Having been removed from her father for a couple years now, it's easier not to get upset when people talk about him like he's just some asshole. It's easier to agree with them, sometimes.
no subject
Though his disapproval is clear, Barrow's intent to trash her father pretty much stops there.
"S'pose you already missed out on the son part, anyway."
no subject
"Yeah." Clarisse curls her fist around her whiskey glass. "And don't you know that the only thing worse than a weak son is a daughter?"
no subject
It sounds like the sort of shit one hears, but Barrow doesn't know that he's ever actually born witness to a victim of it. His eyebrows arch, intrigued.
no subject
Clarisse sees the look he's giving her, eyebrows raised, and frowns back at him. "Don't look like that."
no subject
“Look like what!”
no subject
And here Clarisse does an impression of the face Barrow was making, eyebrows arched. Of course she puts way too much emphasis on the intrigue, making it look more like she's mocking him, but she can't maintain the expression for long before she laughs too, despite herself.
"Whatever."
no subject
“I don’t look like that!” he insists, but one gets the impression he doesn’t care that much either way— he’s just enjoying the exchange.
“All right, you little shit,” he adds fondly, “go on.”
no subject
Go on. Okay.
"Uh, so where I'm from, if you're a demigod, they take you to this special training camp. A lot of the time your godly parent claims you once you get there, but not always. The gods are busy and they have a ton of kids. Sometimes they forget about us. But if your godly parent does claim you, sometimes they might give you quests, or challenges. Or they might never speak to you ever. It's up to them." It's a crapshoot, basically!
no subject
"...that sounds bad." Like bad bad. "...you get to choose whether you go or not?"
no subject
no subject
“Well that’s not fair,” he remarks, quietly— she seems very cavalier about it all, so he doesn’t want to step on toes, and yet.
no subject
A pause as she takes another drink, makes another face. Her tongue feels mostly numb at this point, though, which is nice. "Anyway, I liked living there. I could do what I wanted and I got to train to be a warrior and kill monsters and win feats of strength and shit."
no subject
"Sounds like you made the best of it, at least."
no subject
That's why it's so annoying that most of Riftwatch is suspicious of her right now, all that hard work for nothing. She knows it's not just her—that'd be enough to make her seriously believe she'd lost her mind—but it's still a thought that stings every time it resurfaces. Which is often.
no subject
"People don't see that, always. They'll take it for granted your whole life, but." He shrugs idly. "'Long as you're doing it for yourself. Still shit to be forgotten, but at least you did something you're proud of."
no subject
Clarisse sighs, but it's less aggravated now. She gives Barrow a sidelong look. "What about you, old man? You proud of yourself?"
Too familiar, considering he doesn't know her anymore? Nah, he can deal with it.
no subject
no subject
"What are you the most proud of?"
no subject
"...the training yard," he decides, after some consideration, "keeping it nice, clean. Welcome. ...safe, I guess."
no subject
Assuming she's not away or being followed by someone who thinks she's a spy.
no subject
"Really?"
no subject
no subject
"Well," he says, clearing his throat, "we're keeping you."
no subject
"Good, because I'm planning on sticking around."
