Minas? Minas Gerais?

A state in southern Brazil? Known for farms and mines and being boring as hell.

[rathercommon]

Oh - yeah. I've heard of Brazil. I didn't know they had mines, there, though. I thought it was - all - foresty. And that there weren't many people there.

[pyrazine]

That's the north.

The south is full of mines.

[She looks at Kitty for a long moment.]

Wait, so you're from Earth?

[rathercommon]

[ Kitty nods. And realizes that she probably should have been surprised, too, that this girl was from Earth, but - she supposes she's just sort of expected that Rifters would be from Earth. Even though that's not actually true. ]

London. England. [ As if she wouldn't have heard of London. Everyone has. ]

[pyrazine]

Ravens.

[She says it out of a memorization training. London is ghosts, and ravens.]

Is this London?

[rathercommon]

Ravens?

[ Puzzled - ]

What do you mean, ravens? I mean - we've got them, yeah.

[pyrazine]

Uh.

At the tower thing.

[The Tower of London, she means, of course she does.]

[rathercommon]

[ Kitty tenses slightly. ]

You mean the Tower? [ A small, taut nod. ] Yes. There are ravens there.

[pyrazine]

That's what I know about London.

I'm from a favela. I've never been outside of Brazil.

[She barely left Rio until they dragged her to the middle of fucking nowhere. But more interesting, there's fear here.]

Why don't you like the tower?

[rathercommon]

[ Yeah. Right. That's...That makes sense. If she's from thousands of miles away, from some land that never ended up a colony, she wouldn't know that much. Which is pretty bloody enviable, isn't it. ]

It's - where they take people who've been arrested. If you end up within its walls, you're usually never seen again. And if you are seen...

[ She shakes her head. Sometimes, you're seen because your body ends up gibbeted. Or, sometimes, on rare occasions, because you were let go. But even then you're not the same. ]

Don't ever go to London.

[pyrazine]

Didn't plan to. They probably won't even let me go.

Well.

Not like they probably wanted me here, either.

[She's not really thinking that Kitty probably doesn't know who they are.]

[rathercommon]

[ She pulls herself from her brooding enough to ask: ]

They?

[pyrazine]

I'm sort of in training to be a police officer.

Sort of.

[A supernatural one.]

[rathercommon]

And...your fellow police officers won't let you travel?

[pyrazine]

I don't have any time off yet.

[She says it as if she'll get time off one day. As far as she knows Lara showed up in Ouro Fino in 1939 and hasn't had a day off since.]

[rathercommon]

[ Well, that's a - weird bloody answer.

Kitty shifts uncomfortably. Still, she pitches her voice casual as she asks - ]

Why d'you want to become a police officer, anyway?

[pyrazine]

[She considers this. They're not here. She doesn't have to lie. The urge is still strong to say the canned answer - she likes Aluisio, for all that he's a fucking stuffed shirt who doesn't know how to have fun or take a joke - but she doesn't have to.

She considers this more.]

I didn't really want it. It's kind of a family business.

[That's the politic almost-canned answer.]

[rathercommon]

[ How completely unsatisfying. ]

Always do what your family tell you to, then?

[pyrazine]

[She lifts her head a little. Okay. Here we go.]

What, no loyalty?

[rathercommon]

[ A shrug. ]

Well, they told me to be a secretary, and I'm nothing of the sort. So. I don't think their expectations are enough to make me do something.

[pyrazine]

Well, I have the talent for it.

[rathercommon]

Still haven't said that you wanted to.

[pyrazine]

[There's a shrug there, easy and unbothered. Does she want to? Probably not. Is she going to? Yes.]

[ She frowns just a bit deeper. ]
