While Vivienne still holds private reservations about the rifters, their behaviors, and yes sometimes their choice in atrocious fashion, she never voices them. Well, never out in the open and not to someone whose ear she doesn't trust to stay disassociated from their lips. However, her reservations about Martel are not nearly so intense as they were when first they met. In fact, she's come to enjoy his company, the occasional quiet evening of drinks talking for hours.

It's for this reason that she's so looking forward to the holiday. Being generous is certainly a way of buying favor and influence, but in some cases it's just plain delightful to be generous for the joy it will bring the recipient. Thus she waits with anticipation for her messenger to have him brought up to visit, outside of the evening drinks hour.

The invitation had come as something of a surprise, but not an unpleasant or unwelcome one; he's grown used to her company, appreciative of her edges as well as the increasing ease of their conversations. She's a fascinating woman that in another life he might have harbored more than just intellectual appreciation of - in this one he suspects that would be rather punching above his weight.

And he isn't stupid enough to think that there's no clever game or political motive in the company they do keep; they are both too skilled at the games they play for anything to be exclusively free of it. But for all that,

Wintersend. He'll get the hang of all of these celebrations and dates in time, but he had been obliged to figure out something very quickly when he'd been interrupted by her messenger. The notion of giving her a replica of the most powerful gem in creation had been too much to pass up-- and Adelaide, and Sabine, the only three women (or people, generally) he has any intention of gifting anything.

It's a pretty thing, and the Bhelliom never meant much to him, but with Vivienne, it does amuse. A little.
