OPEN ↠ HEART LIKE ICE

WHO: New Rifters & Inquisition Members
WHAT: A journey south to make new friends and kick some ass
WHEN: Drakonis 15-25
WHERE: Sunless Lands
NOTES: Violence and language assumed. Warn for anyting else. OOC post.

The Sunless Lands are not, in fact, sunless. This time of year there can be as many as eight hours of daylight, some of it blinding where it reflects off of snow and ice that stretches from the southern edge of the Kocari Wilds as far as anyone can see, broken only occasionally by rocky masses of land jutting out of the snow cover or barren tundra peeking out in patches where constant, unforgiving wind has pushed it aside. You'll be traversing this span primarily on foot—there are sleighs, too, pulled by hardy dogs, but they're carrying essential supplies rather than spare people. The only way to get a ride is to successfully feign passing out.

Beyond the dogs, the area isn't devoid of native wildlife: white fennecs hunt rodents underground, and a herd of excessively fluffy wild druffalo is seeking out whatever vegetation it can find. But hunting down a meal or two early and preserving rations for further south would not be a bad idea, because the further south the team travels, the more inhospitable the terrain grows, and the less life can be seen. And sometimes not much of anything can be seen, when clouds roll by and burst with snow thick enough to halt progress entirely for hours.

The nights are cloudy as often as clear, but when they are clear the sky is split by green and purple ribbons of light.

I. THE RESCUE

Two days' journey south, the monotonously icy horizon is broken by something new: smoke rising in interrupted puffs, an intentional signal. Someone is out there. Chances are, it's the rifters, with or without their first group of intended rescuers. But there's no way to be sure. And approaching with caution is wise either way. Rifters have strange powers (and strange personalities), and they've been out here for days now, dealing with demons and Maker knows what else on their own. For all anyone knows, they could be the reason for the rescue team's disappearance. Orders are to approach carefully.

Then, once contact has been made and initial concerns have been allayed, make sure those poor people have something to eat, and try to figure out where their original rescuers disappeared to.

II. THE STORM

After the rifters are recovered, there's still the matter of the red lyrium mine to address. Another two days' journey south will put the group within good range of the mine: not so close as to be seen, but close enough to be able to get there in a couple of hours as needed.

Halfway there, however, in the middle of the day, progress comes to an abrupt half when the darkest clouds yet gather suddenly on the horizon and barrel down on the group, bringing with them a glut of snow that reduces visibility to only a few feet and wind that roars so loudly you have to shout to be heard. Magic can help some with heat, but the storm shows little sign of quickly abating and with hours of deadly cold conditions to deal with, digging in and getting cozy for a few hours might be the most feasible solution for everyone.

III. THE VILLAGE

Shortly before the point everyone is aiming for—one marked by an enormous stone carving of an owl, several times taller than a man, that's inexplicably been left by the ancients in the center of the tundra—something else appears not far to the west. On closer inspection, it turns out to be a circle of low-sitting animal-skin tents pressed down into the snow to protect them from wind, rocky fire pits, and abandoned sleighs. Overall, it's a cross between camp and village indicative of a nomadic group that's staying a while but not forever.

It's empty now, with a coating of snow on most of the structures that indicates it's been at least a few days since anyone was here. Closer inspection reveals personal belongings inside the tents, including toys and clothing belonging to children—and, in many tents, chunks of red lyrium in the center or beneath the skins that form the beds, each piece emanating heat. They probably thought it was safer than fire.

Wherever they went, they don't come back while the Inquisition is there. But the activity does get noticed. A few hours after arrival, enormous white bears apparently moving in a pack come within a hundred yards of the camp and pace at a distance, watching the interlopers with wary interest. Some of them are wearing collars or harnesses decorated in the same style as the tents. For enough food, they may come closer, and they'll turn out to be abnormally tame.

