Also a few steps behind, and to the side, stands Teren with daggers in both hands, her gaze pinioned to the strange and horrible sight before them; to Adrasteia, the only one among their number who can do what she's doing, and see how she does it so readily.

Teren says nothing, only waits, knees bent and prepared to spring into action should anything emerge from the rift.

"I know," she says to the sound of her name, Ellis' voice. It fucking hurts, what she's trying to do. But it's not the first thing to hurt her in her lifetime, and it won't be the last, so Adrasteia sticks with it for another handful of seconds, until...

Well, firstly: this is not what she'd hoped would happen. She knows the little implosion that occurs when a Rift is closed by someone with a shard, she's seen it happen before. This is not that. This is like caustic soup boiling over, not the cleansing finality of a closed round of lightning, and she can tell.

But she has to keep trying.

Right up until the point some of that caustic soup decides (or appears to decide) to reach out along the connection of green energy traveling from Adrasteia's left palm.

Severing the connection is not immediate. She has to confirm for herself that's what she's actually seeing, and is holding her breath, but then her fist closes sharply and the energy exchange abruptly ends. The viscousness remains extended for a few heartbeats and then returns to the surface of the rift.

She could cry in frustration but fear at what she's just experienced? Kind of overrides that impulse.

No, this is not how it's meant to go. Ellis has spent years watching Wysteria and Tony and an assortment of Rifters close these tears. He knows what it looks like when it goes as its meant to, and he knows that this is not it.

And he knows that he never wants to discover what would happen if that gelatinous, bubbling matter made connection with Adrasteia. Or any member of Riftwatch, really. If she hadn't closed her fist, Ellis might have done it for her. He's never tried to break a connection between shard and rift before, but there's a first time for everything.

The impulse had carried him forward a few steps, and he's near enough now to put a palm at the center of her back.

"Let me see," is very low. Her hand is surely unharmed, but.
