OPEN LOG: Establishing a Base in Kirkwall

WHO: Many People
WHAT: Cleaning up Kirkwall
WHEN: Cloudreach 1-21
WHERE: Kirkwall
NOTES: This log post is for characters who go early to Kirkwall to assist in preparing it for the rest of those assigned there. We strongly encourage IC discussion of things left to character discretion—someone should definitely do a crystal post to discuss what to do with the personal belongings left behind in the Gallows or what new form the statues should take!

Kirkwall once lived on the edge of the Tevinter Imperium and was home to nearly a million slaves. Stolen from elven lands or shipped from across the sea, all slaves fed the Imperium's unquenchable thirst for expansion. They worked in massive quarries and sweltering foundries that produced stone and steel for the Empire.

The city's complicated past is not easy to forget, history having earmarked many corners of the stone city. A ship approaching the harbor spots the city's namesake: an imposing black wall. It is visible for miles, and carved into the cliff side are a pantheon of vile guardians representing the Old Gods. Over the years, the Chantry has effaced many of these profane sentinels, but it will take many more years to erase them all.

Also carved into the cliff is a channel that permits ships into the city's interior. Flanking the channel are two massive bronze statues—the Twins of Kirkwall. The statues have a practical use. Kirkwall sits next to the narrowest point of the Waking Sea, and a massive chain net can be erected between the statues and the lighthouse, closing off the only narrow navigable lane. This stranglehold on sea traffic is jealously guarded by the ever-changing rulers of the city as the net trolls taxes, tolls, and extortions in from the sea.

—From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of a Chantry Scholar, by Brother Genitivi

Establishing a presence in Kirkwall is a delicate matter. First, there's Provisional Viscount Bran Cavin—a man so used to batting back friendly offers of entirely harmless occupation of the battered city-state that his first three responses to the Inquisition's leadership appeared to be slightly personalized form letters. Proving that the Inquisition is here to work and not to conquer will be a process. The first step in that process is the second reason the move is delicate: the only building the Provisional Viscount is willing to part with is the Gallows, left quarantined and unoccupied since Knight-Commander Meredith Stannard's famous crystallization into red lyrium in the courtyard. The Gallows have since overgrown with red lyrium. If anyone is going to live and work there, there's a lot of work to do.

"Oh, uh... sure." Prompto picks up one and notches an arrow. He has never shot from a bow before. He swallows nervously and aims it at the far wall. He pulls back-

Oop, there goes the arrow, down to the ground. Prompto quickly picks it back up and notches it again, this time trying to keep a better grip on it. He pulls back again and this time it flies... granted, it misses its mark, but hey, at least it went?

Tyrion winces slightly at the first attempt - he's not entirely certain he should let this young man go running off with a weapon he has no control over. The second time -- well, at least he can shoot it in the right direction.

"All right - so - you'll at least get the arrow in the right direction. So, I trade in goods, information, and gossip. If you have anything good out of the three ... the bow and arrows are yours."

"With some practice, I should have the hang of it!" He hopes he sounds more convincing than he feels.

"Um." Crap, he really doesn't have all that much. He digs out a dagger and places it down, then gestures to the bag at his side. "So, I haven't been here long and don't have much. But I have this dagger, and a camera. I can take some photos for you!" He pauses. "Or... are you from around here and have no idea what I'm talking about?"

"One would hope. Remember, the pointy end goes into the other fellow, and not yourself." He smirked faintly, before he glances at the dagger. That would be a good trade, or something to keep. Daggers he can handle.

Still, the boy's comment makes him blink. "...I am not from around here, and I still have no idea what you're talking about."

"Gee, thanks," he says drolly. You're so helpful, Tyrion.

"Well, same difference. Here." Prompto reaches into his bag and pulls out said camera. It's a big, clunky looking thing. He shows it to Tyrion. "So, uh, where I'm from - and some of the other Rifters - we have these things called cameras. They take pictures! Like, paintings, but not painted. They capture a still image which I can then print from the film inside. It's what captures the image, essentially." Or so he hopes. He has to figure out how. "So, yeah. Painting, but much cheaper and honestly, way better in my opinion. Not that paintings aren't nice..."
tallasaking: (Oh Really?)

"Advice is always free here." Tyrion stated primly, before the smirk returns, "Until it is not."

He looks at the device curiously, peering at it with fascinated eyes. He then glances up, before he rubs his chin. "So you can take ... pictures of things, and they are a true, physical thing? Like I could take this piece of paper and it would be an exact painted copy of what I asked you to take a picture of? Say, a person or a place?"
crowncitizen: (As we contemplate goodbye)

[personal profile] crowncitizen 2017-04-29 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He snorts. "Right. That's how it always works."

Prompto nods, glad to see him understanding it at least somewhat. "Exactly. It wouldn't be in color. I mean, it's possible, but I don't have the right chemicals with me to be able to develop the pictures in color. So it'd be black and white and gray, but yeah. If I took a picture of that paper, when the photo's printed, it would show you exactly how that paper looks now."
tallasaking: (Oh Really?)

[personal profile] tallasaking 2017-05-02 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are a quick student in the school of life, my young friend."

He looks thoughtful, before he taps on the camera once more, giving Prompto an intent look. "Then I shall take five photographs, from your device. On people or places. I shall send you a note when I require one."
crowncitizen: (We've both always been broken)

[personal profile] crowncitizen 2017-05-03 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Deal." Prompto beams. "I'm still hashing out details with getting the film developed and printed. If I can't for some reason, I'll let you know and pay you for the bow and arrow with money." But he's pretty sure he'll manage to. He's already been offered help. "Is there any you want me to start with? Or even just taking a picture now, to show as proof once it's developed?"
tallasaking: (Oh Really?)

[personal profile] tallasaking 2017-05-03 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I shall accept both - I am a man of ... interesting tastes." He thinks about that, before stating simply, "I would like a picture of Chancellor Bran, if you think you can manage it."
crowncitizen: (Took me high and left me low)

[personal profile] crowncitizen 2017-05-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh... who's that, exactly?" Prompto is never in the know of who's who in his world, let alone here. "And where can I find him?"
tallasaking: (Laughing)

[personal profile] tallasaking 2017-05-15 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Well, dear boy, that would be the Interim Head Of The City. You'll find him in the Viscount's Keep, in Hightown." Amusement flashed through his green eyes. "You cannot miss him. He is the one with the most sour expression."
crowncitizen: (Took me high and left me low)

Oh, this makes him uneasy. Stealth photography is going to be difficult with this thing. But he really needs this bow. And, if his photography can get off the ground and he can make money doing it, he'll need customers. "I'll give it my best shot. But, uh... are the guardsmen here particularly, ah... cranky?"

[personal profile] tallasaking 2017-05-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Well unless you are sticking a sword to his throat, I think you ought to be all right." He tipped his head up towards Hightown. "Just remember to keep a smile on your face."
crowncitizen: (I honestly never imagined)

[personal profile] crowncitizen 2017-05-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay. Smile, and resist any sudden urge to stab the guy. I think I can manage that." DEEP BREATH, HE'S GOT THIS. Maybe. Hopefully. "I'll let you know how it goes. Will you be here awhile?"

"I think that's a good idea." He stated with a faint smirk, before he shook his head a little. "I think I will not be going anywhere for awhile."