IV. THE BATTLE

The red lyrium mine that Corypheus' followers built when their operations were crippled in Emprise du Lion is nestled in an icy canyon, with massive scaffolding built up the sides of the cliff and too many cages to count, though few of them hold living prisoners anymore. It's a massive operation, but one that's been crippled by its distance from civilization. It's sparsely guarded compared to its size, and other than the cliffs, it has minimal natural protection. The enemy has magic-silencing Templars, enormous behemoths, and a chained white-furred giant, but they are clearly not prepared to be attacked.

Ahead of the onslaught, traps are set and any surviving prisoners are evacuated under cover of darkness. Everyone else sent to fight either creeps down shortly before dawn, rappelling quietly to avoid notice in the dark, or waits at the top for the first surprise strike to provide enough distraction for them to descend more openly. If anyone has been particularly nice to the bears (see above) then it is entirely possible they'll allow themselves to be ridden into battle.

Once their presence is known, their orders are pretty simple. Destroy it all. Leave no one behind and nothing worth returning for.

Fire is a good strategy. Red lyrium doesn't do well in heat.

The existence of a rifter 'qunari' is interesting, if not entirely unknown, but at the moment, her concern is still on the red lyrium. She eases the staff off her back and takes aim.

"We don't. Unless the red lyrium project needs samples for study, we're to destroy all we find. It taints the land, too. So, I recommend standing back unless you want to wear it. I'll explain whatever else you want to know."

Oh, so they destroy it. That's also interesting. He offers her nod and a tight smile and eases back until he's standing behind her. He gives her a little gesture, waving his hand at the hut and inclining his head, "By all means, don't let me stop you then. Please, proceed. I'm interested to see how this works."

Nodding, Korrin focuses on the cluster of red lyrium and unleashes a bolt of lightning from her staff...and another and another, until the cluster is blasted apart. The reddish haze emanating from the red lyrium disappears as well, as the crystalline growth is shattered. Straightening, she sighs.

"One down, who knows how many left to go. There always seem to be more. That shit is far too widespread."

"I'm afraid I'm... new to this world. I don't know much about lyrium - red or otherwise. Are there... other types of lyrium?" Alacruun arches a brow. If it's "red" lyrium, he assumes there have to be other colors. Or maybe it really is just a descriptor.
gatheringstorm: (curious)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-19 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure, the normal kind. Mages like myself use it for a power boost, and Templars use it for their magic-cancelling abilities. The dwarves control that trade, since it's discovered underground and raw lyrium can seriously damage anyone but them. That stuff will mess you up too, if you're not a mage and you take it for decades on end. The older Templars have memory problems, and a whole host of other problems, but they're too addicted to stop." So, toxic to a different degree, just not as immediate and virulent as the red.

And now she has a question of her own. "What were you, before you came here? I've never seen a qunari that was native from some other world, so I don't have reason to think that's changed." Humans and elves are everywhere, but qunari seem destined to be unique to Thedas.

"So, two kinds, both of which eventually do terrible things to you. One is just... quicker about it," Alacruun replies with a shrug. He turns and glances out into the rest of the village. The air in the hut feels strangely close and cloying and he's not sure he enjoys it.

"As for me? I was in a land known as Faerun and we do not have... qunari there. But we do have creatures that look similar; we call them tieflings. So I wasn't a qunari up until a few days ago..."

"A gross oversimplification and red lyrium is still a lot worse. But sure, if it helps process any of this." Korrin has met enough newcomers to realize how overwhelming all of this can be, whether or not it's obvious on the surface.

"Tieflings, huh? Never heard of them. Not a lot of people arrive here with horns, but we've had one or two in the past. I just assumed it's the rift's way of translating whatever doesn't fit into the usual 'human, elf, dwarf' categories. As someone else pointed out, anything too weird would get mistaken for a demon here and probably killed before long."

"I'll settle for the gross oversimplification until I have something more concrete at my fingertips," Alacruun replies with a thin smile, "Or something concrete that won't drive me mad, anyway. I'd rather keep my mind intact throughout my stay in this world, if that's quite alright."

He's silent for a moment, listening to her explanation, expression serious. A part of him wonders if his present form is the closest the magic could get to "dragon" or if it's just random chance. Maybe he could've been an elf or a human just as easily.

