The kitchens have been missing a number of items and put out signs begging for their return. Someone might witness him looking both ways and casually tearing down these signs while whistling. Perhaps, you received a kitchen item they're asking for as a gift. Maybe you just put two and two together that Edgard stole stuff for his gifts.

[keenly]

A hand slams against one of the signs just as Edgard moves to tear it down, and in the seconds that follow, Edgard might reflect on whether or not he has actually seen Colin angry before. Perhaps previously, he had merely seen him indignant, impatient, or just in the moments leading up to anger. Perhaps he'd assumed that's what anger looks like on Colin because Colin is sweet by nature, and rarely angry, so it's anyone's guess what it looks like on him.

Well, this is what it looks like--simmering blankness staring up at Edgard from beneath black eyebrows, a clenched jaw and flushed face with little else in terms of change.

"Is this a joke to you?" comes the seething hiss.

Edgard flinches as the hand slams. He turns to see Colin, of all people, so incensed that he senses he might actually be in trouble here. Edgard takes his hand away from the sign and tries to think fast.

"I-" He stutters. Great start. He then puts on a huge smile. "How are you, Maman?"

[keenly]

He might as well have said nothing. Colin doesn't even blink.

"Some servant or other here is going to take the fall for what you've done and you're fine with that."

[muckspout]

Well, the jig is clearly up. Edgard's stomach drops at Colin's words.

"N-no. That's not what I--"

Edgard gapes like a fish and looks around wildly as if looking for escape. (Abort, Abort!)

[keenly]

"Then what are you doing?" Eyebrows up, waiting for him to say the right thing.

[muckspout]

Edgard has a lie ready, he planned it, he was going to say that the signs seemed old and he was helping to remove them. He did not anticipate Colin being the one to catch him or being quite this infuriated. He looks around desperately and then settles on the truth.

"Did not expect the signs. Thought no one would notice." He steps a little bit away and shrugs. "Was trying to get rid of them."

[keenly]

These are the least impressed eyebrows on the planet. "And what are you going to do now?"

Edgard pauses for a very long time.

"Not get rid of them?"

[keenly]

"You're going to make this right."

[muckspout]

Edgard leans against the wall, turning his head up so it clunks a little.

"By doing what?" He doesn't see a lot of solutions here.

[keenly]

"What did you do with the stuff you stole?"

[muckspout]

Edgard tosses his hands in the air. Yes, the whole problem!

"What do you think I did with them?"

To him, this answer is obvious. To anyone else, probably less so.

[keenly]

"I meant who did you sell them to?" That's the most obvious conclusion.

[muckspout]

Edgard scoffs as if offended.

"I didn't sell them! They were gifts! And just a couple of things."

He puts his thumb and forefinger together. It was barely anything, Colin!

[keenly]

There's a horrified pause. When he speaks again, it's louder.

"You stole things and gave them to your friends? Who can be found with them?"

[muckspout]

Edgard stands very still, dumbfounded. This hadn't occurred to him.

"I wasn't trying to--putain. It was a couple of things!"

It was never this complicated before. Was it? For the first time, Edgard is considering servants who lived on the estates he helped plunder. He shakes that away before it overtakes him.

[keenly]

"A couple of things that are clearly missed," Colin says as he gestures to the poster. "Get them back. Put them back where they belong. You can suffer through not having gifts to give your friends for one year."

[muckspout]

Edgard makes the saddest face. Why me? Woe is Edgard.

"Do I have to? Maybe everyone will just forget about this." And then after a moment, "What about food?"

[keenly]

"Start with what's on that list," Colin says firmly. "Prepared food, they won't want back. Spices, yes. Anything else that's not food, yes. You have to. It won't just go away. Someone will take the blame."

[muckspout]

Edgard looks at the list and then back at Colin. With anyone else, he would fight a little harder, but instead he lets out a sigh like he's been wounded.

"Alright. I will try."

[muckspout]

A significant period of time later, Edgard stumbles into the Apothecary looking extremely worse for wear. He is clearly having trouble breathing and he holds on to the various shelves to make his way over to Colin. Once there, he hands him two spoons and a drinking glass.

"T-that's all I was able to get." He takes a deep heaving breath in which catches and then falls to the floor.

Colin quickly sets aside the dishes to try to bolster Edgard, and in lieu of that, he tries pulling him up.

"Come on. Let's get you to the infirmary. What happened?"

[muckspout]

Edgard braces one foot and allows himself to be pulled up. He squints blearily at Colin.

"I told you what happened. I went to get the items like you told me and these were the only ones I got."

Edgard puts the arm not being held by Colin to his chest, breathing in deeply.

[keenly]

"I meant what happened to you," Colin says gently as they stagger together toward the infirmary across the hall.
