Prompts are in comments so I only get notifs once.
His voice is familiar too. It's been a smorgasbord of delightful accents since she arrived. She's pretty sure if she spots an Antivan in person that she'll jump their bones as soon as they say hello, and Ignis's accent is all refinement without sounding snooty.
"Hey, Ignis! See, I remembered!" Of course then she takes a good look at him and realizes that he's blind. Why did she have to use the word "see?" Her face grows hot as she winces, but thankfully she's spared him seeing that.
"Um, yeah. Your friend? That'd be great. Any help I can get, really. I'm sorta new to the whole weapons thing, but I don't want to lose what I've learned so far, you know?"
If he had, he would have made a comment about how she'd be surprised how much the colloquial relies on sight, but as it is she's spared the grammar lesson by asking being interested in learning.
"I can certainly relate. I've been training to regain some of what I lost myself." He doesn't wish to dwell on that though. "My friend is named Prompto. Have you had the pleasure of making his acquaintance?"
Whoa, a blind fighter? That is badass. If Tessa was blind, the first thing she'd do is trip over a chair and break her neck. The thought of fighting while blind? It doesn't even seem like a possibility should it happen to her.
"Prompto? No. I'd remember a name like that. What kind of gun was he used to?"
He's trying, anyway. Eventually he'll have his abilities back.
"A variety. He favored handguns and pistols, but he could use heavier machinery. He has one of them here, Lionheart. It came through one of the Rifts. It lacks ammunition, I'm afraid."
"Dude, he named his gun? I should have thought to do that." Missed opportunity right there! "Well, doesn't matter. I ran out of ammo and used it to beat a bunch of demons to death until it broke apart." As you do.
She lifts the crossbow in her hand and gives it a thoughtful look. "Though I've got this one-handed crossbow here. Maybe I could name it? If I ever get used to aiming it."
"Huh. I can see how I'd be less likely to give up on practicing if it had a name." Tessa's never really been one to name her cars or electronics, so this is new to her. And she's a bit lost on what to call it.
"I might need a little help. If it's up to me, I'll probably be dumb and name it after one of the Steelers." Wait. "That's a sports team where I'm from."
"A team? What sort of sport do they play?" It had been such a long time since Ignis had even considered something like sports. It was surprisingly normal to discuss.
"Football." Except knowing him and that accent... "American football, where the foot's only involved on two occasions. The rest of the time, you carry the ball. I know, it's dumb, but it's what we call it."
Tessa can't help but enjoy the bit of normal talk too. Every time she thinks back to people from home, she realizes there's a 99% chance they're dead. So the Steelers? Dead. Except maybe the running backs and wide receivers. They could escape a zombie hoard. But her family? Dead. Friends? Probably all dead. Chris Evans? If only being a hot as hell actor could spare you from being a zombie meal.
"I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar, but it isn't too unusual that different worlds would have different cultures. Perhaps you can teach some of the natives here about the game and see if they'd like to play?" He thinks having something normal is underrated in times like these.
"I'd like to learn the rules myself, though I'm not sure how useful I'd be in a match."
That suggestion has Tessa's eyes light up in a way they haven't since she landed here. Holy crap, that is an amazing idea. She could teach everyone the rules and invent the Thedas Football League and they could form teams and-- yep. Yep this is a thing that will be happening.
"Dude! That is the greatest idea ever! I'm totally gonna do that! How are the people here when it comes to sports? Do you think they'd be down for it? Man, I think I'd have to reduce the size of the field, though. Without modern tech like cameras and slow mo, there'd be no way to referee a 100 yard field." Already the wheels are turning in her brain. "And I'll totally explain all the rules. You wanna sit somewhere? I should probably cool it with the crossbow for the moment."
Ignis is pleased with the passion in her voice, he nods, agreeing to take a break. "I believe there are benches in this direction?" he suggests, waving a hand in the direction of an area they can sit and talk.
He had memorized the layout earlier now and works hard to keep himself oriented so he knows where he is.
"Yeah." Tessa is impressed that he has a sense of direction. She sure wouldn't. But now she comes to walk alongside him, carrying her crossbow with her because she licked it, it's hers now.
"So, okay. Football. There are two teams fighting over a ball. One's on offense, and they have to get the ball all the way across the field past the defense to score points. When they do, it's called a touchdown."
When he walks he still uses a cane, but at least he knows the general layout of the places he visits often. As they move, he listens to her and taps the ground with the cane.
"Simple to follow so far. I imagine there are more complicated rules about the manner the ball can be moved down the field?"
"Yeah. You get four attempts to make it ten yards, but if it looks like you're not gonna make it on the fourth, you kick the ball away for the other team to catch and run down the field as far as they can, and where they get stopped is where their turn on offense starts. Here we are." She doesn't know if that's necessary to say as they get to the benches, but she decides to be helpful anyway as she takes a seat, still ready to divulge more amazing football facts.
"So there's a quarterback. He gets given the ball and can either throw it down field to a team mate, or pass it off to one who runs through the defense's line. And the goal for the defense is to tackle the guy with the ball to keep them from moving down field and scoring. Still with me?"
He is grateful when she gives him verbal clues. He lets out an 'ah' and gives her a grateful smile as he feels his way to the bench. He sits and listens to her.
"The quarterback sounds as if he is a vital member of the team."
"Oh, he totally is. It's also why he's usually the biggest target, so his team has to protect him. Anyway, let's say you get a touchdown. That's worth six points, but then you get to kick a field goal to try and get an extra point. And there are four quarters. At the end, whoever has the most points wins. There's a lot of rules about how you're allowed to tackle someone and special circumstances where you can get two or three points, but those are the basics."
Tessa wouldn't call herself an expert, even though she watches every year. She tends to forget some of the rules until the season starts anew and she remembers them. But that isn't something she'll get to enjoy watching anymore, even if she did end up home.
"Unfortunately, my world has been at war for generations. I'm afraid that doesn't lend itself to many forms of entertainment. Most of our feats of strength come down to training for the battlefield. The Kingsglaive were especially highly regarded."
"Oh, that sucks. I'm sorry. But, uh, the Kingsglaive sounds cool? Like it's a really fancy name." Tessa is well aware she sounds lame, but she's doing her best to steer the conversation away from depressing home world stuff.
"That's right. The crown's most elite bodyguards. They even have a bit of the royal family's magic." Ignis doesn't seem too depressed to talk about his home. If anything he seems calm and comfortable.
"Magic. Right." They've discussed this before briefly over the crystals. Tessa still can't say she's comfortable around the whole magic thing, but so many around the base are that she doesn't want to be that loser kid on the playground that everyone shuns because their mom won't let them play past 5pm. In other words, she needs to play it cool.
"So how's that work? Like, how do they get that bit of magic?"
"It is said The Crystal was a gift from the gods," he explained after a moment. "We touched on that before, I believe. The royal family has a connection to the Crystal, and those loyal to them can gain access to that power."
"Oh, wow. That sounds like something out of a story. Like, the crystal knows who's loyal to them and everything? That's really cool." Tessa tilts her head in thought. "Do you have fancy ceremonies n' at? Seems like with kings and magic you'd have cool ceremonies."
