OPEN LOG: Establishing a Base in Kirkwall
WHO: Many People
WHAT: Cleaning up Kirkwall
WHEN: Cloudreach 1-21
WHERE: Kirkwall
NOTES: This log post is for characters who go early to Kirkwall to assist in preparing it for the rest of those assigned there. We strongly encourage IC discussion of things left to character discretion—someone should definitely do a crystal post to discuss what to do with the personal belongings left behind in the Gallows or what new form the statues should take!

The city's complicated past is not easy to forget, history having earmarked many corners of the stone city. A ship approaching the harbor spots the city's namesake: an imposing black wall. It is visible for miles, and carved into the cliff side are a pantheon of vile guardians representing the Old Gods. Over the years, the Chantry has effaced many of these profane sentinels, but it will take many more years to erase them all.
Also carved into the cliff is a channel that permits ships into the city's interior. Flanking the channel are two massive bronze statues—the Twins of Kirkwall. The statues have a practical use. Kirkwall sits next to the narrowest point of the Waking Sea, and a massive chain net can be erected between the statues and the lighthouse, closing off the only narrow navigable lane. This stranglehold on sea traffic is jealously guarded by the ever-changing rulers of the city as the net trolls taxes, tolls, and extortions in from the sea.
—From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of a Chantry Scholar, by Brother Genitivi
Establishing a presence in Kirkwall is a delicate matter. First, there's Provisional Viscount Bran Cavin—a man so used to batting back friendly offers of entirely harmless occupation of the battered city-state that his first three responses to the Inquisition's leadership appeared to be slightly personalized form letters. Proving that the Inquisition is here to work and not to conquer will be a process. The first step in that process is the second reason the move is delicate: the only building the Provisional Viscount is willing to part with is the Gallows, left quarantined and unoccupied since Knight-Commander Meredith Stannard's famous crystallization into red lyrium in the courtyard. The Gallows have since overgrown with red lyrium. If anyone is going to live and work there, there's a lot of work to do.

Oop, there goes the arrow, down to the ground. Prompto quickly picks it back up and notches it again, this time trying to keep a better grip on it. He pulls back again and this time it flies... granted, it misses its mark, but hey, at least it went?
no subject
"All right - so - you'll at least get the arrow in the right direction. So, I trade in goods, information, and gossip. If you have anything good out of the three ... the bow and arrows are yours."
no subject
"Um." Crap, he really doesn't have all that much. He digs out a dagger and places it down, then gestures to the bag at his side. "So, I haven't been here long and don't have much. But I have this dagger, and a camera. I can take some photos for you!" He pauses. "Or... are you from around here and have no idea what I'm talking about?"
no subject
Still, the boy's comment makes him blink. "...I am not from around here, and I still have no idea what you're talking about."
no subject
"Well, same difference. Here." Prompto reaches into his bag and pulls out said camera. It's a big, clunky looking thing. He shows it to Tyrion. "So, uh, where I'm from - and some of the other Rifters - we have these things called cameras. They take pictures! Like, paintings, but not painted. They capture a still image which I can then print from the film inside. It's what captures the image, essentially." Or so he hopes. He has to figure out how. "So, yeah. Painting, but much cheaper and honestly, way better in my opinion. Not that paintings aren't nice..."
no subject
He looks at the device curiously, peering at it with fascinated eyes. He then glances up, before he rubs his chin. "So you can take ... pictures of things, and they are a true, physical thing? Like I could take this piece of paper and it would be an exact painted copy of what I asked you to take a picture of? Say, a person or a place?"
no subject
Prompto nods, glad to see him understanding it at least somewhat. "Exactly. It wouldn't be in color. I mean, it's possible, but I don't have the right chemicals with me to be able to develop the pictures in color. So it'd be black and white and gray, but yeah. If I took a picture of that paper, when the photo's printed, it would show you exactly how that paper looks now."
no subject
He looks thoughtful, before he taps on the camera once more, giving Prompto an intent look. "Then I shall take five photographs, from your device. On people or places. I shall send you a note when I require one."
