Player Plot: Unwanted Houseguests

WHO: Fenris, Aleron, Bethany, Korrin, Inessa, Church, Saoirse, and Ellana
WHAT: Getting rid of some nasty visitors... and a little demony surprise twist on top of that! (OOC Post)
WHEN: Close to the end of Bloomingtide, we'll go with the 29th
WHERE: Fenris' mansion in Hightown
NOTES: This is slightly forward-dated to the end of the month. See directions below about groups and things! As for warnings, uhhh... bad interior decorating?

The manor stands in Hightown, Kirkwall's high class area where the nobles live. Fenris had intended to step in and reclaim it when he'd first arrived in Kirkwall, but there were... complications. Major complications. He's had to do quite a bit of sneaky surveillance to find out what was even going on. As he uncovered more over the course of the month, it only made him angrier. A magister had seen fit to move on in and take over while he'd been away. To make matters worse, he's brought along a bunch of slavers, and they've really started making themselves at home as they use the house as a base of operations.

Now that Fenris has all of the information, he's more sure than ever that this has to be dealt with. Immediately. It's more than he can handle alone, though.

So he asks around and finally gathers a group together to deal with it...

Group 1: Fenris, Aleron, Bethany, and Korrin
This group will be going in first! They'll make their way through the house and generally deal with taking down slavers. There's another subthread for the initial battle against the magister and his followers.

Group 2: Inessa, Church, Saoirse, and Ellana
After a rift erupts and Fenris makes a distress call over the crystals, these folks will be joining in. Now it's a matter of fiiighting all the demons, and making sure that rift gets sealed. (It's all on you, Church!)

That call for help is soon answered, in the form of a mage and her mabari. As Garahel charges, Inessa casts Pull of the Abyss to draw any local demons to that central point. That will be followed up with Veilstrike, to knock them down. A promising start, but she's not about to let down her guard.

Church...realizes pretty quickly that he's the only one with a shard in this whole thing, and there's no time to call for any other backup. Shit, they're not supposed to be able to pain laser a rift closed by themselves, but...what the fuck else is he gonna do, sit on his god damn thumbs?

He just has to get close enough first. Church has no magic and no super special video game abilities. He just has his sword. And the little shield from his shard. Well, that's one super special video game ability, but c'mon, does that really count? "Cover me," he orders, even if he's in no position to really order anyone for shit, moving in. Any demons of reasonable size in his way he'll take a slash at, but he wants to save his energy if he can to maneuver as close to the rift as he can.

"On it!" Inessa gestures for Garahel to do just that, the large mabari bounding over to attract any demons' attention away from Church and toward him. He's protected by the barrier Inessa cast, and thus reassured she turns her attention to finishing off what demons remain nearby. Whatever demon nearest Church that isn't distracted by Garahel will be hit with a Misdirection Hex.

Oh cool, that actually worked. He doesn't care what Araceli fears, sometimes it's good to be a Rifter. Doesn't mean this is going to suck any less. Church maneuvers around the hexed demon--he could waste time fighting, or he can close it now so more don't show up. It sucks as a choice, but the choice is clear.

Also clear is a patch through the bad guys and demons enough that he's close enough to do this. Or try to do this. So long as they watch his back. Y'know, so he doesn't get stabbed in it. He'd prefer not getting stabbed in the back. Or the front. Or at all, if it can be helped. He steadies himself, feet planted, takes a breath, and raises his hand. The bolt of green from it is a familiar shock to the system; he just hopes it's enough.

"Then we will!" Inessa only had time to set down an array of ice mines in front of herself before the demons snapped out of it and more appeared. She lures them towards her with a few blasts from her staff, only for the mines to be tripped and encase the nearest ones in ice. Garahel leaps at those who managed to escape that fate, keeping them focused on the large mabari and not the rifter with the shard.

The snap of power zaps his hand as surely as anything else, and he pulls back with a yelp. Better for him to pick up and move, ducking out of the way of a demon still shaking off the stun before slamming his sword into it. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of the chaos, but he sees where people are generally aiming to get their traps and distractions going and sets himself back up, rooting himself back to the floor for another mano y mano round with the rift. Just a little more.

Just after Fenris is struck, Inessa responds with a healing spell. She can't afford to have him drop while faced with such stakes, after all. Then she turns her attention to the demons rushing her and smirks as they become encased by ice. Stonefist shatters one, and the rest are bombarded with energy from her staff before they can respond. Ice flies everywhere, forcing Inessa to shield her face with her arm.

