"--Pardon?" she squawks in the same instant the heel of the staff begins its clunk, clunk, clunking on the stone floor.
'And a one, and a two, and a three--'

No secret enjoyment lurks under the surface. It isn’t not bullshit just because he doesn’t suck at it.
Meanwhile.
“If that was innuendo,” he repeats, enunciating in a way that only makes his accent heavier, “then sure. Or should I rephrase?”

Do not think about stripping anything from anywhere.
Wysteria croaks indignantly. She can feel the back of her neck growing very warm and swears it will not - absolutely is disallowed - from spreading to her face. "No!" Which is not a yelp, though she does lower her volume to the level of appalled hiss afterward. "No, that's quite all right." And then for good measure, in place of stomping on his foot because she is a good-natured and agreeable sort of person who wouldn't hurt a fly, and most definitely didn't finally escape her second cousin's new relation by accidentally kneeing him somewhere delicate: "I would prefer that you didn't."

That he tugs her in closer is, genuinely, due to the fact that another overly-foot-focused couple orbits close enough to threaten collision.

"The second one. And I would encourage you not to make such a-- such an overture again."

The counting continues. One of the Orlesians demonstrates a skip step, and Kostos manages to do it while looking like he would rather fall on a sword, and then he says, "What was your name, again?"
(He remembers her name.)

"You must be the younger one. Of the pair. Am I right?"
no subject
It isn’t the commentary—accusation—about their birth order. Not entirely. A month ago that would have been irritating the way everything else is irritating and no more. But since then they’ve nearly killed one another in the garden, and all of that, and they aren’t a pair. Kostos hardly knows him. Now he doesn’t want to.
None of that is Miss Poppell’s business.
And he doesn’t make a scene. He swerves back in time to smile, in a tightlipped and humorless way. He’s never been good at not drawing people a helpful road map to his buttons. For example:
“Why? Because he’s taller?” By the worst two inches in all of Thedas. But he does look a little more pleased about the second option. “Or is it the degeneracy?”
no subject
Well.
She smiles in return. "Is he taller? I don't know that I've ever seen you both stand next to one another to compare."
