are no spells that might be cast with but the hands there?"

A simple thing, or for her at least, to let lightning spark to life in the palm of one hand for a moment to demonstrate before she curls her fingers and allows it to disappear, arching a brow at him. She settles her staff again, worn from years of her hands gripping it in battle or simply as one might use a walking stick over rough terrain. "Many buy their staffs, the merchants here will sell them or you will find one able to craft them but I was taught by my mother to craft mine own, and I find I much prefer it. You know every part of it, exactly how to wield it."

People trudging through the camp aren't rare, but Anders watches them. Safety is something he's never entirely sure of anymore, even here. The young man looks safe enough, though. Especially since he just brought stuff down.

Anders picks Purrelden off his lap and sets her on the ground, standing, before starting to head over. As expected, she prances alongside him, batting at the hem of his robes every now and then.

"You're a new face down here. Thank you for bringing the supplies."

Hermione occasionally attends certain magical classes, and by "occasionally" it's of course meant that she attends every single one she can manage without a Time-Turner, especially since she's also involved in a few non-magical classes at the behest of her friends. It's when she's leaning against a wall and still trying to catch her breath from a fairly grueling self-defense class that she notices Harry nearby looking at her, and she chuckles dryly to herself as she absently wipes at her brow.

"Not a word out of you," she pants out. "Aside from the dwarves and some of the elves, just about everyone here is bigger than me. And since I can't exactly Apparate out of fights anymore...."

Granted, she hasn't yet tried, though she's certainly been tempted on more than one occasion. She just doesn't fancy getting Splinched, and so possibly taking a few hits in physical combat seems comparatively safer.

She's not entirely sure why he's looking at her like that, but Hermione assumes it has something to do with the fact that Harry is, at his core, a boy, and boys do seem to love watching a good fight. She'd seen a similar look in his and Ron's eyes after she'd punched Malfoy all those years ago. Odd, what makes them happy.

Of course, despite his teasing tone, she still understands that Harry certainly isn't happy about his magic being limited. Part of her wants to mother him a bit and tell him that it's all right, that with a bit of practice, they should both be back to the sort of proficiency they'd had when they'd started Dumbledore's Army, and a little hard work would see to it that they'd get even better. Instead, she tries to meet his joking tone with a dry one of her own; they both have enough reasons to be broody these days, after all.

"They're not the only two. I'm sure you're good at at least three spells, if not as many as four." Straightening up away from the wall, she rolls up her sleeves a bit and adds, "We could practice some. Magic, I mean. Not the fighting bit, since I'm hardly in any position to teach you anything on that front, unless you'd like to learn how to fall without hurting yourself too badly."

Warden Camp

Though not a mage, Kain is inevitably hanging out in the Warden camp at some point of the day. At the moment, he's relaxing not far from his tent and reading a book on dragons. He's so intent on what he's reading that he almost misses when the newcomer to the camp approaches. He glances up. One of the rifters, he thinks, though he's pretty sure their paths have yet to cross.

"I'm guessing you're not here to join the ranks of the Wardens?"

[personal profile] in_death_sacrifice 2017-01-23 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
"If I told you what it took, you'd undoubtedly agree with what you've heard." Not that he'd reveal order secrets, though he's always willing to talk about being a Warden in general. It means that much to him. Kain gives a half-smile in return, setting a marker in his dragon book and closing it for the moment. "It's far from an easy life, afterward, either. Though I wouldn't trade it for anything. Was there something else- or someone- you were expecting to find here?"

People do get curious and come by the camp often enough, so he's used to that.

He wasn't a mage but he still walked up to the boy when he saw him looming around where the mages usually were. It wasn't that typical, after all. Really it was a good reason for him to go and talk to anyone. Not that the very large man ever needed a reason for things since he sort of just did as he pleased in general. Such was the way of Iskandar really.

All the same, he had a large smile on his face as he approached. "Are you looking for someone, boy?"

Definitely not a mage here. One summoned by mages in his own world which still wasn't the same thing. Still, he hardly minded a conversation with someone who looked like he had something he needed then.

"Really? Well I'm going to assume you want a mage given how you are standing in an area they tend to spend a lot of time in."

He was sure that was it anyway. Putting two and two together really wasn't that much of a challenge when the boy wasn't exactly being the most subtle in this moment. Though he had to wonder if the boy thought he was accomplishing that at all.

"What are you looking for one for?"