"Guys...guys, I don't want to alarm anyone, but if we could pick up the--"

He sinks heavily to a knee, weakness striking him as slow and draining as the rift is closing. "Oof. The pace. Pick up--" Church pulls his hand away from the rift again, only to put up his small glowing shield of energy. Ice particles thwack against it, bouncing or otherwise sliding to the floor. "Nice," he says about the shattered ice show with a tired, lopsided smile.

Ellana doesn't think it's a good idea to let Fenris take on the magister alone, so she rushes off after him in time to see the door break apart. She lets Fenris enter and takes in the layout of the room before setting down a fire mine on one side of Calanthus, blocking his escape that way.

"I've got the door covered!" she calls, both so Fenris knows who set the spell, and knows that this man isn't getting past her.

Sending Garahel up the stairs, Inessa follows as soon as possible, blurring ahead on waves of magic. She pops into place just as the fire mine is set, and Garahel without needing to be told is a big, muscular barrier wherever he needs to be. For Inessa's part, she taps into her necromancy talent and casts Terror. Whether it will hold for long, she's not certain, but the Grey Warden mage hopes that Fenris gets some satisfaction from seeing its effect on the magister.

It is truly one of the few fortunate sides of spending all that time in Kirkwall, and that is, when someone is about to throw a really terrible Blood Magic spell at you, you have some dim idea what to do.

Bethany slammed Haste on to all of them - some of them might be able to get out of the blast radius. Others she could only hope could throw up enough defensive spells or powers to protect themselves. Next she slapped an Unshaken ontop of herself, knowing that she would need it the moment before the spell hit and ripped right through her. She remained standing, though, and through gritted teeth slapped down first a Heal spell. She regretted it was nothing pretty, just a quick burst to heal what they had lost by the initial burst, but it was all she could do. She was no Spirit Healer.

Her fingers went to her temple, as she aimed a Mind Blast at Calanthus. "Fenris, go!"

With little time to react, all Ellana can do is use Bethany's Haste to run into the room since it's too crowded at the door to run back out. Having a clear shot, she then focuses lightning down on the magister to paralyze him. She knows little of blood magic, but assumes he has to consciously control the blood, and if he's paralyzed, maybe he can't.

The Haste spell gives Inessa opportunity to cast a Death Hex on the magister, planning to follow that up with an ice spell but Bethany's warning to Fenris has her on the retreat. She backs away as far as she can--and her blood boils in her veins as the spell takes effect. Though she wants to scream, she can't, only stand their twitching, unable to move.

Garahel, wounded but not stricken, growls and charges. If he can help bring Calanthus down, he absolutely will.

Much like Bethany, Saoirse's time spent in Kirkwall has led to an unfortunate amount of knowledge when it comes to blood magic and how to react to its casting so when it does happen she knows what to do once Haste is cast on the group.

She follows in after Ellana, sliding to halt as her staff slams into the ground and her magic begins to leech outwards. She hopes her Curse of Mortality will be enough in combination with the other magic at work.

"Oh, do shut up." Bethany snapped, as she shifted her footing to send a Deep Freeze at him, just enough to freeze parts of him, sending sharp icicles through the rest, to allow Fenris to finish him off. "The glory of Tevinter is terribly overrated."

With Unshaken still upon her, his Blood Control spell bounced off of her, but that just left someone else vulnerable to attack.

Ellana couldn't have said it better herself. But really, she's going to have to work on some zingers when finishing off enemies like this. It's immensely satisfying and she's just on the team saying it, not coming up with them herself.

The scary thing about all this is that she doesn't know if she has the mental strength to resist a blood control spell. All she can do is try. Thankfully, she doesn't need to, because her staff -- the Scepter of Razikale -- has the Fade Cloak ability built into it, and it activates before the spell has the opportunity to test her resistance. She's invulnerable and takes full advantage of it, letting loose with an Energy Barrage of electricity. Ellana favors fire, and the desire to be vindictive and cast Flashfire is strong, because she wants this magister to feel even more panic and fear in his last moments. But a fire spell would undo the work that Bethany's doing with her ice spell, and she's a team player here.

"Well said!" she calls out to Bethany once her spell has finished and she's back into her regular combat stance.

Well there's one present in the fray who is entirely immune to blood magic and that's to everyone's benefit. Aleron remains entirely cool and collected, even if he does puff up with a touch of pride at his wife's remark.

Of course, he could purge the magic in the room, but that would undo the work of everyone fighting against the monster magister. So he opts instead to disable the man in the most effective way at his disposal. Careful to target only Calanthus and spare everyone else, mage and Fenris alike, Alron reaches out a hand and ignites the lyrium in their opponent's veins.