Not something he wants to experiment with.

"At home we don't have nearly as many problems with demons - although I think we make up for it by having many other problems."

Like him.

"Of course that's the way of it." Korrin shrugs, unsurprised as she glances around, seeking out that telltale red glow. "Something's always around to fill that role. Before the Breach that created all those rifts, we had plenty of other ways for Thedas to be a fucking mess. This is just the latest in a long line of assholes trying to ruin it for everyone else. At least your anchor is good for stunning demons, though. That's going to come in handy, as you've probably already seen."

"I've found that the world often has its share of problems, regardless of whether or not we'd like it to," Alacruun replies with a shrug. That's part of the reason he was interested in maintaining control over it, at least back home. Still, what happens to other people isn't entirely his concern. But since he's here, he might as well be a bit useful. If it means getting people to help him, he's happy to act in enlightened self interest.

"Do you have a lot of problems with demons, then? They weren't nearly that common at home..."

At least, not in the material plane.

"You saw them emerge from the rift you exited, right? That's the way it is with every rift in Thedas; they suck demons out, and those demons are a threat to everything around them. The Inquisition has been sealing rifts for the past three years, but there are still more we keep discovering, everywhere in the South. And that's not even covering the threat demons are when they don't manifest on this side of the Veil." Korrin narrowing her eyes as she spots another cluster, though a smaller one. Lifting her staff again, she fires off another volley of lightning bolts.

"Well, we're not demons and we've arrived here - those of us who have come through the rifts, that is. In fact, I'd surmise we're from entirely different worlds... somehow. But magic is a very tricky thing-" He pauses to let her blast some more lyrium with lighting bolts. He watches with a certain degree of interest, trying to remember her stance, any words she uses, the gestures. It's different from the spellcasting he's used to.

"Where do these demons come from? What are they?"

"A demon is a spirit from the Fade that embodies a negative trait. There are demons of pride, rage, despair, fear...and so on. They feed on the darker parts of who we are, either creating ripe conditions for it or taking advantage of what's already there. How strong and cunning they are depends on the complexity of the emotions or ideas they embody; a pride demon is way more powerful than a rage demon, for instance.

There's also a belief that some demons -if not all- are warped mirrors of spirits, denied their original purpose. Given that there are spirits of Compassion, Hope, Valor and so on, it's not the worst idea." She shrugs, not pretending to be an expert, though as a mage she tends to know more than the average person anyway.

"So not from, say, the Nine Hells. Interesting," Alacruun muses as he trails her out into the village. They should look for more of that lyrium. Probably destroy it, too, if she's right about all of those negative affects. He's very interested in learning, though, so he sticks close to her trying to take mental notes on everything she says.

"Can one talk to them? Or are they mostly interested in just destroying whatever they come across? Demons or spirits, I'm not particularly picky. It'd be good to know, just in case..."
gatheringstorm: (crossed arms)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-23 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't seem to mind that company, as long as it doesn't impede her search for the toxic substance. "The demons that are by rifts...it's not likely. They're unrelentingly hostile, possibly because some were spirits and driven mad when they were dragged over into the physical world. I've never seen them be interested in anything but attacking people.

Demons exist beyond proximity to the rifts; most of them are in the Fade, but in places where the Veil is thin, they can sometimes find ways to cross over. That said, they're all full of shit and anything they say is to either corrupt or possess you. I wouldn't trust anything they say, for any reason."

[personal profile] coiledscales 2018-03-24 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose I'll have to judge for myself if I ever run into any of them who aren't going to attack on sight," Alacruun shrugs, making a low, soft noise of contemplation just under his breath. It's a new world with new rules. He's going to take every perspective he can. Even the unorthodox ones. Especially the unorthodox ones. He pauses and then nods toward another corner of the village.

"There's more of that... lyrium. Hold on a moment-"

He raises his hands and speaks an incantation and gestures, ending with a pair of fingers pointed at his target. There's a crackle and a jagged crack of lightning leaps from his fingers and across the open space.

