A miscalculation (semi-closed)
WHO: Julius, Miles, later Sawbones, optional others
WHAT: Julius finally gets something he's been working on right at arguably the worst possible moment
WHEN: Sometime this month
WHERE: Gallows training grounds, then the infirmary
NOTES: While the thread with Julius/Miles/Sawbones is closed, all of this happens in public areas, so commentary/heckling/scandalized gasping in side threads is fine if desired. Description of injury possible within, though nothing too gnarly.

It started as a simple discussion about theory.
Julius had been talking to Miles a bit about how mages had shaped and influenced martial strategy in Southern Thedas, and had mentioned that the vast majority of the time, a mage who has gotten into true hand to hand combat is already having a worst time than he intended. Of course, this led to a digression about exceptions, and also what sort of hand-to-hand training Circle mages had or lacked.
Which then led to a discussion of how Julius himself had been working through some leftover notes about a certain style of magic popular in Kirkwall, specifically, and about how it could be used to help overpower a nonmagical opponent while fighting this way, though that would be an adaptation of its initial design. And then, of course, they reached a point where they mutually decided it would be easier to demonstrate what he meant than simply push forward on paper.
All of which seemed very reasonable at the time. They were using staves, after all - nothing with a sharp edge, nothing they would be moving through at any speed. It shouldn't have been unsafe.
Only Julius's attempt to focus telekinetic force on the staff itself, meant to push Miles back a few feet, is rather more successful than Julius intends it to be. He slams the slight rifter into the ground (several feet away, so part of it was what he intended to do).
Rushing over, he's already preparing a basic healing spell before he can even ask if Miles is hurt.

CLAPS HANDS!!!
He doesn't even really have time to react or to try and correct his fall. His feet just abruptly take leave of the ground, his eyes go wide in shock and confusion, and the staff flies from his hands as he flies very hard, down and in the opposite direction. It's probably a good thing he lands on his back and not, say, one of his arms, but there is a distinct whoosh as the wind is knocked clean out of him.
He sits up with a wheeze, looking slightly wall-eyed for a moment, and then immediately he cringes and his hand goes to his side, his mouth stretched in a pained grimace. In a thin, reedy voice he says, a little plaintively, "Were you aiming for my ribs?"

Almost absently, as he casts the spell, "I was trying to push you backward, not far, out of staff reach. I hadn't been able to get it to work, but when I made the adjustment I seem to have overcompensated." He looks up from his work to Miles' face. "...apologies."
He sits back on his heels. "I'm no spirit healer, so I can't... Does it feel like you broke anything?" He's hoping not his spine, at least.
time? sounds fake
"Oh, no. If I'd broken anything, you'd know it. Think I might have bruised a few ribs on the way down." He sounds winded and a little in pain, but Miles being injured is apparently so routine an occurrence that there seems to be very little to get excited over when something isn't actually broken. Then, despite himself, he starts laughing, in little wheezing fits and starts because ow, it hurts to laugh. "You know, usually I'm the one accused of overcompensating."
Definitely fake
"For what it's worth, that isn't meant to be an attack spell, though evidently I could use it that way. It's mainly meant to get opponents out of melee range long enough for you to cast something more complex at them without them hacking your arm off. Or your leg, as I came close to learning the hard way at Ghislain."
but my love for this CR is very real
"Well, you succeeded with flying colors on that part. Definitely did not make leg-hacking distance there." He grins, because it really is funny. "D'you think you can do it again? I mean, do you know how to, or was that just a freak occurrence?"
