Is that how that goes? He looks skeptical, but it doesn’t stop him from approaching at a slow and lazy gait.

“I suppose so. How long have at it?”

[windyvoice]

"Liiiike on and off for an hour, I guess?" She pushes herself up onto her elbows, blowing some hair off her face, "I keep getting like drained or whatever it is that happens when you use magic a lot."

[highborn]

“That’s the word for it, from my understanding.”

He stops before her and sinks to a crouch, elbows on his knees.

“And what’s the goal here?”

[windyvoice]

"Having some kind of control, I guess. Or like any control."

[highborn]

He nods vaguely, still studying her with that mild interest.

“Well, if you haven’t got it yet, it seems unlikely you will today. You’re only wasting energy at this point.”

[windyvoice]

She flops back down on the ground. No point worry about dirt at this point.

"Isn't that like the opposite of what you're supposed to say?"

[highborn]

He snorts.

“Maybe if you were speaking to a teacher. That’s not quite my area.”

[windyvoice]

"So you're not here to offer me valuable insight on how to unlock my inner control?" She manages to look deeply affronted from where she's lying.

“Absolutely not,” he says, and lifts back to his feet as he offers a hand out. “But I might offer you a hand up if you’re looking.”

[windyvoice]

"That works too," she says, grabbing the offered hand and letting him help pull her up. She's a little woozy on her feet, but she's still got the springy teenage thing going for her. "Thanks."

He nods, stepping back once she has her footing again.

“Jenny Lou, wasn’t it? A rifter.”

Obviously. He may still be new here, but she practically screams it from the rooftops.

[windyvoice]

"Yeah, that's me." She grins, all friendly, "I tried to get you to help me with the firepit, yeah? Totally forgot your name, sorry about that."

[highborn]

“Right.”

He says it a little tersely at the memory, but really, who is he to judge? He was a drunkenly excitable youth once too.

“Vanadi. You’ve really no shortage of schemes, have you?”

[windyvoice]

That grins just widens. "Gotta keep things exciting somehow, right? And anyway, this isn't a scheme! It's like personal growth!"

[highborn]

With a brow cocked, he asks, "And that's the direction you'd like to grow?"

[windyvoice]

"Maybe not that direction exactly, unless I'm planning on getting knocked on my ass a lot. Just... Ya know. The being okay at magic thing."

[highborn]

He sighs, watching her with an aggrieved look. This isn't his business, really. She certainly isn't his charge, and what's it to him if she manages some destruction of property?

But, unfortunately, he isn't interested in seeing anyone hurt by untested, untrained magic. He runs a hand through his hair, already resigned to it.

"Alright." He gestures with a nod that she accompany to him as he starts for the nearest bench. "Give me the rundown, then. Where does your ability come from, and how do you summon it?"