Korrin watches with interest, always curious about rifters and how they use their own magic. Some of it's rather different but emergence of lightning makes her smile. That she can always understand, whatever it takes to conjure it.

"A mage, too, huh? That will make you a beacon to demons, when you're dreaming, but we can always use another mage around here. Some assholes would deny it, but they don't know what they're talking about."
coiledscales: (Default)

[personal profile] coiledscales 2018-03-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I prefer the term wizard, honestly, but mage works perfectly well," Alacruun laughs. He shakes his hands, as if freeing them of dust or water and then folds them back under his cloak. Brrr.

"Although I've never attracted demons before now. Is that something to do with how magic works in this world? Why is that? I don't think I've heard a concrete explanation of much of anything since I arrived."
gatheringstorm: (mod 12)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-25 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, that's a long explanation, but I'll try to condense it as much as possible. Magic originates from the Fade, the realm where spirits and demons dwell and where everyone but dwarves visit when they dream. Non-mages don't remember much if anything, but mages are lucid the entire time. Mages are defined by their ability to channel energy from the Fade, and that brings a lot of benefits, but also some downsides.

The act of drawing power from the Fade also draws attention from from the other side of the Veil. Demons can possess other beings, but a mage is like a fucking buffet to them, and they'll always choose us over other targets. That's why mages train to be vigilant, because we're always the preferred sources when it comes to possession. It's for that reason that a mage really has to hone their willpower; it's key to surviving in a world where demonic temptation targets them."

[personal profile] coiledscales 2018-03-26 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very different from what I'm used to," Alacruun replies with a smile that's almost cheerful. He seems to be considering her words, turning them over and over in his head as he tries to think of how to translate all of this into something worthwhile for himself. How to make this new system work - and perhaps how to break it, if given the chance.

"Where I'm from, magic is simply part and parcel of the world - woven into its very fabric - and manipulating it doesn't necessarily involve tapping into some parallel world or plane. It's... an interesting difference. I'll have to look into it when I have more time."
gatheringstorm: (side-eye)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-27 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That smile provokes a raised eyebrow from Korrin; most of the responses she gets to explaining about mages and demons range from unnerved to outright horrified, not...that. He's so new that it probably hasn't sunk in for him, but still. She doesn't quite know what to make of that.

"Plenty of mages around are eager to compare magic from across worlds, so there's that. But I wouldn't expect anything from demons themselves but more bullshit and possession attempts. Absolutely everything they say and do is geared towards that, but knowing it helps avoid those pitfalls."

"Possession - taking over a mage's body? Or anyone's? Is that common here? How wary should I be when I encounter one of these creatures? Can they take my body by force or do I have to allow them entrance?"

He's a bit concerned by the idea, but he wants an idea of the limits to it and how he ought to approach this world and its threats.
gatheringstorm: (mod 1)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
"A mage's, though they'll take a corpse sometimes. That's why Andrastians tend to burn their dead instead of bury them." A practice with which she heartily agrees, for all the faults she finds in the Chantry. "Usually, you have to agree to it...but the more powerful ones are pretty smart, and not to be underestimated. If they can trick or blackmail you into it, then they will. And the most powerful ones...well, I wouldn't completely rule out forceful possession, either. It's just best to stay on your toes around them."
coiledscales: (Default)

[personal profile] coiledscales 2018-03-28 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Corpse-burning has a certain commonality, I see. Some cultures practice it where I'm from as well, although it's not typically to prevent possession by... demons," Alacruun pauses. He doesn't mention that part of it is because of undead, but whatever. That's not that relevant here, right? Right. What they don't know won't hurt them.

Until he wants it to.

"I've dealt with... well. Not demons in that sense, but those with silver tongues. I'll be on my guard. Thank you for the warning, all the same..."
gatheringstorm: (watchful)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2018-03-28 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're welcome. It's only fair to warn you about how fucked up Thedas can be when you were forced here, after all. Sometime when you're less overwhelmed, you can tell me about the pitfalls of your own world." Korrin doesn't know if such information will ever become relevant, but why not learn?
